There are a LOT of things changing in F1 over the next few years, and here's why I think that Aston Martin can Win a Formula 1 World Championship.
Before we get into the data and explain just how much better the AMR23 is than its predecessor and even how it's better than the Mercedes W14, we'll look at the team's past before we look into the future.

Always had a soft spot for Force India, the team that ran on shoestrings with silly looking 1 stop strategies that nearly always came up making everyone else think 'why didn't we try that?' Grateful Papa Stroll is determined to see this through.
I respect it. Saved the team from Vijay
That's where checo learned his tire whispering aswell. Even in redbull there are multiple races where max pitted twice while checo only did one to pressure the other teams.
â@@Durabo iirc he mainly learned it from Kobayashi back in his sauber days. He perfected it under Force India
@@brrrake Hey, Vijay got more done with less. Maybe more owners/principals need to be as bombastic as Vijay and Lawrence.
â@@freakysquirrel7218 think you need to go find a reality nut there Mr Squirrel ! The only reason Kamui ever got into F1 was Toyota wanting at least a đŻđ”driver as their testing driver and only got to drive at all there cause Timo Glock got sick the first drive then hurt his leg for Kobayashi's second drive in Toyota that kept aglock from racing in two races. He did score points at Sauber when he wasn't driving like a kamikaze though. But please dont give him credit for Checo's skill of preserving his tires durung a race ever. Thats always been Perez's strong suit as a driver !! If he learned it from anyone it was Jensen Button while at hus short stay as his teammate with McLaren ! Cause everyone knows Button is a master at saving his tires with his smooth approach and soft throttle response exiting corners driving style !!
most criminally underrated F1 channel.
When you talk to your friends about F1, just make sure they know! I appreciate it đ
@@brrrake you are improving rapidly but I do have some storytelling feedback:
you do a lot of "let's step back" "but first look at the" this can be jarring in your overall storytelling. I would suggest doing it once in the first quarter of the video and don't use it afterward. you can always go broad [topic] and then "let's take a deeper dive into why this is happening". Otherwise, you are switching back and forth through topics and depths of knowledge. I really like your content and see your progression in production quality, so that is why I am mentioning it!
So happy for Fernando, still got mega pace and excellent race craft. Please let's get the third and call it a day đđŒ
Unlike Schumacher and RÀikkönen, he didn't lose pace and his experience helps a lot too. He's still motivated, physically really on top still also he clearly enjoys the current form of the team and most importantly, he still loves racing competitively.
As always talking with numbers, fact and most important .... experience. My new favorite F1 channel
Thanks so much!
Great content. I'd love to see a comparisson between the AM and the RB. I don't see the similarity as RB people say, a copy, but I'd like to know your expert opinion.
Thanks for taking my feedback from last week and spending a bit more time explaining the graphs
Throtel at 6:56. Nice! Super informative - thank you!
CJ (my editor) is gonna buy you a beverage đ€Ł
Been an Alonso fan since 2003 so for him to finally be in a good seat makes me very happy đ
Great video as always. If merc goes to B spec car, that would leave the door open for AM. AM success is in their hands alone with the development as you stated. Good luck on catching super max but should be interesting to see how well AM will do.
Jordans 1st season was 91 famously giving M.schumacher a drive. Love the content, best channel for f1 content.
Thanks, Tony!! I knew I messed something up though!
Very easy to make mistakes with this stuff, such a wealth of info. No one can remember it all haha.

Thanks so much, Keith!
I was constantly refreshing your page for a video explaining Aston's pace during pretesting. You delve deep into the topic with solid data explanation and make it really understandable. It doesn't hurt that you are a ex-race engineer explaining to the actual f1 driver. Thanks for the video and looking forwards to more analysis from you. Cheersđ»

Killer video Blake! Much love.
Awesome Video đ Thank you for the insight into F1 race data
The Vola shirt
My favourite!
Praying for an Aston Martin evolution. We do need some fights at the top
Hi Blake and CJ, really nice presentation, high S/N ratio, great bridging between the tech and layman terms, seemed much faster than the running time.
One small thing at 04:00 is that AMR actually gets 43% (not 30%) more wind tunnel time than RBR, and Williams gets 64% (not 45%) more.
Related, comparing AMR and MB with the same drivetrain, what is the WT deficit for the latter over the past several years? Are the rules working as intended?
Great stuff, whatever happens this year, AM at the hands of the Dark Lord is super exciting stuff, can't wait for more wheel to wheel action between him and the Mercs, Ferraris and perhaps even the RBs at some point!
You just make the best F1 vids Blake, another masterpiece imo.
Thanks so much! I appreciate it!
I could listen to you all day man
Great analysis and I just subscribed.
Papa Stroll isnât messing around with all the new hires and new facilities. How he deals with a salty type like Horner, if Papa Stroll does rise to the bait, is also going to interesting.
Great F1 analysis and even better VOLA T shirt - Good taste in music too haha

