  • The transistor was in invented in late 1947 at Bell Labs, and, driven by the military and rabid consumers of portable transistor radios, quickly displaced vacuum tubes in portable electronics. For the first time, music lovers could carry a device in their shirt pockets that would play for hours on a single battery. I remember seeing my first pocket solid-state radio, a generous gift from my dad’s business friend to me as a little kid, probably because he saw my fascination with electronics. It had twelve germanium transistors in it, and that was in the mid 60s, well after the advent of 1960 silicon transistor manufacturing. Maybe germaniums were cheaper? Germanium transistors certainly dominated music electronics throughout the sixties and into the 70s, yet two things can be said about silicon bipolar transistors with all certainty. One, making NPN versions of silicon transistors is and was much easier than making germanium NPNs. You can hardly find any germanium NPNs from the 50s and 60s, but silicon NPNs are plentiful (and work well in negative ground pedals). Two, silicon transistors have much better temperature stability than germanium ones, gain-wise. That means that the gain and sound remains about the same whether they’re hot or cold. Germanium transistors’ gains fluctuate wildly with temperature and that can really make their sound suffer in the sun or under hot lights, or in snow or intense air conditioning. At any rate, it’s interesting to note that classic Fuzz Face type pedals use two PNP germanium devices (positive ground) or in later years two NPN silicon (negative ground). Aside from limited edition reverse Fuzz Factory pedals, we’ve always used one silicon NPN preamp transistor and two germanium PNP fuzz transistors, up till now. Welcome to the all-silicon Fuzz Factory. A giant step into the future. Of the past. Edgier than ever. Stable (or predictably unstable) as hell.

    this thing can make so many different fuzz tones. it really is a fuzz factory. You can make almost any busted pedal noise you want. sonic youth would have killed for something like this in their time.

    The Fat Fuzz Factory was the best fuzz I've ever come across, actually turning me on to trying many other types of circuits .It was however, very heat sensitive, and seemed to work best with a camera($1 store) battery, - which made it impossible to rely on.( I've also had repeated issues with the mini toggle; just put it in the middle and leave it)
    Keep the FFF at home, for recording, and gig with the Silicon Vertical; hook it up to the voltage starve on the power supply, and adjust for best result.

    Please assist..! how do you keep the fuzz factory so quiet?
    i got a vexter one and its so noisey and its making me sad because its so damn awesome.
    Ive tried taking it somewhere else other than my home, switching cables, guitars, patches, power supply..
    Nothing works. and no.. i do not mean the weird noises its supposed to make.. but a terrible hum when its on. help!

      When you add certain controls and more pots to certain circuits, it commonly has a negative impact on the overall sound .With a well designed clipping circuit , the less knobs the better.
      Use the guitar and amp for tone control, or run it into an EQ or other compatible drive.

    You can clearly hear the difference between germanium and silicon transistors when you compare this version to the original.

      Jay Marasigan Usually silicon fuzzes are, you’ve tried this one with a wah?

    • @melting94
      @melting94 Před 4 lety

      I had the same issue with my non silicon fuzz factory and eventually put it before the wah with a buffer in between and it sounds much better. Still hard on the ears when you push the wah all the way down while it’s on though.

    • @markferguson3745
      @markferguson3745 Před rokem

      Maybe you need a different Wah.
      Teese/RMC , Wilson , and the Vox 846 HW and 847C are not only compatible, but can actually maximalize the range of sounds.
