  • Startup and running of my 1938 Fairbanks Morse model ZD 1.5hp engine. This is a throttle governed engine. This was one of its more stubborn starts.
This engine has now gone to be with a new owner.

i find it very difficult to start mine that way. and thats how it said to do it in the manual. so i dont even choke mine with my hand. and like you showed it takes quite a few cranks when you just pull up like your supposed to because the magneto has no impulse. so i sometimes put gasoline in a spray bottle and spray a little into the air intake before i crank it. and then i continuously crank until it fires. try priming the carb with a couple squirts of gas from a clean spraybottle.

Hi. Both my ZD’s are difficulties to start as well. Not sure if there flooding or something else. I threw away my crank handle and went to
a starter pull rope. A lot easier and quicker starting. I think
Maybe more Rpm’s with the pull rope and the capacitor charges up quicker.

was it over reving a little? it sounded a bit to fast to be 1500rpm? at least i dont recall mine running that fast. i guess it could be because mine has a big muffler that makes it sound a little deeper.
