1962 Chrysler Newport Extraction and Cleaning after decades!

- Richard, a follower of Obsolete Automotive contacted me and asked if I could use his '62 Chrysler as a parts car if nothing else. He wanted the car to be of some use instead of continuously sitting. It's already been dormant since the 1990s and had been neglected. I was told I could have the car as long as I could get it out of his father in law's property.
In this video I deliver my recently sold 1962 Plymouth Belvedere in Wise, Virginia to its new owners Milton and Garrett, who are also followers of Obsolete Automotive and then head to Sevierville, Tennessee to pick up the 1962 Chrysler in one trip. I didn't know what to expect in retrieving the car but soon found out it wasn't going to necessarily be easy. See how I get this car out and loaded up!
Once home it's time to clean of years of grime from neglect and then go through the car and take an assessment of it. Will I just use the car for parts, or will I bring this car back to life???

That Plymouth is such a pretty car. Those guys are gonna enjoy it for years to come. Thanks for keeping beauties like this on the road for folks to enjoy 👍
She needs a lot of help. A neat year for Chrysler with slanted quad head lights. Is a good looking car. Hope you get her runnin and fix her up!
You dropped the Plymouth off near where i grew up. I haven't been there in over twenty years. I do miss the scenery there and driving up and down that particular road.
The little squiggles in the grime on the vehicle body are likely snail or slug tracks from them munching on bio layer of grime. A guess anyhow, I've plucked a few vehicles out of forests, and found snails hanging around. Some were on the side of a 69 Merc Marquis 4-door hardtop brougham I found. It was an awesome cruiser once I cleaned it up, gave it rebuilt heads on the 429, 4 barrel intake, and a new Holley out of the box. It ran great. Got 12mpg on it's best day. I loved that boat.
Aside from the rot, it appears to be all there. Not all bashed up, glass is good and the doors open close really well. I think its def worth fixing the floors and mechanicals. You dont find those front ends any more.
Nice job backing down that gravel driveway😮that was not easy 😕
Hi Austin. I love your videos and I think I've watched them all. Hey, great save on this Chrysler! It has tons of excellent hard to find parts. A radio delete on a Chrysler? Wow, unique! The stainless trim is in fantastic shape. Get it running; sure, why not. A safe, reliable driver? Come on, now, buddy, The front seat is going to drop right into the ground when you drive it.😅P.S. Your son/daughter was SO well behaved during this adventure and man, your wife sure knows her way around an electric winch!. Until next time. My first car for my college commute was a 1965 Belvedere II convertible and I learned to drive on Mom's 1964 Dodge 4 door 2-seat base (330?) Mopar turquoise station wagon with the push button automatic, no power steering/brakes (it had a radio and heater and full wheel covers). I STILL can parallel park any vehicle 60 years later. 🤣
Well I would replace the floors before attempting to make it a driver. 😂
I just took a bong rip and started watching your video driving through the winding road? It made me so dizzy LOL thanks for the wonderful videos I always enjoy them guys love the road trips I'm an old Chrysler guy I had a nice 71 Plymouth scamp and also a 63 Chrysler 300 69 a100 turtle back they used to call it camper little camper with the 318 I haven't owned one for a while I sure miss honing an old Chrysler.
Looks like a nice project. Replacing the floors is considered pretty easy. Way too nice yo be a parts car.
Interesting, never seen a radio delete 62 before. No power brakes either. Definitely a good car to beat around in and the taillight chrome looks to be in one piece! It’ll be interesting to see what works on it (electroluminescent, engine/transmission, etc.)
back in the day, i wouldn't have looked twice at a 4door sedan, but now kinda diggin em...pretty much what everybody drove then, and nice to be able to take all the friends along...plus a lot of metal and glass...and this one's doors look great. yea a daily 62 newport would be great...the free engine gives one some hope that it will fire on its own again. I remember following a 61 Newport 4door sedan, bombing down the hiway at about 80...thought that was the coolest thing ever.
О ништяк, будет что посмотреть после работы!
Not much of a car and a lot of fuss and bother to get it home but the price was right. I will not be surprised to see it up and running in little to no time at all.
