      Sooooo true. I'm rereading IT right now and I can't believe that I like it so much as a teen, because it's repetitive as hell, same proceedings over and over with every character, endless minutia... The horror elements are so all over the place that it turns out goofy and childish, all the characters are archetypical with no dimension. It's weird to me that King is being in the conversation as a great writer like he was Faulkner or sum. Ridiculous. You can't even use his novels to kill time

    His grounded stories are so much better than fantastical. Regardless i agree he will spend two pages telling about what a diner waitress who dreamt of being a dancer, what lipstick she wears, her favourite song on the jukebox and when she takes a smoke break; whereas his explanation of the fantastic he will just wrap up in two lines like’ oh yeah, the clown is now a space turtle and now its a big spider’.
    Never sticks the ending either just writes himself into a corner and uses a maguffin or deus ex machina to get out of it.

    He drags the books way too much in order to produce "long books"
    So much unnecessary descriptions and details. Almost the first 75% psrt of the books are boring and only the last 25% are actually worth reading.
    My experience with SK hasn't been very good. I really don't understand how people go crazy for him snd exaggerate too much like "I couldn't sleep" "i had nightmares" "my heart was pounding" "it was terrifying and so scary"

That's BS because his best work is in smaller format like short stories, novellas or shorter novels like Misery or Pet Sematary. Things like The Stand, IT or Under the Dome are total garbage

    I've read every all of Stephen King's books, including the Richard Bachman books and his latest novel Later. His new book Billy SUmmers releases next month, August 3 2021, and I will read that too.
    I love Stephen King but I agree, King can ramble on subjects you coudlnt care less about and are not really important to the main plot or storyline.
    BUT, then I read a book like 11/22/63 and it just totally blows me away and reminds me why I love Stephen King. In recent years, King's books seem to be hit and miss, I will openly admit that. His earlier stuff is way cooler

      @mescetacy Před 2 lety +3

      That's interesting. When I finished 11/22/63 my first thought was that it could have been trimmed 300 pages easy. Yet after The Stand I didn't really want any of it trimmed. Agree though that some of his recent stuff is a bit tired. I was really disappointed in how he re-hashed the ending of Misery in his recent book Finders Keepers. Elevation was hot garbage.

    King at his best is very good. He can be captivating, and you can fall into the story with no problem. King at his worst tends to drag on and on about some subject that’s not really that intrinsic to the story, but he keeps droning on about it, or there’s a character that makes you ask, “Why is this guy here? He adds nothing to the story, he’s apparently just there to be there.” Yes, I know you need backstory in writing, but it doesn’t need to be parsed down to microscopic bits.

  • @drewtheunspoken3988
    @drewtheunspoken3988 Před 2 lety +17

    King tends to write in a conversational tone where it's like he's speaking to you personally. He's definitely got "diarhea of the keyboard (as he puts it) and it's not for everyone. He is also more interested in the journey than the destination and has no problem meandering on his way there.
    Ultimately, King's writing is for people who enjoy hearing stories more than reading them, and those who aren't invested in the ending.

    • @WiseOwl_1408

      @mikewazowski145 I wasn't intending that to be literal. An ending is obviously necessary for any story, but it's always been one of King's weaknesses. Of course, a book's climax is difficult to pull off when compared to cinema. An example would be reading about a lightsaber duel as opposed to seeing it.
      The Dark Tower series is definitely a case where, if the destination is as important as the journey, then you're probably going to find the whole thing unsatisfying.

(it was quite a lot of yellow) i remember the remaining series by D.J. Molles being essentially better in every regard to The Stand while being just as fucked up and obscene at times. Also, every character is assigned some ''unique'' voice, and they are gratingly folksy. I so want to like him. I really do. I read him in high school and then read Salem's Lot in early college. At the time, I enjoyed the story. What I would suggest to King is that he draws up plots and let a better writer do the actual lifting.

    Stephen king style of writing a book I can’t stand, it very cliche and it like he doing it for the money and so on. I prefer those authors that have a small amount of book they really worked on for a while not just a bunch of cliche bs he put in every book
