The only 2 people I outright respected from DSMP were Technoblade and JSchlatt. Techno was in his own bubble and stayed out of all of the drama, while Schlatt was the only person who drew the line and told people not to cross it. I didn’t like the direction the SMP was taking with their scripted stories, and the chaotic tone the two brought to the server felt refreshing.

Yeah. I thought it got so popular because of tiktok during pandemic and was already a bit grumpy about it. Hearing it actually got so much hype because of DreamNotFound fanfiction, idk if I find it disturbing or just straight up hilarious lol
Oh man... that sucks so badly lol. One of my favourite songs was once apparently mentioned by one of these guys on the server and that was enough to totally flood the (formerly very quiet and thoughtful) comment sections with unhinged DSMP stans. (I was so confused at first, like why are there so many children here and what are they talking about?) But that was a relatively small thing and it passed quickly. But poor people who were fans of glass animal...

Dream really is just so terminally online that he can't stop stumbling his way into controversy after controversy. If he had made just *ONE* smart move and hired a PR/Social Media person that wouldn't let him post anything unless they vetted it first, almost none of this "drama" would have happened.
Online influencers were always just people. Most got swept up in fame very quickly, they never considered how popular they would get, and its not their fault. Dream never did anything particularly bad, and for a content creator to have to check every single tweet, and video, it would be hellish. He was just a guy who got a lot of hate. It's not his fault

I was the president and founder of my high school's art club, i distinctively remember a core memory of when one of the members shows me a drawing of Dream and George, and unfortunately it was one of the most talented, toe curling, sheets gripping piece of art i have ever seen. I still think about it till these days

OH MY GOD it was SUCH a relief to watch this video. It is so refreshing to hear from someone who was also a former Dream fan talk about this because 90% of videos about Dream are people hopping on the bandwagon and/or completely degrading and making fun of his character. I'm so happy that this video is NOT that and we've moved past that type of surface level edgy humor filled commentary that plagued late 2010's CZcams.
YES Dream is a loser!!! I cringe at all the old art I made of him during quarantine looking cool and badass with a giant diamond axe and big dumb green hoodie. I am ASHAMED to own two Dream hoodies and a GNF hoodie with the accompanied sticker sheets that came with every order, some of which still decorate my laptop, hydro flask, and bike. I still have an open Ao3 tab on my phone that filters for "hurt/comfort" and "angst" fics containing DreamNotFound.
After Dream's face reveal I became a complete hater. I relished in his downfall like many others and initially gave his apology video a pass because I was convinced he wasn't worth redeeming. But eventually I realized I was only basing my opinions on what other people said, and decided to watch the video hoping for things to be cleared up. Even then it was so hard to form my own opinion since everyone was telling me that Dream was still a creep/pedo/abuser/manipulator no matter what. So, I just left! I got into other media and swore to never engage in this stuff again. To look back and cringe at my idolization of literally some dude in his 20's on the internet who played minecraft for a living. It's really easy to say in retrospect, but all those events really weren't as life and death as my 17-19 year old self thought they were. But it sure was messy.
Didn't mean to go into my personal life story, but I just wanted to genuinely express how much I enjoyed this video from someone who was in the same boat. It's like I have someone to look back and laugh together with, instead of getting laughed AT by someone who never engaged in the Dream SMP fandom. It's like an in and out group if that makes any sense. I love that we can come together and collectively cringe at our old interests with a sort of fondness that you can't get anywhere else.
Lastly; fucking love the references you make, sorry you had to do that fanfic reading, keep up the great work and CONGRATS WITH THIS VIDEO'S POPULARITY!!! YOU DESERVE IT

Well, there wasn't any. The dsmp was huge and then it ended and Dream stopped uploading. He also had a grooming allegation he took a FUCKING YEAR to officially address and debunk, and he has his friendgroup split in half and many of them say he treated them like shit. So he lost his fandom due to all that. But there were no consequences for "baiting" his audience (can't really call it baiting when he was very upfront about the fact it was a joke and it was a very one sided joke 95% of the time). Like, fuck all.

Tbh the title of this video is pretty misleading.. idgaf about the details of a dream fan fiction, i think straight women’s obsession with gay men’s relationships is really voyeuristic and creepy, and I hoped you would have talked more about that instead, and how the performative nature of their relationship lead to them losing popularity. These kinda ships are very common, for example, one direction and the show supernatural. No hate, you made a really good video that I understand you put a lot of time into I just wish you had called it “the history of dream and George” or something

No actually thats what i thought too, thats the only reason i clicked tbh, i thought it would explore the rise of Dreamnotfound and the consequences of queerbaiting with some sort of backlash toward Dream and George considering how bad their fandoms can get.
Legit sat through the whole Heatwaves section waiting for some sort of buildup to the consequences but when Quinn said theyd be exploring 3 other fanfics i gave up.
I dont even like Dream, ive never been a fan nor a watcher, i just wanted some sort of analytic video to watch while i drew.

Its genuinely infuriating how these genuinely great writers would never have found success if they had simply swapped Dream's name for literally any other name. I seriously think that most fan fic writers would love to write their own OCs but its just not worth the effort. After all, why put the time in on something that is doomed to fail if you can just name the main characters after people the audience is already familiar with.

This ship has 100% made heat waves popular. I remember driving one day and I sent a photo to my friend saying "omg the radio just played heat waves!" I remember watching a video when heat waves started to become popular about how it was played a school event and someone screamed you melt me when it played. Tbh, I didn't mind the ship, infact, I find it hilarious as someone who used to watch a lot of og minecraft roleplays back in the day. Some of those dnf fanfic are crazy. I read the fanfiction "Uninvited" all in one day because it was just genuinely good.
The ship is indeed hilarious, and I'm actually angry how good some of these are because I don't want to admit that I can actually like a thing related to this ship.

I was kind of worried to watch this vid cause I was expecting either a dedicated hater who was going to trash the whole fandom or a toxic ex fan saying they gaybaited their whole relationship. Not in my wildest ideas that this would be a genuinely thoughtful video with a fair and funny perspective on the whole thing. That doesn't demonize all involved but also doesn't let go of the weirdness and insane or genuinely bad parts of the whole thing. That has same brand of mental illness as me. Then I hear Chazington reading and saw the fnaf video recommendations and it all clicked into place.
I almost couldn't finish the video with the amount of cringe circulating through me but this is great.

I never expected that a condensed reading of Heatwaves from a video about dreamnotfound, that was made years after my Dream and dsmp hyperfixation went away, would lead to my gay feelings for my closest friend, that I have repressed for months, to finally resurface so strongly that I literally cannot just sit with those feelings anymore, leaving me with no other choice but to actually work through them, yet here we are.

I really appreciate that you don’t seem to imply all people in fandom that ship characters are like these people. Contrary to popular belief, most people in fanfic circles think shipping real people is weird and creepy and we don’t want to be associated with these people.
For real, I think I've only ever shipped fictional people together because shipping real people together is weird asf
I could not imagine reading a fanfic about real people without feeling weird / uncomfortable
With a fictional character, it's possible to know exactly what they're thinking and feeling at any given moment, so it's much more maleable to write them into a fanfic scenario. With a real person, you can never truly know. That creates dissonance almost immediately, because the will of the writer and the will of the real person openly clash.

dude i remember reading heatwaves and never being able to finish it because i knew little to no english and there were no spanish translations, so i was forced to copy and paste every paragraph into google translate and even then i didn't understand it because google translate sucks and kept twisting everything into incomprehensible sentences.
i got to the middle of the FINAL chapter and gave up, and it wasn't until right now that i discovered how it ended or what a 'moon jelly' was
