    I love this channel. It's such a functionalist approach to vocals. As a rock vocalist, I really damaged my voice before I figured out how to get the sound of throat tearing force, without actually slapping my throat parts together in a destructive way. It permanently reduced my range and control. I wish I had a resource like this 15 years ago. Keep up the great work you're doing.

      This happened to me, and it sucked. It was like I forgot how to sing, and had to start over. My voice improved in my opinion after it though. Probably because afterwards I paid more attention to how I was singing. This channel helped me become a better rock vocalist as well.

    Just subscribed to your channel. Why? “Embrace the yell.” “Most people have never let their inhibitions go when it comes to their voice.” And you’re extremely brave for revealing something so intimate and personal as singing freely without hesitation. And the examples you use, Chris Cornell, Layne Staley etc, are not represented enough. Simply brilliant. Thank you!

    Hit the nail on the head, dude! I've been practicing singing in my room for 3 years almost and I just sang my heart out, and I've started to be able to control it. Just sing with all you have and don't think about what others might think. If it sounds good to you, good. You'll be able to feel your way through it. If your throat starts to hurt, then hold back and think about how you're singing. Other than that, sing with EVERYTHING you have.

I got scoped a few months back thinking I had nodes but the guy said it was just tension causing my pain. Refereed me to speech training, still waiting on it. It don't help I work in retail and have to talk all day.
    Weirdly I think if I sang and spoke with more passion/gusto/umph like this my throat would be in better condition - I often mumble B¬}

Neither in My Hero. I've been reflecting a lot and thinking, but can't make it. I get the point of these video - being energetic in singing - but will I ever be abel to get those songs right? I like most of your videos but this one has little practical advice unless you're coaching someone who is already a very good singer but lacks the ability to get wild. The only thing separating Dave Grohl from 99% of people watching is not just "confidence"... It's at least 30 years of already being a great singer. If it was as simple as letting go and being a rock n rolla then who would need you to teach them techniques? :P

    • @chrisliepe
      @chrisliepe  Před 3 lety

      I agree with you on this video. This isn't one of my typical "dissect the techniques of a singer" And I've done a ton of those since releasing this video. The point here really is that "letting go" is what most of these guys did to discover their vocal potential... not by studying formal voice training. But given the context and my other videos, I can see how this one feels a bit incomplete.

      @@chrisliepe Thank you for your response and your candour. What I like most about your teaching style is that you are not afraid to talk about psychological factors and imagery, which is a huge part of singing, maybe the biggest after a while. I just saw this and thought, damn a lot of kids are going to scream their head off in their bedroom and they need practical advice. Which of course you provide in other videos :) Keep up the good work man, I love it and I think you're really on to something here

    Confused. You say practice yelling-but that'll trash your voice as its cookie monster right ? Please clarify what you mean when you say yelling ..is it fry?

      It’s not so much about trying to get this sound, but about pulling the confidence and intensity from Dave’s singing. Get to these levels with those and then listen in anticipation for what unique qualities are showcased in your own voice. It won’t always initially be all that great but with practice, you’ll learn some great things about your voice and how it can really sound!

    yeah, but a lot of those rock singers lost their voices overtime.

    • @chrisliepe
      @chrisliepe  Před 3 lety

      Ya, they have... but we don't have to if we use the right techniques, hone in on the right sensations, and practice vocal budgeting! We can learn from them if we don't set out to merely imitate them! Study... pull inspiration... learn good technique... GO :) Check out this video: czcams.com/video/fTwDMrEfYr0/video.html

    I will not listen to anyone talking about rock music who is wearing a Coheed and Cambria shirt.