Alonso is the only guy who could compete with Max in a car slightly slower than RB⊠maybe 1 or 2 tenths only tho
Why did this appear on my timeline? I donât know, but I love it. These technical deep dives helps me fall more and more in love with F1. Thanks so much for a great overview.
One question - you compare HUL to ALO. But I think we can all agree, Fernando is far superior. How much does this affect the gap from 22 to 23? Can that be quantified?
nice video, mate.

Awesome video to get the insights of a F1 performance engineer.
F1 tempo is really good if you are into the telemetry . Great vid i would love to see Alonso get 1 more WDC with Aston
This channel is what Iâve been looking for
This guy knows this business but more importantly he articulates it better than anyone else on youtube. Period!
You're too kind. Thank you!!
Love the video, is there a way to change the telemetry graphs to not use a red line? I have difficulty seeing it being partially color blind.
Or do the graphs come from another source.
Man, think what a beast of a team it would have been if Alonso and Vettel were teammates this year
Only one race in and people are going crazy about Austin Martin, thinking theyâre the best thing since sliced bread. Some of you folks obviously donât know much about motor racing!
@@c3bam1 woke up and became woke. It's called engagement bro, it's called fan theories. You don't want part of it don't be. and yeah, about motor racing, I am an engineer who can design a good racing car, been part of multiple race teams! what have you done mr woke đ€Ł
â@@c3bam1let us have fun thinking of imaginary battles between 2 among the greatest drivers on the grid!

At 3:55 it's technically 100/70-1=~43% more wind tunnel time than first place for Aston and 115/70-1=~64% more for 10th Williams. Had you said that Redbull has 30% less time than Aston you'd be correct. It also shows how math can be skewed to benefit one's opinions.
Interesting video đ
Thank you. Ben!
They are fast at slow speed corners but their straight line speed is still slower than the Bulls. They can improve.
A more fair comparison is the Merc as that is their target. Red Bull have pretty spectacular straight line speed and superior cornering grip. But I think there's more to come from Aston as well!
yes, data review! cheers

Nice VOLA shirt!!!!
The fact that Fernando overcut George around a high tire wear track like Bahrain bodes well.
This is the best f1 channel by far IMO
Thanks man!
Questions: given the new regulation regarding the use of wind tunnels, is it possible that we see teams "tanking", the same way some nba teams lose games on purpose in order to get a first pick at the next draft?
Also, don't you think Aston Martin's efforts to become world champions should be weighed against what the other teams are doing in terms of short and long term development? It's not like top and midfield teams are just rolling their thumbs waiting for Aston Martin to take over.
Brilliant !
5:37 I remember that
10:10
Would love this but doubtful
If youâre in the Austin area - I think That Cedar Feverâs hitting you đ I mean Iâd love for Nando to get a third , but RB was a beast - and if you e already addressed this in the video - I guess I better get to watching it instead of reacting to just the title.

