If you are looking to contain the growth, i really don't understand why you would plant runners. Propagate clumping bamboo instead that you can use in the garden for trellises etc.

Ignore this comment. Many of the best and most interesting bamboos are running types. The aggressive of the running is different for each bamboo. Things like rhizome blocker which he shows are digging a trench around the bamboo are easy to maintain. If you want to do the absolute minimum amount of work then yes plant a clumping bamboo.
