  • Day 550. The history of Ukraine and Russia is a subject that has come up again and again on this podcast. Good history and ‘bad’ history underpin how all of us understand the origins, reasons and justifications for the ongoing full-scale invasion. One guiding light is Ukrainian historian Serhii Plokhy: professor of Ukrainian history and Director at the Ukrainian Research Institute at Harvard University.
His books, from ‘The Gates of Europe’ to the recently released 'Russo-Ukrainian War' are essential reading for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of Ukraine and its history.
David Knowles spoke to Professor Plokhy recently about Ukrainian and Russian history, parallels with the Second World War and revelations in his new book.

I really want to thank Russia, too. I want to thank them for so comprehensively neutering themselves militarily, socially, economically, industrially, technologically, etc, during one of the most monumental historical screw ups in history in their invasion of Ukraine. Serhii Plokhy did a great job of making sense of a lot of things. I thought I understood most of this, but he filled in a lot of blanks and verified many of my conclusions. I'm just a bit older than him and generally a student of history, but Plokhy added a lot to my understanding of events and the history preceding them. I greatly enjoyed listening to him and I think it actually speaks a lot to what the eventual outcomes will be.
I wish more people would pay more attention to history. Often the past and its influence on the present, can be a pretty reliable predicter of the future.

Yushchenko, not Yanukovich!!! Yushenko ran against Putin-supported Yanukovich and was poisoned during the campaign (sound familiar?). He won in a re-election after the orange revolution against Yanukovich after the Supreme court ordered a fresh election.
Yanukovich was elected in 2010 and was flown out by Putin in 2014 (Source: VV Putin, "Crimea-coming home") after he broke 2010 election promise and joined Russia instead of EU. He also stole billions and his private police killed protesters in the Maidan Revolution of Dignity 2013-2014. His police (Berkut) went to Crimea to help the annexation then went to Donbas.

RuZZia and Ukraine are two DIFFERENT peoples. To put it very simply Ukrainians were democratic and wanted freedom but were SUPPRESSED for centuries. "RuZZians" were NOT democratic and were imperialistic (RuZZia was the Muscovian Empire, now called the RuZZian Federation).
Ukrainians did not just SUDDENLY want to be free or democratic--they ALWAYS were that way and tried to gain their freedom at every opportunity (numerous statehoods) but were always SUPPRESSED by their neighbours!

That was a lesson in rewriting history from Serhii Plokhy. USA has attempted around 60 regime change operations around the world since WWII. Most were successful including the coup they instigated in Ukraine in 2014 which led to the removal of Viktor Yanukovych - the democratically elected president whose policies ensured peaceful relations with Russia. Victoria Nuland was in Ukraine at the time - a recording of her conversation with another US official about which person to choose for president is still available. (The same Victoria Nuland later admitted in a US Foreign Relations Senate hearing in March 2022 to the presence of biolabs in Ukraine which she was concerned Russia would capture).

To many references being made about China and Taiwan. Last time I checked there are no countries that border Taiwan with the same interests and willingness to support them. China is more likely leaning an easier way to retake Taiwan. China has already taken many actions to do so and with the war in Ukrainian China will use lessons learned to make some changes in their plans. What I see is a failure in Taiwan to do what they must do to survive an attempt from China to take them. I fear the west will began to fail in its support of Ukrainian in 2024 and the tide of war could flip in 2025 in Russia getting what it wants through Trumps election.

This isn’t a political war, it’s a war of genocide - Putin can’t claim that Ukrainians are Russian (on one hand) and launch terrorist missile attacks on civilian targets (on the other) - he can’t have it both ways.

Russians still control part of this tiny hamlet Robotyne and it's driving Zelenskyy nuts. He can't take this tiny hamlet about 5 miles away from Ukrainian controlled Orekhov since June 4 and the first main line of Russain defense is still 9 miles away from Robotyne.🤣 Ukrainian army in its current dismal state proved to be completely impotent. In fact the situation is so catastrophic that Zelenskyy even banned highly pro-Ukrainian western media to come anywhere near the frontline . Some Ukrainian soldiers on condition of anonymity were too candid with western reporters in describing Zelenskyy's mass slaughter of hapless Ukrainian conscripts . For example, NYT is quoting wounded Ukrainian soldier as saying: “We were shot like on a shooting range.” According to his fellow soldier “his battalion had suffered so many dead and wounded that only 10 men remained at the front line”. WaPo is reporting that yet another Zelenskyy debacle caused bitter recriminations on Capitol Hill: "The bleak outlook, briefed to some Republicans and Democrats on Capitol Hill, has already prompted a blame game inside closed-door meetings". Obsessed with deadlines Zelenskyy firmly made up his mind to take Robotyne at all cost by August 24, but even here he failed miserably. According to NYT, it was too much even for outgoing general Milley and he ordered Zaluzhny to finally stop this obsessive Zelenskyy Bakhmut lunacy and concentrate all remaining forces on the South instead (Since May 20 when Russians took Bakhmut General Syrsky (Zelenskyy minion) launched wave after wave of suicidal counterattacks failing to retake a single village near Bakhmut while wasting thousands upon thousands of hapless Ukrainian conscripts).