This WAS a very long video, but I enjoyed every minute of it. I just paused it and went and took a nap in the middle of it, so no problem.
Boy that Ram was "singing" going up the mountain. 🏁🏁🏁🏁
the '62 Plymouth is the last word in modernity. I hope the new owners enjoy the car.
For the first 12 years of my life - the 'family car' was a white with gray interior 1962 Chrysler Windsor sedan. [The Canadian version of the 'Newport'] I was brought home from the hospital in that car and cried when my dad traded it in on a gold 1968 Chrysler Newport sedan. I was never a big fan of that car. When I was about 6 - while my family was visiting - I sat in the Windsor and pretended to drive by pushing the transmission buttons. Somehow they got jammed [not sure how that happened! lol] and dad had to drive all the way home in 1st gear!
They can get jammed if you start trying to push buttons in at the same time or one of the buttons comes loose from the shift selector inside the dash!
That back up job is something I deal with all the time. One reason I want a rollback when my channel and car business gets to that point.
I wish. I don’t think I’ll ever have that kinda free money laying around. 😂
@ObsoleteAutomotive mine will definitely be something not very new lol. Friend got one for 5k though. Early 80s c70.
Snails eat the mold thats what causes the squiligy's ..Rubber ducky your the one you make bath time lots of fun..
I would at least get it running and go through the brakes. Drive it around the yard a bit and see how it is. Be careful of those tail light castings. Yours are still in good shape but they can easily be broken. If you proceed to metal work, maybe you can use the 880 as a template to fabricate the floors with the correct embossments and all that.
My parents bought a 62 Newport 4 door HT brand new. White with blue interior. It was equipped pretty much like this one, except ours also had a radio and clock. No power brakes. Power steering though. It's interesting how certain color interiors had a black dash pad no matter what. Ours had a matching blue pad. The red interiors had black pads. Looks like this one, with a grey interior, has a black pad too. I wonder why they did that.
How drunk WAS that mule that they were following when they laid out that road?!
You was close to home. I live on the letcher county perry county line in ky 30 mins from there in wise.
Dang, kinda looks like back roads of KY, SE KY at that. Yep, definitely looks like KY, and going up a winding mountain road, geez. But parts of Virginia, Tennessee, KY and w. Virginia, especially in the Appalachia region, all looks alike.
Whoever ordered this Chrysler was very frugal. No radio, no clock, no left side veiw mirror. The mirror location on this car is in the wrong spot. I'm guessing that power steering and brakes were optional on the 62 Newport. I'm not sure if this one is so equipped. The only options I see are automatic transmission and day/night mirror. Lots of weight reduction on this one as well. It's still worth saving for sure.
This car is equipped with power steering. Power steering was optional on the Newport but it seems that almost everyone one had power steering.
i had that happen with the studs on a '48 dodge im building. when i finally got them off i replaced them with .010" oversized splined studs!
Would like to see this car on the road, and the Astro dome come alive 🎉
Land o Goshen, what a mess, trying to get the trailer and that old Chrysler lined up!
Free is. Good. That. Road. Was. Twisty. To. Say. The. Least. ❤❤❤❤
I was a bit sad to see the '62 Plymouth sold and delivered. Somehow I still think I'll own another '62 like the '62 Dodge Dart 318 push button former Police car I had in HS back in 1967.
This one may be better as a parts car but it will be fun to see if it will run and drive !
Once water finds its way into a car it's often game over. A shame it was grossly neglected since it looks straight and could have been saved.
Far gone as it is the grill is really nice
The enforcers lil brother. 361 fire bolt.
Maybe slugs were living under that moulding making snail trails
IMHO. That car is not done for. Of course it will take some work but, not send one in a long time.
I40 between between ashville and newport really sucks.
On changing that tire you do know that that thing is a left handed screws on there so Lefty is tidy and righty is Lucy? And also the little squigglys is from snails crawling on your car they eat that stuff the more you know
Oh yes I’m very familiar with the left/right hand threads on these older MoPars. These were totally rusted out! And interesting on the snails.
I think the car is too far gone it's a parts car .
