    The new Toyota Prius came out for 2023, and nothing has changed for 2024. Still very hard to find at the dealers, the new Prius has become a highly-desired fuel sipper with impressive power and design.

    I think Toyota kept Prius production low because they were afraid the Prius wouldn't sell well and didn't want to risk being stuck with a pile of unsold inventory like Ford is with the Mustang Mach-E. Keep in mind Prius sales have declined significantly over the last decade and there was no guarantee the new Prius would take off like it has.
    I'm also hoping Toyota can increase Prius production quickly but I wouldn't hold my breath. I think Toyota management underestimated demand when setting production plans for the Prius and was caught completely off-guard by the Prius' newfound success. Immediately increasing production from currently planned levels would be very expensive and difficult to achieve, so I think Toyota will opt to spread out production increases over a couple years to keep costs controlled and reduce the risk of overproduction.

    Kirk been following your channel for a long time. I live in Canada just outside of Toronto. I ordered a Prius XLE AWD on December 10, 2022 prior to car going on sale in Canada. I got delivery of a 2024 Prius on December 21, 2023. No mark ups in Canada. Paid MRSP. I had also ordered a Prius Prime XSE on April 8, 2023 but the dealership stated it would at least another year before it would be available. I have been very happy with the regular hybrid. Keep up the great car reviews on your channel.

      Nice! I am also in the GTA (Milton), and have had my Prime since August. Fantastic car. Agreed that pricing in Canada is easier since dealerships are not allowed by law to sell new vehicles above MSRP, and the $5K federal rebate make the Prime a no-brainer in Canada…. If you can find one! That said, I do know a few people in Ontario who have already got their hands on one, and I lucked out with a dealership having one come with without a buyer, so I was able to get it in about 3 months, and canceled my deposit with my local dealer... If you are on the west side of Toronto and see a yellow prime drive by, it may very well be me so give a wave! 😉

    Kirk, excellent review, as always. As someone who looks at a computer screen all day long, does the infotainment and digital instrument cluster bother you? We are inundated with digital displays everywhere we turn. I long for analog gauges. If I need maps, I'd use my phone. There's something calming about an unfussy dash that allows the driver to concentrate on the real world in front of them, outside the windshield. I love the Prius. It's my favorite car of 2023 but I'm not sure if I can live with all the digital cr*p everywhere. I would be tempted to get a Volvo XC40 (though it only gets 26 mpg) instead of the Prius because of the less intrusive instrument cluster and smaller infotainment screen that's inset lower in the dash.

    • @KirkKreifels
      @KirkKreifels  Před 3 měsíci +1

      It doesn't bother me at all. You can always opt for the 8" screen instead in the lower trims.

    We’ve had our 2024 Prius Prime XSE Premium for just two weeks now. It replaces our old 2014 Prius. While I was thrilled with this new Prius initially, every time I drive it I like it even more. Would I have purchased this trim level if a lower trim had been available? Probably, not, but finding any Prius Prime in a state just next door, we had no qualms about grabbing it. Believe it or not, we’ve been trying to get a plugin since the spring of 2021! If you don’t live in a CARB state, good luck finding a Prime at any trim level locally. I agree with everything that Kirk has talked about. And I certainly cannot believe that Toyota has been so stingy with new Prius Prime allocations.

      I have the 2023 version in the same trim as you. Got it in September with a full tank and I've only put $15 of gas since. Still have a quarter tank of that original gas. Will need to use it soon though because I've read gas starts to become stale after 6 months.
      I especially love to drive it in EV mode. It's fun to drive especially right off a dead stop. It has a good amount of low end torque in EV mode.
      I waited 6 months to get mine in the Los Angeles area. And it would have been longer had another customer hadn't canceled his similar trim reservation to mine. The only option it didn't have was the Technology Package. The rep told me that Toyota wasn't building Prime's with that option due to problems with the automatic parking assist feature. They were only including it with the regular Prius back then. The main reason I wanted it was for the digital mirror and rear heated seats. I could have declined it, but was afraid I would have to wait for many more months to also get it with the Tech Package. I needed a car because my 19 year old Prius started having the blacked out guage cluster problem and sometimes I couldn't turn it off. Ifound two hacks to fix the problems but it had happened twice in the three previous months. So, I took ownership of the 2023 model they offered me. I did get my preferred color though, Reservoir Blue.

