Very informative- especially about the nitrogen. I’m about to plant a Fargesia rufa. I was going to mix some loamy topsoil (50%) I dug up from a neglected plot in my garden and mix it with WR horse manure, (20%) and PF Compost, (30%); as well as adding mycorrhizal fungi in the plant hole. Is this okay? Or is it all too much?
I'm curious about flowering?
I'm interested in growing bamboo for lumber, I think it would be fun to build a little structure out of bamboo I've grown obviously this is going to be a long project.
Would encouraging flowering make more bamboo?
Bamboo only flowers every 90-100ish years so you probably won't get any flowers. Just give your bamboo lots of compost and slow release nitrogen fertilizer. Look up moso bamboo if you're looking to produce lumber.

been looking all over for the info on black bamboo. You have it! ive just bought 2 in thier own pots. Growing well,too well,but thats ok,i think.do i have to top them?Brown tipped on leaves. Should i plant them in soil? My soil is clay under appx 12 inch of soil. iformation in your programmes would be helpful. Enjoyed my first viewing. Thankyou.
josiebird Hornby phyllostachys Nigra, black bamboo is a leptomorph, bamboo... meaning running. Don't create a soup bowl in the clay soil. Bamboo doesn't like to be overly saturated... it causes root rot.
You do not need to top them, let them grow and enjoy. Prune the dead culms/leaves in the early spring.

What happening in winter ? You said when its flowers its dies ? So its mean then you need to throw it away and plant new ones?
bamboo only flowers once every 50 or 100 years. so if you get a type that is currently flowering it will have a very hard time.
Are chicken pellets ok?
I am using composted chicken manure due to it being higher in nitrogen than other compost
