      I love reviewing a variety of gear for people who are interested in different gear. Not all of it's going to work for me but that doesn't mean it won't work for other people. It's always fun to discover new and different amplifiers. Thanks so much for commenting and for hanging out.

    That's probably in my top 10 favorite amps. I haven't got mine out in a long time, but I can't seem to sell it either. When buying used amps, you never know what's been done to it unless you try it. I bought a used framus cobra from reverb, based off a friend of mine who owed one. Mne sounded very different. The gain had to be on 10 it was not what I expected. I took in to be looked at, and all kinds of mods were done to it. The bias was way too hot. Preamp tubes were different from what the factor put in and a lot of other things. I got it back to stock, and it's still a pain in the a##, but in its original pain in the a## setting. I have been watching your channel for a while, so I never doubt your playing abilities. You sound and play great to me.

    Hey brother, been enjoying your videos, thank you for your time and sharing them with everyone.
    There are so many factors, in my opinion, that leads into good and bad experiences with amps and speakers. How you attack the guitar, how the guitar is set up, pickups, the variances in tolerance on components in the amp, how much voltage you have available (in my house, my voltage averages between 113 and 126 on any given day at any given time) and even friggin humidity affects how some speaker cones react. And I will add to the point by saying look at the wall of amps in the background. Thats a huge key in this. Tones are like seasonings. Some days you like just a little salt and pepper. Other days you want to go to the top shelf and throw a little bit of everything on it. And saying that, some amps work better on some songs and styles than others. My last recording, on top of my modelers, I probably used between 8 and 10 heads. I had my favorites yes, but sometimes what may have not been my favorite was a better match for the song.
    And I can't agree more seeing people say that some of them are VERY unforgiving amps. You got to be on your "A" game or you need to just pass by the VHT some days. LOL. Ive owned a couple over the years, just didn't use them enough to constitute keeping them around, so I sold them to friends so I can borrow them when needed :).
    Keep it up! Get your rock on every day!

    The problem is you played 2 different kinds of VHTs. The CL has EL34s. The Ultra Lead has KT88s. I wasn’t a fan of the Ultra Lead when I owned it. I have yet to try the CL, but would love the chance one day. Good vid.

    • @ItsMetabtw
      @ItsMetabtw Před 17 dny

      That won’t make as big of a difference as you think it might. The old power amp was specifically designed for KT88, just as this is specifically designed for EL34. That means the screen and grid voltages, feedback loop, phase inverter, bias etc are all purposefully chosen to work within the tube spec and be as neutral as possible. Oftentimes people try swapping tubes, and adjust the bias, but everything else is out of range and that contributes to the difference in sound way more than the tube itself

    • @thomasedward1525
      @thomasedward1525 Před 16 dny

      @@ItsMetabtw Actually, it does. Having previously owned an Ultra Lead, I can tell there’s a big difference with sounds just from the video. Granted, getting a CL in my hands is another thing, but even Fryette stated he was working to achieve different sonic results with the Ultra Lead compared to the rest of the VHT line at the time in the 90s.

    I like the amps you demo on your channel, but it always bothers me that you literally dime the gain on every amp before you add the boost. Even when you were demoing the tone features of this amp, having the gain all the way up means your basically allowing every available frequency in, therefore you cannot hear any of the subtle or dramatic changes those controls like edge and shift etc. actually do. Then you jam a boost in front of it and it becomes maximum gain mush, some amps handle it some don’t. It’s just not necc. back up on the gain a bit and let the boost flavor the distortion, you’ll get a tighter more clear tone with the character of the boost your using. Fryette is known for being super clear and articulate and can do both low, mid and high gain really well. You’re playing type is only centered to high gain, prob why at one point you didn’t like it.

      @andrewredmon4119 Před 29 dny +4

      Exactly. Not every amp sounds great with the gain maxed out. Try 3 o'clock. There have been many killer albums tracked with these amps with ZERO boost. It doesn't need it.

    I've had a VHT version PB UL for 10+ years. You're right, it must have a boost (I use 808 variants). The EQ absolutely makes the difference. The last UL you did a demo was a no-EQ version and it sounded lifeless (and, they're not all created equal regardless of the EQ). The dry sound is an acquired taste but it grows on you. And it helps cut through in a mix/live situation. The clean channel is great for running dirt pedals if that your thing.

    I've had the UL and a 100CL (which I still have). It's generally a lot less dry and unforgiving than the UL. It's still the driest and most unforgiving amp I own. I'm not generally a "boost all my amps" player but the Pittbulls really do benefit from a good boost imo. The KSR Eros really works well with the CL ime. Running the master volume past 2'o clock really opens up the amp fyi.

    When it all comes down to it, it’s all a matter of personal preference and taste. In my case, I have a Revv Generator 120 MKIII and I think it’s the greatest amp ever while so many other players (including a few of my friends) think it’s pretty much “meh”. It’s just not for them but it certainly works for me. Getting back to the Pittbull, the closest I got to one was the Synergy module that I tried at the Sweetwater store and that was definitely a 👎🏻 from me.

    As for the playing, it is quite good and i see no issue there but there seems to be some technical problems involved that might have an impact on how people, myself included perceive your videos. To me its definitely a rhythm guitar amplifier and not very bright for pushing the leads through. Not sure if thats what you are considering dry? CZcams sucks for real sound anyway. But it also has something I don't like about it. Its like some kind of half cocked open wha sound maybe? Now your purple guitar the leads came through alright in the mix.
