The smiley face at the end is supposed to be a callback to the Toddler Assessment video, aka basically just confirming that Adam was the child watching the assessment
it's either that or a reference to that old "you are an idiot" virus
I don't think that was Adam being "activated" or anything, that felt like his genuine reaction to finding out he's an alternate, and realizing that he was most likely the one who killed his mother. If you look at that scene, Adam is clearly sitting on the floor, as if he were contemplating his entire life, his hoodie sits on the bed for him to get a better look at himself to now notice the details. And lastly, he had scrolled through his radio till he found that audio about the "Fate of the Jester", seeing himself as that fool. And by the time Thatcher finds him, Adam has a breakdown.
There's also a bottle of bleach that Thatcher focuses on briefly with his light, which implies that Adam tried to unalive himself by drinking it. It would also add to the fact that he's screaming like that: both in anguish and agony.

A noteworthy detail is that the room Adam is in, is Thatcher’s room from volume 4 which means that Thatcher didn’t go to Adam but instead Thatcher found Adam in his room 35:38

I was really surprised by your reaction to the “Who is that? ADAM WHO IS THAT??” line as comedic. Honestly for me when I first heard it (and indeed still do), the intensity of the delivery of the line just really hit me as visceral fear. I really do think it’s some of the best voice acting in this series, so major props to the actress there

I want to draw attention to the bleach bottle on the floor of Adam’s room because it could show how Adam drank bleach in order to test what he had become and what he can do. It’s also equally possible that the alternate we see with Evelyn is Adam himself, but in his alternate form, which is what he wanted to show to Evelyn.
I'm with you on the Evelin part, but I think the bleach bottle was not consumed out of curiosity, but rather fear. For any number of reasons: perhaps Adam finally contracted MAD syndrome after the truth behind alternates was revealed to him once he turned into one. Perhaps he realised what he had become and the implications of how all of his memories were false and how the target of his mother's revenge which he has been trying to carry out, was him all along. Perhaps he was terrified of what he had become and what would happen to him in the future, and of his whole life crumbling and collapsing away because of it

@@scmontgomery If we consider alternates are formed by copying the identities of the babies kidnapped by the intruder, that are then re-released into society like Adam was, I believe either one of two things:
Either Adam is a special alternate who blended in so well with humans, he forgot what his true identity was.
Or that alternates blend into society perfectly like Adam does, and are like sleeper agents that are awoken by the same info that causes MAD syndrome in normal humans.

I think MatPat got it wrong here. I think the noteworthy thing about Gabriel speaking to Thatcher is that everything he says gets cut off or is partially obscured.
Gabriel is a deceiver who tells lies and tricks people. His power is in his words, and so I think the implication here is that he has less power over Thatcher for whatever reason. Thatcher can't hear him or isn't listening.

I interpreted it as: Gabriel mentioned that he is "his intuition" or something of that sort so I figured that the text in the background of the image was symbolic of the background of Thatcher's mind-- his subconscious. Because Gabe wanted him to see Adam and Thatcher unconsciously followed the plan laid out for him

Oh god. I feel so bad for adam. Can you imagine having that realization? Your entire perspective of life and understanding destroyed. The way his eyes glow and his face contorts as his mind seems to break. That's genuinely horrifying.
What if Adam is the Next generation of alternate? Not transmitted by analog signals but DIGITAL ones. The internet, social media, other technologies. It can even be argued that the death of the tech salesman was symbolic, with it symbolizing the change to digital horror.
I personally thought Gabriel/Devil is gonna take Adam's identity to trick humanity to fight against the intruder, as it seems the devil and intruder want two seperate things.

I was thinking that too. The series that gave Analogue Horror its name as a genre is Local 58, and the storyline from that series is about some kind of cult to an entity rejecting the transition from analogue to digital transmission. And this is a theme in a lot of analogue horror series - rejecting digital, wanting to remain in analogue transmission that can be intercepted by dangerous entities. You also have Vita Carnis where the meat creatures seem to be trying to destroy technology in general in honour of the Singularity (what controls them or created them).
And so much emphasis has been placed on how Mandela county is stuck in analogue transmission (old radios and TVs) despite the series taking place in the late 2000s when that had become pretty much obsolete. So in this series, where the entities in Local 58 couldn't overcome the change to digital transmission, the alternates in Mandela Catalogue seem to be developing that ability.

only thing i can think of in the ending with the smiley face is the “you are an idiot” thing from a while back. thing used to crash your computer and would ruin your device and delete everything essentially. probably goes back to the digital thing somehow but it’s a little funny thing if that was just thrown in for people who recognize it
it might actually be a callback to the Toddler Assessment Video (or something like that) a while back, hinting at the fact that maybe Adam really is, in fact, the crying child of the mother that (TW) hung herself in that vid.
the “you are an idiot” virus is all about mocking the person who downloaded it, like “wow I cant believe you actually fell for that shady download button”
kinda similar to the recurring theme in the mandela catalogue about people being easily fooled and manipulated. The alternate takeover is pretty much a mockery of humanity’s gullibility.
im also aware that im looking way too into it and alex definitely didn’t intend for that parallel to be drawn, but its still a really cool and interesting concept whether its a coincidence or not
Also, fun fact! 25:40 if you hear that beeeeeeeep like on TV or the movies after the steady beeps of a heart rate, it isn’t because the persons dead, it’s because someone has tripped over the wire and unplugged it by accident. Those thing set off ALARMS when they don’t detect a normal PQRS beat. I have a weirdly unique heart murmur (completely safe, doesn’t effect me) that sets them off all the time, great fun to have a nurse come sprinting in and just see my chilling with my kindle, looking very confused at the large machine beside me.
also in the audio you can hear squelchy noises it sounds like shes cutting into the body theres no bone sounds though so youd think if shes seeing his brain she had to cut his scull open so its all kinda weird