Could you please do a video on Alpines development so far in 2023?
damnnnn, thats crazy
Do u think Aston would have been close to max if he was pushing all race and had the car balance right?
Blanden, Fallows and Fernando
Stroll has a vision and as a man that thinketh so shall it be
Random question : Can you tell us more about race engineers ? I always watch the sessions with alonso's driver cam and radio and I have so many questions.
Nando is chill but it's fascinating to hear his direct reactions. Aston's race engineer is way better than Alpine. I guess its not that easy to be the race engineer of two champions.
There are so many technical message, plans and trashtalk. Now that we have 9 GP, you could tell us more about the role of a driver race engineer.
Thanks..
Dan Fallows must be the real deal because Red Bull got quite defensive when Aston tried to get him. They did the same in 2013 when McLaren tried to sign him
Itâs also that he also took about 8 other Red Bull Engineers with him! Thatâs doesnât get talked about enoughâŠ
Oughh, Thats good Video!
Thanks Kacper!
Do you think that the Aston will close the gap to red bull with more wind tunnel allocation time? like aston finished P7, and red bull P1 + penalty
I don't think they will close much more than they have now this season. Let's see what happens next season though đ
I donât know the rules, but If A.M. does not validate and commission their wind tunnel can they be charged wind tunnel time by using it? In my job I can use anything I like to sharpen my skills but only qualified simulators can be used for âofficialâ training. Is that the same for F1? And so not validating would benefit.
There are specific rules, that I'm not familiar with, to do with wind tunnel commissioning and other specific types of testing. I think the FIA have been pretty good at not leaving too many loose ends here.
Do u think Mercedes threw away the wind tunnel time and penalty rb have to serve? And after the loss of so many personnel isn't the party over?
Aston Martin is the hero f1 needs right now
Is it possible, the capability of AM spending entire cost cap means unlike Williams who even tho has 45% more wind tunnel time doesnât have resources to make use of it , whereas a team like AM with no bottle necks is able to utilise the advantage of the regulations and make such leapsđ€đ€, given they switched concepts early into 22 season means they had almost entire year to understand the weakness and strength and exclusively concentrate to make their already average race pace stronger and their awful qualifying pace somewhat competitive??,
Wind tunnel and CFD time cost money. If it's coming out of the same limited cap, a team with less aero development time can put the time and money savings into other development. They needed to implement a financial handicap as well.
Notice Elias, that some time have really bad wind tunnels. I suspect all these years they been cheating a little, not a lot but a little on their horse power. But now with these really soft tyres they can't cheat. Those tyres get eaten up from the extra spin from their over powered engines.
@@mandarinandthetenrings2201 I'm sorry, but I don't understand which team or power unit you are talking about? Also, why would a more powerful power unit cause traction issues in corners or braking events? Red Bull would have shown worse tire wear since they arguably have the most powerful PU.
As for Aston Martin, as Blake has shown, has improved their traction with the same Mercedes PU they have been using since the start of this PU era. Also, Mercedes has said they have recovered lost power for this year over last from the fuel switch.
To an extent yes, but finding performance is mostly in the tunnel. Performance per dollar is da weigh in the aero
My guess/understanding is that wind tunnel is mainly used to validate CFD, and CFD is cheap. Implying that extra wind tunnel time gives diminishing returns faster than CFD. In other words, most of the aerodynamics design is done with CFD and limiting wind tunnel time isn't much of a handicap.
Mr.Brake, I would like to suggest thumbnail to have your trademark design or a logo to be different from others.
Often I find other F1 CZcamsrs with these title, will just skip it, because it's a click bait and they got no good content other than explaining 1 or 2 points.
Loud and clear. I am working coming up with a bit more of a theme and integrating my logo just to let you know it's the real deal. I'm glad you've found the channel and I'm glad you feel like I deliver on the "bait" of the thumbnail!
@@brrrake I believe thumbnail and Title is very important for all the CZcams channels.
Your content is definitely got a uphand then most F1 CZcams channel.
To be clear I have just started watching the video, and the answer must be surely based on development.
How is wind tunnel time determined? I mean how is it regulated by FIA? Don't teams have their own wind tunnels and can't they use them for as long they wish?
There is an auditing procedure and systems in place as well as CCTV that the FIA have access too. The FIA also have access to the control logs which note "wind on" time.
@@brrrake Thanks đ

Everyone makes mistakes. Surprised no one else caught it
Amazing channel and stories - just one nit to pick : the cost cap isn't really what it's presented to be. First off, there are three salaries which are exempt. But then, there are a ton of other things which are exempted for "reasons." Many of these teams are English companies and their records are somewhat public. Therefore, we can see what they ACTUALLY spend. The Silver Arrows spent nearly 400 million last year, well over 2.5 times the so-called cap. RBR spent nearly 350 million. In the case of Merc, this also ignores that the engine company is legally separate: client teams, including Merc themselves, spend 10 million per season to get all the engines and components. The engine business is NOT a subsid of the F1 team, rather it's a loss leader for Merc in Germany, nobody seriously pretends that the powertrain of an F1 car costs under 10 million for a season for 2 cars. The "cap" is basically imaginary and the reactions of the other teams to RB's "cap break" last year were pretty ridiculous once one takes 10 minutes to research the financials using freely-available information.
You are entirely not wrong!
Why didn't you compare Stroll to Stroll?
Comparing Alonso and HĂŒlkenberg would likely give bad data.
In qualifying I'll pick the fastest lap. None of the comparisons are perfect.
Hamilton stated that Mercedes have all Aston's data from wind tunel and because they use Mercedes engine and gearbox it's already 50% of Mercedes based.
What he insinuated is that Mercedes has "plan B" which if you read between the lines means basically copying Aston Martin concept.
If Mercedes does as Hamilton subtly sugested, we can expect them climbing back on top in next 10 races.
No Marko, you have to understand that Mercedes took a very narrow performance window, that they thought would give them insane speed. They thought their concept would be a rocket ship. But it proved to lead them to a dead end. They will improve but it is clear they just don't have enough down force on the car and they don't have grip to be efficient enough to generate the speed the they want.
They do not have Aston's data. That is illegal.
â@@brrrake
That was Hamilton statement. I suggest you read it.
Aston Martin uses Mercedes's wind tunel. Illegal or not Mercedes F1 team have data from Aston Martin aero testing, and Mercedes mentions plan "B" so you do the math.

