April, another example of how you have exemplified the maker community. I started watching your channel when you were in your infancy here on CZcams, and every video you produced had this innocence to it. But now, you have grown to be this master in front of a camera. You learned every skill with desire and brut strength. You are so good at what you do, and I am intrigued every time your videos come out. The AW command center, aka The Wood Shop, is loaded for bear. Congratulations to you, and thanks for sharing with all of us.

My goal is to grow my woodworking business until I can afford land in Arkansas! Once I can afford that, I’ll save money for a few more years and hopefully be able to build my own house on 30-40 acres of land. (With lots of trees)
I want to be able to cut my own wood, and build my own business!

April, I respect you for your Git-R-Dun attitude, your motivation and enthusiasm for doing these things (wood milling and CNC production) that I see as wa-a-a-a-a-ay beyond what I can do. Love that dogging system and that's an ingenious use of a piece of plywood to span the distance between log bunks and support the log. So many sawmills space the log bunks to far apart, after milling for a few years I have found that log bunks should be no more than 2 foot apart to make sure that no matter what length the log is the ends are supported. :)

Hi April, I'm surprised that those mills don't have a blade guard to prevent cutting into a back stop. ;) I built one on my mill a few years ago as the back stops all had cuts in them when I bought it. Ground them out and welded them up. Now a few weeks ago, I tried to cut a back stop, but the guard I built wouldn't allow me to. At first, I thought it was debris on the track stopping the advancement of the carriage 'til I realized what actually happened. Gotta love it. Mine is a home/shop built mill fully manual and solidly built mobile set-up. I marked my back-stops and know that I'm clear to 1/4" above the highest one, but if I forget, I'm saved. :) Have a great day and take care.

Now you need the industrial pneumatic vacuum tube freeze drier. Slab size. The process captures the colors of the fresh cut that will otherwise denature in a kiln drying process or from sunlight (photo sensitive wood) and O2, stabilize the wood from excess warping, and cuts the drying time significantly.

That saw is miles away from our Belsaw mill which we powered first with a Ford Jubilee then with a 1963 Chevy pickup which had to be run in reverse. That Chevy 6 just ate the logs. There was no difference in the difficulties involved in handling logs except we could only go up to about 24" dia. Northern Indiana hardwoods.

Not at all! Matt is like family and a good friend of April's and he realizes a mobile band saw has its uses. She still uses the one they built together when needed.

I am going to purchase a mill this year. I have whittled it down to the WoodMizer. Looking forward to it and it is nice to see others sharing their experiences. I looked into the chainsaw mill but they are really slow. If you don't already have a chainsaw available the cost of this can get well over $2K so I am just putting that towards a portable. I have my own timber which I had some milled to build my house. On to the next stage. :)

April, I have a behemoth of a locust tree I will probably be taking down in near future. Wanted to find out if locust is worth milling? Where would one search for a miller? What would be the minimum length of the tree to make the milling useful? (Trees in a tight spot that may prevent it from being felled full length)

Have you thought about setting up with the finish end of the bed a little lower than the start end so gravity will help pull the carriage/blade through the log?

A lot of great ideas in one mill, a first for me to even hear of one so April, you have come a long way from selling some garden products in I believe it was washington when I first spotted you. You outgrew the first location and now are a power ball of energy

Oh, I still have my 4000 sq ft personal Shop I built, but use that for my content projects. I wanted a retail space so people aren't coming to my home to buy slabs, etc. Thanks for watching.
