Silver is an excellent conductor, better even than copper. Electricity and magnetism are closely associated so moving a magnet across a conductor (in this case the coin) will induce electric currents called eddy currents in the conductor. These currents produce magnetic fields of their own which will tend to oppose the motion of the moving magnet so creating the diamagnetic effect. It is the same principal that causes a magnet to descend slowly if you drop it down a copper pipe. Inn theory it ought to work with the pre-1860 copper coins, too , as copper is also an excellent conductor. Here endeth the physics lesson!
Some 1918KN pennies have 'crow's foot' error by the King's ear which makes for a bit of variety and something else to look out for (as if there weren't enough variations to look out for already!)
Thanks for the video, Paul - some nice coins on show!

Great Video, I’m not an expert but I think maybe the Roman coin at 12:44 could be a follis coin of Emperor Constans which would put it in the years 335-337AD.

search for slide test basically the same thing just hold the coin on an angle and drop a magnet down one side on silver it'll slide down slowly not a 100% accurate test as other metals can have a similair effect I usually do a ping test too but displacements probably the bet test

I would even say the prices for the 50% coins should be a bit higher due to the price of silver
Shame about the 1919 KN what a find that would have been!

You should look for the dot under magnification, it looked like it might be a very early die set for the dot. I thought I could see a very slight shadow where the dot would be.

Hi Ian, the silver threepence had become unpopular in England because of its small size, but it remained popular in Scotland. So silver threepences were produced as well as the brass ones from 1937-45 (and almost all the 1945 examples were subsequently melted down)
The silver ones and brass ones were demonitized in February 1971.

@@CoinPatrol Gosh,(born 1956) I got 3d pocket money and in 1966 it went up to 6d which, would buy a bar of Cadbury chocolate, I never saw a silver 3d in circulation or a farthing last minted on my birth year, Black Jacks were a 1/4d each but in my time were 4 for a 1d.
