Welcome to Idaho my friend. Couple words of advice from someone who grew up on Idaho whitewater. Keep that life jacket zipped up and secure. That cold water will suck the strength right out of you if you end up in the drink. Also, it's best to carry a throwable line in order to help rescue anyone who might end up in the water. Glad you guys had fun though.

As a kayaker I was thinking these boats make up for a lot! That waterspead would be a downstream only paddle for me, 0 chance any time it narrows going upstream, cool river to be fair you're lucky to live there! There was that one moment where he sent it into what was basically a waterfall off the back of a rock which was super sketchy (looked enough to force the bow under and fill the cabin), other than that it looked like the vessel had the bald eagles, one time he mistimed the waves but that wasnt too bad as he kept it straight enough.

Idaho is amazing. Went white water rafting for a full day trip down the south fork of the Payette River. I purposely planned early June to get high water from the caps. Had a double whammy because they had gotten a freak 14" snow storm the week earlier. Water was RAGING.
As we drove by the river in some spots, everyone in the car was excited and confident looking down at the hundreds of waves cresting and churning. Then we actually got on the water and those rolling white caps we "knew we could handle" were over the boat and at chest level to us, slamming into us and pushing us around...that was just the "get to the rapids" part and not even part of the "white water" experience. It was a stern reminder it was about to get serious and we needed to be on our game when the real rapids started haha.
It was an absolutely magical time, definitely more aggressive than what you just went through, but no doubt yours wasnt done justice by the camera. The water is no joke. We dumped everyone once on a huge hit we took up the gut at the end of the run. We never stood a chance lol. People fell out a few times outside of that. I really hope the south fork of the Payette is on your list. There was one spot we had to portage as it was pure death. Great stuff.
I've been to many states and many areas with mountains, camped multiple spots 10k+ ft in the rockies, etc. Idaho is just different. It's the most beautiful state in the lower 48, IMO.
Thanks for bringing back the memories and stay safe.

Nice, you guys are in my old stomping grounds! I worked out of White Bird as a white water guide on the Salmon back in '07. That put-in you used is just about a mile upstream from where I lived out of my van on the side of the river. Had a rattlesnake move in under my van, but we came to an understanding. Good times.
The Salmon is an awesome river for rafting, kayaking, and jet boats. Lots of big, fun rapids, mostly Class 2s & 3s. Enough to be a fun ride but not so much that you have to be a hardcore expert to even go on it. It changes a lot with the flow; at high flow like you guys experienced, there's a lot of big water, but at lower flows the challenges shifts more to rocks and drops. Even a week or two can make the river a completely different experience.
Beautiful country, lots of great camp sites, and the river cuts through a lot of interesting geology and history. Huge basalt columns from ancient lava flows, remnants of old hydraulic mining operations, and some cool Native American stuff. There are areas right off the river where you can check out old petroglyphs, and the area universities have (or at least had) a couple archeological dig sites along the river too. They were usually happy to give a nickel tour for anyone who wanted to stop.

Without a life vest, even a strong swimmer would be in trouble. This was only class 2 or 3 rapids. People's safety relies on having someone to pluck you from the water if you leave the boat. People naturally can float and swim, but it's panic that drowns people. "I thought I was going to die" is the proper response to help keep you alive.

Definitely good choice on changing the impeller on that jet boat pump. It’s not the tolerances that help hookup and power it’s the pitch of the impeller blades and having enough motor to drive that pitch to maintain rpm below the rev limiter. Riva directly across the state from you does some great impeller work for race skis and jet boats!
