  • A Viking ship was just found in Norway. It has been named the Jellstad Ship. This is a significant Viking Age archaeological find, the fourth Viking ship found in Norway that seems to be relatively intact.

      We don't know yet, but I think the longhouses will be pretty much gone, but the ground structure and the metal items will hopefully be intact.

    Just think of the amount of ship burials that "haven't" been found yet in Norway. With a mound of that size, the ship must be immense! Very exciting!

    Amazing! I always feel weird about this kind of thing though, if you excavate it I'd make sure to put whatever is in there back after they've taken pictures. Especially bodies. This is someone's grave after all.

    When you are next in Scotland, visit Swordle Bay - recently discovered a Viking Ship burial of a very high-status Viking! It's a special place with a lot of energy - you can feel it when you're there :)

    This video made me think of the project going on in my area. Have you heard of the "Hardraade Vikingship Association"? They're building a ship to be used in the local fjord and rivers; built in the traditional way using traditional materials!

      Yes, the mound is bronze age, I believe, and from what I know at the moment, that means they lived just at the edge of that mound for centuries.

    I was so excited when i read this in the news as well, there was talk about a new Oseberg ship and all, but the excitement was lowered a little when i learned that it is only about 1 meter underground so most likely not much wood left. Still a very interesting find and no doubt it will give us new information about Viking life it was just blown up to much on the news sites i think.
    Thank you for keeping us informed, news like this can easily be swallowed up by “more important” news on what a politician said in a tweet. 😉

    That's extremely exciting news Bjørn, who knows what secrets are revealed and fascinating treasures discovered during the excavation. It might even lead to new insights that changes our whole understanding of Viking life.
