    There's actually another trick it's got up its sleeve, though I haven't figured out what it's *for* necessarily. In the control bindings, in addition to Dive Mode, there's also a Glide Mode. At first, I thought that was just the name for the standard flight mode, but it's actually something different. As the name implies, it kind of turns the ornithopter into a glider by locking the wings in the extended position. I guess the idea is that it conserves fuel?

      @fabiena1787 Před 5 měsíci +14

      So clever, not so sure. In reality, insects can fly because of a very specific ratio between their mass and air viscosity. Some people have studied this phenomenon in length, and you will never see and aircraft size dragonfly, because of... physics. In the non scientific field, Stephen Dalton has made incredible books on high speed photography, showing how insects fly. And that was on film...

    • @RCmies

      @@fabiena1787 Dragonflies used to have a wingspan of almost a meter, so it's definitely not restricted to 'insect sized'. I'm not a big fan of saying something isn't possible because of one factor. Or even multiple factors. Of course, with todays technology it may not be easy, practical or sensible to make an ornithopter. If not designed perfectly it would probably break after a while. But with better materials and proper engineering and precise control of the wing movements something like this could be possible. Whether it's practical is another topic. But I could totally see someone making an RC controlled model of this that actually works.

Engineers have long been fascinated in the ways birds and insects fly because it far more efficient and agile than our aircraft but they've always had trouble replicating that efficiency and agility due to material and size constraints, it's not inconceivable at all that such a craft would be possible so far into the future, especially on a non-Earth planet

    I absolutely love this aircraft. It's definitely my current favourite and I expect it will be for some time. I actually only found out it was being added a little while ago when I was doing a search of add-on sites to see if anyone had tried building an ornithopter in Flight Sim - and there this was.
    I do wish it had at least a little in terms of navigation and autopilot, but I guess we have Butler to thank for their absence: "Thou shalt not make a machine in the likeness of a Human mind". I've also noticed a tendency for the thopter to move very slowly across the ground when it's landed, even with the engines off - though as best I can tell this seems to be a response to being put down on a slope: given a level surface it doesn't seem to do it.
    Still, hugely good fun, and promotional movie tie-in or not, I'm very glad it's included now. Though... I'm pretty sure it should be an anisopter because it's basically a dragonfly, but that's Dune's problem, not Flight Sim's. 😋😋

    Very surprised to find the flight model of this thing as interesting as it turned out to be, especially after the Pelican. I wish it had the instrumentation for at least basic VFR flight; I might actually fly it more than once in a blue moon. I appreciate having the silly or speculative on hand, but I'd like to have enough equipment to fly a cross country in a reasonable way.

    I was under the impression that dragonflies have 6dof thrust at their disposal,, this vehicle obviously has reverse and downward thrust (thus the upside down flight) ,, but is there a mode in the vehicle which allows you to simply "accel horizontal" rather than tilting and floating as in a heli, or "accel downward" rather than keeping aloft upside down? ?

    • @DoctorShocktor

      Yes, that is the insect functionality, but most ornithopters are simply fixed wing aircraft that use bird wing flapping for thrust, so it’s not a full insect emulation.
