Gearing up for some large makeovers next week and I couldn’t be more excited. I wanted to slow down and take a beat to give some basic tips and tricks from electrical to door hardware. I know this is a simple makeover but thought it'd be great for those of you thinking you need all these tools to make the biggest difference - you do not!

This is for all my humans that keep hitting me up about what can you do without all the tools - where here's a take on it first go around! Same thing with Tanya's studio makeover. We are headed into some really insane makeovers that I am so damn proud of so we're taking it easy this past week. September is hands down one of my favorite months of makeovers ...eek!

I love how you explain how things are done. As a 50+woman, I feel we were never taught how to do simple hardware fixes... always were encouraged to learn to sew and crap like that... great to be taught these simple fixes by another woman. Thank you soooo much!!!

It’s also great in smaller rooms as it makes the space look magically bigger. I’ve done black dyed plaster from above my head hight in my tiny bathroom and I will never do white walls and ceilings again in smaller places.
I AGREE!! the way Rachel used the black ceiling with the door at the end of the hall gave the illusion it is like an infinity hall or something
I have toyed with painting my hallway ceiling black for quite awhile. I so wish we could have seen the way the black ended as you approached the front door area. The problem I'm having is deciding how to transition the black and the white ceiling.
Charisma Hornum-Fries I have a small bedroom and not a lot natural light comes in it’s kinda dark,painting the ceiling black will help?Because I thought that it would really darken the room as it is already small and dark
Hey don’t get discouraged about having to redo the electrical a few times. My husband was an electrician, and he’s told me over and over again that when your putting lights and new fixtures into old houses (and houses in general) not everyone who previously wired them, wires them correctly and it can be confusing to figure out how it was previously wired to make it right for the new fixtures. So even professionals have their days when they have to go back and forth and trace the problem. He said a lot of his work was just following wires until you found the one wire that was giving all the problems 😂 your doing a great job girl! Keep up the good work!

I wish you had used painters tape when painting the edges of the ceiling and doorway, it would have looked nice having a sharp line
Hahaha my impatience gets the best of me. I have about 50 projects at once. Paint touch ups are easy to go back to xx.
The texture on the walls and ceiling make it difficult, it will never be a true clean line.
V M I’d have to add some kind of straight trim to achieve a clean break, I couldn’t look at those wobbly lines every day.
I love the way the black door in the hallway ‘disappears’ when the lights are off, such an illusion it’s so cool 😎

Yes, why are the simplest tasks the hardest? I have brought to tears over them and sometimes it feels like every step to getting something done is an endless battle. Lol Rachel the first thought I had was, "I know she's going to change out that boob light". That's the first thing I did when i purchased my home last year was change out the light fixtures ( well my handyman) I actually bought that same light fixture from lowes.com. it makes such a difference in my hallway. Awesome job once again!

I need this. My dad replaced all the switches in my house that I bought 2 years ago but I am having an issue with shorting out for my bedroom and dining room (plant gallery). I think the wire overheated and he says I need to trace the wire and repair it...dont know how man. I'm not too worried. What ever a carpenter or electrician can do, there is Google university, the Rachel channel, and DIY land. I always leave inspired after watching your videos.
We got this! I have my dad helping me with something similar and I can't wait to learn.

I’m really not a fan of the wood slats covering the door. It looks like a jail cell. Maybe some hanging plants or photos can help.
Def do that! That's great feedback. This is Holly's house so her design rules go here. I don't think there is a right or wrong way to design since it's only your space that will need correction since you love and live there, you know?

I love the plant idea but it sort of is a puppy prison lol they've gotta have line of site but have you ever tried to stop a big pooch from leaving a room without a gate/door? It's ruff... I'm sorry...
I think the optical illusion looks great! with the incredibly short ceiling and how gorgeous the light fixture is, I would have probably left off the glass cover that hides a lot of the gorgeous gold frame and the Edison bulbs. oh and completely off subject, I love your earrings.

It’s a real treat working on these old so-cal homes. When I was replacing some of our outlets and fixtures some of the outlets weren’t grounded properly by whomever did it last, so much old wiring and most the wires were old horsehair wires and all black. I’ve been wrapping the hot wires with some red electrical tape when taking them apart to remind myself which wire was hot.
Electrical is so weird everywhere I've lived.

I LOVE it. Simple and the the black is hot. I think the gold handles would add nice contrast without messing with the black and white theme. The black ceiling tricks the eye to thinking the ceiling is higher and thus making the hallway appear longer and bigger. Just painting the wall and trim the same color does the same for small rooms as well.