That last part of the video was legitimately disturbing. Mandela Catalogue is always good at nailing that disturbing under your skin factor.
The name “Mandela Catalyst” is very interesting.. it implies that the events in this part - specifically the parts with Adam at the end - were either the start of a big event that we haven’t seen, or it is the event that kickstarted the return of the alternates between volumes 1 and 2. Also, I think the “migrations” mentioned may have been alternates. If, during the time skip between the Mark Heathcliffe and BPS storylines, the alternates slowly migrated from Mandela, it would surely cause the people not just to slowly forget the alternates, but to resume their progress in technology. This would provide a reason for television and GPS technology to advance after the Mirror and Television Destruction Order. And if the people had slowly forgotten about alternates - due to the alternates’ activity fading into obscurity - it would make sense for the nurses to talk about not having heard about the alternates in a while.
That's basically the long and short of it, but it also fills in some missing details for events that occurred in both aswell
This is probably true, but also the migration probably refers to the exodus of Mandela counties population, and the alternates that followed them
one that really freaks me out is the chezzkids arg, maybe its the nostalgic feel mixed with the horror but imo its horrific
The conversation between Sarah and Evelin kinda seemed weird to me. The way she was responding to the messages, but also the way she was typing them out. It could just be my imagination but it just struck me as strange.

Heya MatPat, we have actually seen the Preacher as you spoken about at 41:42. They are the alternate that speaks to Adam in the basement in Volume 2, and is what is later used as an example of an "Overdriven" Alternate during the Interlude video about 8 months back.
It wasn't in the basement. It was just outside the door to the basement.

Something I noticed in high school in the 90's was how slang would organically spread through society. My younger sister's skater punk friends started calling things "sketch" and "sketchy" and within a year I started hearing it on TV. Same with "horruptious" and "gihugic".

I just want to take a moment to appreciate the time that Matt takes to entertain us
The tech aspect comes from MandelaTech2000. The video store run by Dave Lee. Dave was unwittingly doing O’Briens bidding by creating Face Studio 2 and making commercials for it to be seen online and on television. That’s why it’s so widespread because Dave made it. Gabriel even told him that he did everything he asked, and that he’s of no more use for him.
As for the smiley face at the end, that’s from the Toddler Stress Assessment video about children being exposed to unusual phenomena and how the react to it. Adam was known to not have any reactions to any of the material as a child when he was assessed, the doctor saying that he might be affect by the recent surge of M.A.D (but in actuality Adam was an alternate from the start and thus was not affected by M.A.D). That’s the reference for the smiley face.
I don't think babies can even get M.A.D because they're still too young to comprehend any complex thought.
i dont think it was referring to M.A.D when it said "the recent phenomena around children his age". especially because it specifies children, and M.A.D, from our understanding, happens to all ages (tho most likely adults)
Just going to point out that at the very first scene the time on the television is 4:37 which adds up to 14, then if you look at the date on the tv it says 1/14/09. The number 14 means deliverance or salvation, which is similar in meaning to catalyst. Also at 21:57 the time read on the screen is 7:24 and the cctv footage says TH13 . 724 is added up to 13. 13 is commonly associated as an "unlucky number" but more than that is connected to the devil/demons.
Even the amount of time this entire video lasts adds up to the number 14

We always had cherry bombs in four square, when you slammed it down and it bounced so high there was no hope the other person could get it. Whenever I got to king, I would always say no cherry bombs as my rule lol. Whenever someone did snake-eyes it was hilarious as long as it wasn't done to you, but the funniest thing to happen to new players. There were other names, but I can't remember them all. Wish i could play four square more often, easy one of my favorite games to play in school or at the pool. We would go to where the concrete slabs kinda seperated, and since they were all square it was perfect. Our pool made all kids under 18 get out for a 10 minute break every 15 minutes, so we would either buy snacks or play four square lol. Sometimes the ball would go flying into the pool and we would get the pool cleaner net to get it out if no one could go in. Those were good times

The weird thing for me is Adam's face at the end. Especially how his jaw seems to be kind of unhinged and hanging open at one point. It's reminding me of the 'intruder' seem in some of the earlier clips. (Not the TV version but preacher one.) And the part about the boy becoming a 'cog in the machine'. What if it's not the alternate that's changing Adam, but the intruder. Like the intruder is trying to turn him into both a puppet and a 'preacher'. Something that can spread its influence beyond TV screens.
20:00 Honestly that "who is that?!" line it's a great example of the "these pretzels are making me thirsty!" emphasis on words, except it's more like "these pretzels are making me hungry!"
It may not be necessarily wrong, but it definitely a weird choice of words and emphasis.
Its emphasized cuz “adam’s” voice just before said that he brought home a new friend. So of course she would say/emphasize “who” instead of “what” because she has been primed to believe this is a person and alternates do look like people.

My time in the Space Academy 1 (at the time I went, there was Space Camp which was basically for kids from elementary to early middle school, Space Academy 1 for late middle school, and Space Academy 2 for high school) had absolutely NO playing of Four Square. But was a lot of fun. Making and flying model rockets, the gyro chair, 2 missions on on a mockup of the ISS, and one on a shuttle, coupled with a history of the U.S. space program, and it's interactions with the space programs of other nations.... Would absolutely go again.
