  • Tired of you Fuel Shutoff Solenoid (FSS) failing on your 12 valve Cummins? Sick of spending the money on replacements or buying an expensive after market FSS?
Well, I was and decided to install a simple engine kill cable! The engine shut-off cable completely bypasses the unreliable FSS! Its cheap, easy, and works great! Never failed me once. The engine shut off cable is a very cool feature and a fun conversation topic! Its also works as an anti-theft if the person isn't too bright!
Enjoy the video, hope it helps you get an idea of how the engine shut off cable works.
You can mount it anywhere, I like the place I mounted it because it was simple and easy to reach.

If only somebody sold a kit with brackets that mounted up to the pump for this. After going through 2 new $80 solenoids and 2 new $100 relays i just rigged up a wire with a spring holding the shutoff open. Pull the wire, shuts off, release and start like normal. But glad I found this video. Gives me a better idea on how to do it properly instead of having a wire flopping all over the place

It's actually a pretty sought after truck, it was written up I'm a few diesel magazine calling it the "holy grail" 12 valve.. Keep that in mind if you ever go to sell it!
On a side note... The TPS on these trucks can be a total pain, I did a TPS delete from DNR customs, I think it was only $50.. By far best mod under $100 I've ever done! Your solenoid delete made me think of that!
    Cheers

Yeah my buddy has a 98 sport, he got me into 12 valves and he was always talking about his holy grail. I finally saw this one come up for a good price and pulled the trigger haha. Had to replace the tranny and rebuild the vacuum pump, but it was worth it for the price. I already replaced the TPS once also haha. Ill look into that TPS delete, I've heard of it before but haven't looked into it that much

I can vouch for the tps delete. Got mine for like $20 at genos garage. The original was giving me problems, not wanting to shift out of 3rd, lockup acting crazy etc. Installed it, tested it, shifted perfect. Only thing I can say is MOUNT THE KNOB. I thought I could get away with just zip-tying it under the dash after I set it and forget about it. But I kept having to mess with it every time I drove. Mounted the knob on the bottom of the dash, and haven't had a single issue since.

I like the cable he used. The mounting to the pump could use a different design imo. But if he’s happy with it who cares. My FSS works but am looking to swap to a cable for reliability purposes. I have a 5 speed and can push start it with dead or no battery’s if it’s cable driven

Looks like I'll be able to see things better once the FSS is removed. Once 18 years ago it wouldn't shut off and it turned out to be the contacts in the starter weren't working. At least that's what I was told. It shut off after cycling the ignition switch a few times. Anyways, after replacing the starter, never had another issue with it but I do like the idea that a manual shutoff will never let you down. That original starter is still supposed to be laying around here someplace and may just fix it and reinstall since my replacement starter seems to be dragging pretty bad.....that is if I can find it. :)

Where did you run the cable through the firewall?

There’s a rubber grommet that has a few wires going from the inside of the cab to the engine bay. I just used a knife to poke a hole to push the cable through

@@alexanderrosales7675 zip tie the damn shutoff lever open you won't be stranded. But it does suck having to replace them. Cable for the win

Yeah I've gone through 2 of those and 2 relays and you get to a point where you get tired of spending money on stuff that don't work. Rig up a manual shutoff, good to go