    I was able to average high 50 to low 60 on the previous gen after a year highest was 80s for about 200 mile cool summer no ac needed lowest was high 40s winter. With heat.
    Seats were not comfortable because of short cushions very little thigh support and no individual tilt or the bottom.

      @KirkKreifels
      Prius Prime is coming to UK, they've changed their mind in Toyota. However, unfortunately there will be no simple hybrid Priuses in Europe at all, that's a shame. PHEV is 10000 euro more than 1.8L CHR, or 6000 above the 2.0L, thus there could be a similar gap for prius. 10000 euro is enough for gas for 50-60k miles, that's insane. Probably plug-in will pay for itself around 150k miles.... 😂

    • @Airtemeus
      @Airtemeus Před 3 měsíci +1

      Prius is better than CHR, test drived both, suspension is better, handling is better... However - Prius is only PHEV in Europe, no towbar for prius, not possible to get high trim with 360 deg camera and other options without solar roof, etc, etc. And solar roof is +5000 more. Who need the solar roof for this price? It will give 3 miles of range per day in case of staying full day outside in the sun. Max 600 miles per year of additional range if you live in the south and don't have a garage.
      For CHR it's possible to get whatever you want in all combinations. 1.8 Hybrid, 2.0 Hybrid, Awd 2.0 Hybrid and 2.0 PHEV. Toyota did everything to force people bying CHR in Europe.

In my 4th gen Prius, when I brake over bumpy or gravel road, it very often lurches forward for a brief time and it makes you feel the car was out of control, just briefly. Looking in Prius forums, that seems to be very common, but I am hoping it is fixed in the 5th gen.

      Depends on your budget honestly.
      If you want more power + great fuel economy, more premium features then the new Prius is the way to go. The one negative about this Prius it seems, is the visibility. Because of the new design there seems to be a compromise in visibility.

    Toyota putting 195’s on this is insane I get they do it for efficiency but I doubt putting 235’s makes the fuel economy that much worse

    • @shinn43
      @shinn43 Před 3 měsíci

      I don't have the math to back it up but a 40 mm x 4 (all wheels) is a big difference when it comes to frontal area and how it affects fuel efficiency. Not to mention the difference in weight. Used a tire weight calculator to estimate the difference between a 195/50/R19 and 235/40/R19, avg weight of 55 vs 59 lb respectively ~ 16 lb difference. Minimal but it's weight loss which is hard to do. Besides that what is there to gain on a 235 mm tire? Car is made for commuting and grand touring instead of tracking/autocrossing where lateral grip is required. In a market where people are pursuing either electric or more fuel efficient cars, it makes sense why they chose to maximize fuel efficiency over aesthetic on the tire choice.

      The bigger the contract patch, the worse the mpg’s. I would estimate about a 4-5 mpg decline with a 235 series tire.

      Somewhat wider tires using a smaller wheel diameter would probably not lose much MPG, if any. That's an important question though.

    • @shinn43
      @shinn43 Před 3 měsíci

      @@readtherealanthonyfaucibyr6444 Yes if you use a smaller wheel diameter because you've reduced weight. However, it'll be more fuel efficient with narrower tires especially for city driving (frequent start & stop).

    XLE is worth it for the wheels alone, as the wheel covers on the LE are ugly as hell. Also the smart key on the LE doesn’t work on the passenger door or the trunk! And no front and rear parking assist, or garage door opener, on the LE. Finally, no luxurious, stain-resistant and easy-to-clean Softex FAUX leather seats in the LE. (Even you liked the steering wheel feel, which is Softex on all trims, but only XLE and Limited have Softex on all the seats.)
    Oh, and the LE has nearly 1/2 inch less ground clearance which matters at only 5.6 inches, vs. 6.0 inches on the XLE.
    The blinking light strip is actually a helpful notification of traffic moving again! The larger 12.3”infotainment screen is unnecessary (and is a costly OPTION, not standard, on the XLE), and worse, has volume knob inconveniently on passenger side! The 8” screen is more than large enough, with the volume knob on the driver’s side, where it should be.

      I paid $33,000 for my new top trim 2004 Prius. That included a $3,000 mark up over sticker. This 2nd gen Prius was the it car in 2004. The only hybrid car in existence at the time. It introduced the Hybrid Synergy Engine to the world. Drove it for 19 years and put 282,000 miles on ut. Finally, replaced it with a 2023 Prius Prime XSE Premium and paid MSRP, around $41,000.
