      @@schumi246Personally, not even Imola 1994 is the scariest day in F1 history. For me, it’s the 1961 Italian Grand Prix when Wolfgang von Trips collided with Jim Clark and was killed along with 15 spectators

      @@drewgriffithsfm I'd like to add Zandvoort 1973, Roger Williamsson crashed and David Purley parked his car to help out, trying to flag down other drivers to help out, the other drivers thought that it was Davids car that was on fire and since there wasn't a red flag, they simply drove past the accident.
      If even 1 or 2 drivers had stopped, they could've maybe overturned Williamssons car and gotten him out since their suits were more fireproof than the marshalls.
      But instead they had to live with the fact that they drove past a man who was slowly suffocating to death, and they didn't find out until after he died.

    Horrible, horrible accident.
    For me personally an accident like this was the reason I initially had reservations regarding the Halo.
    A driver trapped in his burning car unable to get out because the Halo blocked what little room he would have had to get out.
    After this race I realised, while this might be a possibility, there is also the possibility he would have any survival room without the Halo in the first place.

  • @dfxl6587
    @dfxl6587 Před 29 dny +9

    As a spectator of F1 since 1963, I can assure you this is certainly not the scariest day in F1 neither was Imola 1994 but they were tragic.
    Unfortunately I have watched multiple drivers burn to death and being decapitated. Cars flew off the track into the trees lining the circuit killing the driver and so on. No barriers back then.
    Today F1 is unbelievably safe, in the past Grosjean would most likely not have survived the initial impact let alone the fire. I will add all lives lost in sport are tragic, and to the various F1 influencers, please do not make tragedy a competition.

    I've been an F-1 fan since the late 60's early 70's so I remember the times when drivers were killed regularly. Grosjean said that 28 seconds seemed like a minute 30 but to me watching the race live it seemed much longer than that. I still actually shuddered writing this. Miracle he made it out.

    • @nickbohn2368
      @nickbohn2368 Před 5 měsíci +13

      Yeah I think without the halo, his head would have went directly into the guardrail as the car went into the barrier. Because of the halo’s strength, the guardrail slid along the halo and was pushed over his head as the car punched through the barrier

    • @Trakkson
      @Trakkson Před 5 měsíci +8

    That has got to be the most terrifying part of a slow death. Just finally accepting your fate, and just giving up.
    But at the same time; it would kind of be like this huge weight was lifted off of your shoulders. You no longer have to worry about the next rent, or the next race, or what you are going to do if you get fired.
    You are just at peace with the fact that this is your last moment on this planet.

    The Scariest Day In Formula 1 History is a bit of a stretch. There were many other accidents that marked the history of F1. Like for example, May 1994. 2 dead drivers, 1 injured driver and several wounded mechanics. Niki Lauda's crash in 1976, or the deaths of Tim Pryce and steward Jansen van Vuuren in 1977.

    Everyone praises the halo but it very near killed him that day too, its the reason he was stuck. The rail was over the top of the halo, cutting the escape in half. He initially tried to get out the smaller side and couldnt. If the car had penetrated just an inch or two less, it would have trapped him there.
