Cyndi Lauper is the artist whose music saved me as a child. No exaggeration there.
At a very young age where I was isolated and felt like there was no one like me on earth and my peers told me that was true, she was a blazing bright light of gentle but fully unapologetic uniqueness in the world. I thought as kid countless times, "Cyndi is amazing and unlike anyone else in the world and if she can make a place for herself then maybe I can too."
Her music and public personna gave me hope that there was a place in the world for unusual people and I held onto that until I reached young adulthood and finally found my tribe in the world.
I am so very glad you've found her. She is a powerhouse vocalist, a brilliant songwriter, a one of a kind showperson... I look forward to you exploring her many other sensational songs.
She is one of the bright lights in this world making it a better place to live.

I have the same experience but with an other artist. IÂŽm writing here because I now what it is like and want to tell you how great it is of you to share this. Artist as role models are so important and I believe have saved a lot of people from feeling lonely and like misfits. When your young and feel like you different from the people aronud you itÂŽs easy to think that there is something wrong with you even though of course it isnÂŽt. Arists can help through music, lyrics and persona. Cyndi is such a good role model with her way of standing up for herself.
(My hero is Brian Wilson, not the best role model but the absolute greatest survivor. His music very literally saved me.)

Crawled back into bed, put my head on the pillow and then heard this line played, "if you're lost you can look and you will find me". Made my eyes pop open. It was NOT like I was thinking of the song. I wasn't. I was half asleep. It suddenly sounded loud in my head in a way that startled me. Totally felt like a message from my father. Have loved Cyndi since I was 13. I went to her concert in 1983. Best Concert I've been to still today and I'm 52. She's so unique and such a great talent. You should check out "I'm Gonna be strong" to see how powerful her voice actually is. Fun fact, the man playing her boyfriend was her actual boyfriend and manager at the time. Also, the woman playing her Mother is her actual Mother. Cyndi has many Great songs. She's still one of my favorites today. I discovered a Norwegian artist named "Aurora" who kind of reminds me of Cyndi. You should check out Aurora as well. Both are so unique and special.

I'd recommend all those singles from that first album, never mind the title song from the next album, which I also recommend. I highly, highly suggest All Through The Night. It really shows off her profound emotional quality, her musical beauty, and her unique style - all in one. Also, Girls Just Want To Have Fun is not just a throw away song. 100% worth a deep dive listen, because it truly is a thing of beauty and brilliance, wrapped up in a perfect pop song. I usually only comment on rock songs, but Cyndi is absolutely a real deal, heavy hitting, legend.
And thank you for being such an awesome appreciator of music, Sal! It really means the world to artists to have people like you, respecting and loving the art like you do. ❀

My daughter was starting to talk. Time After Time came on the radio and started to cry. She was in the back in her car seat and tears were coming. I asked her "what's wrong?" She just wanted me to turn off the song. So much emotion. Like the first time I heard Claire de Lune.

A great song finds a place in your heart, regardless of what it means to other people. My nephew died at 35 of an undiagnosed freak heart problem. That summer I would run on a remote trail and when this song came on my play list I would just sob. It still hurts and this song still makes me cry.

Cyndi Lauper's emotional songs were the reality to Madonna's glam pop. Both share equal greatness in my 80s mind. Cyndi even had the honor of legend Roy Orbison covering her song "I Drove All Night" during his career resurgence in the late 80s. She's that good. You should listen to both versions if you get the chance. 😊

Check out her live version of "Change of Heart." It's from recent years, and this lady has not slowed down one bit. High energy performance, incredible vocals, and ends with an amazing instrumental from her lead guitarist and violinist.
