    3. Top goalscorer for England
    4. Managed to play at top level for 10+ years!!
    5. Been on 6 Fifa covers (06-12) ;)

    Michael Owen could have gone on to become one of the greatest strikers of all time but injuries ruined him. People sometimes forget just how good he was for England and Liverpool aged 17-23.

      agreed, Given that he achieved more than most with the injuries he had imagine what he could have achieved if he was able to stay injury free. He would surely be way ahead of Rooney on Englands all time goalscorer list

      Benitez let him ship out waay too soon, instead of putting an arm around his young shoulders and making him feel 'loved' and wanted by LFC. I really never got what that was about.Third choice at Real, then the injuries, it was just never the same for his career from that point.

    Pato, Saviola, Robinho, Drenthe, G Dos Santos, Bojan, Kezman, Kranjcar, Andres d Alessandro, Kakuta, Januzaj, Wilshere and Anderson were tipped to be great footballers based on their performances against top opponents at an early age. They all should have been on the list instead of Rooney , Owen and Podolski who had great careers. And no one thought Berahino or Rodwel would be world beaters.

    • @hawkstrike18
      @hawkstrike18 Před 5 lety +2

      You, sir... it's likely that you're the only pleasant surprise here.
      To be fair, I think I can safely say that we all forget many players who probably deserve to be on such lists. But, now that I've made that clear... god, it makes me kind of mad to see how many people think they know football when they easily forget all those talented players you mentioned and many more (not only ones who were playing in attack!), and they mainly remember *some* top class players from that era (or whatever era they got to live themselves but this is obviously about 2000 onwards, lol) plus the occasional name they see on some list/video like this one.
      From what I've seen recently, Quaresma would be a perfect example of that. Many mention him lately but I bet few would ever do if he hadn't been in certain popular videos lately (prior to scoring that goal in the world cup, mind you), even though he's done some magical things and he's still not that bad.
      ...and here I am, wishing his teams/coaches would use him more wisely, even now. More or less, same case as Cassano, or yh, Kezman, which is the name I was curiously searching for in this comment section... Seriously, this guy had incredible reflexes, which is like a true superpower for a striker, hence he was one of my favorites if not my favorite :p well, it'll always make me sad how early he ended his career. And imo, he's a great example of a player who never gets credit for the skills he actually had, for playing with his brain, pressuring defenses as much as possible, while also being a teamwork player and a reliable scorer, as well as keeping a low profile ...unlike all the brazilians of that period, Balotelli, and all the rest.... then again, the whole serbian team was so skillful back then, same as the czech one and many more. They just don't make them like they used to, haha. I guess it's just that football in general has lost its purpose to an extent :/
      And that leads me to say that I'm convinced that there are countless examples of other players who could become great/famous but never even became pro, for whatever reasons. Tbh we need a better football than the shitty "product" that it has become and perhaps the only way to get it now is to start organizing new leagues of our own or something like that.
      p.s. some ppl mention Raul and Torres here... wtf? Rooney has also been a top class player indeed, though everything is relative so maybe there's an excuse to include him (well, at least if it was a top 20 or 30 it would be). Yup, so many people have no idea about football at all, and it's rather scary to think that they deal with serious issues in life too, considering their lack of common sense :s

    I read a book that made a really interesting argument about Michael Owen: the ligaments in his knees were "high-twitch," which meant that he could be really speedy and create a lot of space, but the fibers were also more prone to stretching too much. A trainer at FC Copenhagen in Denmark noticed that many of those players who had the same high-twitch fibers never made it big, due to injuries early in their career. In a sense, it was probably really lucky that Owen got as far as he did.

  • @archerpool
    @archerpool Před 6 lety +1

    The downfall of Owen was that he thought he was too big for Liverpool. He thought he was better than Ronaldo and Raul. Then he joined a team without the players he needed to thrive. He needed a player who could slip the ball through to him perfectly and the Newcastle team wasn’t talented enough to do that. The major thing he missed was Heskey. If you’re a certain age you’ll remember how great Heskey and Owen were, but if you’re too young you’ll only know Heskey as a joke. Heskey drew defenders towards him. He’d take a beating and then would play a simple ball to Owen who’d have free space to run at the keeper. Everything Owen achieved was courtesy of Heskey. The moment he didn’t have Heskey he had to learn to take on defenders. He had to take challenges more regularly and his body wasn’t made for that. Owen didn’t peak to early, he got way too big for his boots and didn’t appreciate the work that the Liverpool team, particularly Heskey did for him.

    For me, it has to be Ronaldo Luis Nazario De Lima, Don't get me wrong, He is among the greatest players ever, but what Ronaldo did on a football pitch between the ages of 17 yrs to 22 yrs, no one else and I mean no one else can match it, that includes Cristiano or Messi.
    Poor lifestyle choices and knee injuries ruined his career, just imagine, what it could have been. He could have gone down as the greatest football player ever and it could not be even close. Think about it. Ronaldinho is close second on my least.

    A lot of players have 10 years at the top level, where they reach their ultimate performance. Players like Rooney, Owen, Fowler, Sharpe, Futre, Van Basten etc all had those ten years but started in their teens so by the time they are 26/27 their careers are on the decline due to wear and tear on their bodies.

    Who am I?
    3pts: I have played with these champions league winners but I have never won the competition myself. Fernando Torres, Andriy Shevchenko, Roque Junior, Lucio I am also retired
    2pts: I have played in only three euro leagues in my career Bundesliga league, Premier league and Russian league. But majority played in the Bundesliga
    1pts In my whole career I've never won a winners medal the closest I've come is second with dynamo Moscow in 2011-12 season and was top goal scorer in Bundesliga in the 2002-03 season
    Answer: Andriy Voronin