What do you think made the Force India so efficient considering it's lack of funding?
I really like him. I was trackside or vehicle dynamics so honestly spent very little to no time interacting with him about work, but he was very good at his job and very well liked. Red Bull didn't want to lose him.
Feels like F1 is slowly being fixed but the concept of wind tunnel time is so ridiculous. There's an easy fix for this. You'll never have to worry about such convoluted ideas ever again. But whatever.
Can you elaborate? I'm not exactly following
@@brrrake Give everyone the same chassis. Let the engineers fiddle with brakes, engine and everything else to try to compete for that edge. Wind tunnel time just feels ridiculous. If parity is THAT important then just give everyone the same chassis. Let it come down to drivers, mechanical engineers and strats.
I'm a huge Alonso fan but let's be serious here. It's going to be Red Bull again. If Aston gets 5th this year I think it'll be a huge win for them. It's going to be RB, RB, Ferrari, Ferrari, Aston.
Also, get rid of DRS zones and give them 1.5 - 2 minutes of DRS that they can use at their own discretion. That would REALLY open up competition and get rid of MORE convoluted rules.
Just spittballin' here. Good video, btw, mate.

Red Bull dont leave meat on the bone
here for when in 2024 everyone comes here to call you the prophet
I'm just speculating!!
Bro 1 week ago you were saying Mercedes were sandbagging. Have SOME shame?
Where did I say they were sandbagging? If you're talking about twitter that was an insane level of sarcasm.
MERCEDES ONLY DID A SINGLE RUN IN FINAL QUALIFYING WHEN IT MATTERED THE MOST. WHICH IS WHY THEY WERE 6-7TEHTHS OFF. ENTIRE Q1-Q2 THEY WERE IN THE MIX 2TENTH TO FERRARI ON 2 EQUAL RUNS. I THOUGHT THEY WERE SAVING THAT TYRE FOR RACE DAY, LIKE FERRARI. BUT THEY DIDNT. BOTH LEWIS AND GEORGE STARTED ON USED TYRES. I JUST- DONT GET WHY? I WOULD BE STUPID TO THINK THEY DID THIS TO AVOID THE BAHRAIN CURSE đ
đso did Aston!!, only one run in q3 may be they wasted a set of softs in q1 during red flag ???
SINGLE RUN ISNT REALLY FAIR COMPARISON, BECAUSE DRIVERS LEAVE BIT OF MARGIN. IN Q1 EVERYONE DID A SINGLE RUN AND GEORGE TURNED OUT TO BE P2. SOME GOT IT RIGHT. SOME DIDNT. Q2 IS A GREAT COMPARISON, ALL FERRARI, MERCEDES AND ASTON DID 2 EQUAL RUNS OF FRESH SOFTS. THATS A GOOD COMPARISON. COMPARING TO ASTON. Q1, SINGLE RUN, OUT QUALIFIED. Q2, 2 EQUAL RUNS, OUT QUALIFIED. Q3, GOT BEATEN BY ASTON ON A SINGLE RUN. REDBULLS DID 2 FULL RUNS ON FRESH-FRESH SOFTS.
Because they had to use an extra set of softs to get into q3. They only had one new set for q3. It was only redbull and Ferrari that had two sets for q3. The Astonâs, Mercedesâ, Nico and Ocon all only did one run.
They are the copy-masters. So I think they will be weaker in 2024. Just like with the pink Mercedes. But the team is growing so I do think they have the potential to be there in a few years.
Their car is SO much different from the current Red Bull. I don't understand the comparison.
