LaBrie sounds how Charlie did back in 1989, and Charlie sounds like he was at the top of his game like LaBrie was in 1992. Charlies voice has definitely aged much better than LaBrie's has, at least in the last 2 years. Wonderful performance by everyone though.

While I agree that they both have sort of a luminous yet temporary and sad presence cause we know how the movie ends, I just can't get around the logic of comparing the two. Not on the same playing field at all. And LOVE Kevin Moore and obviously Cliff, who got in a fair share of writing and truthfully probably only wrote when he wanted to -- just like he approached everything in his short life - always only doing what he wanted. Dominici is good, but his voice is limited for what DT needed, that's why they fired him (this is fact).
For those who say "I dont know why they hired LaBrie" , "they should fire LaBrie and hire Dominici": listen to 12:20, and you will see why they fired him.
Another fact: LaBrie used to be a fucking monster, but he got food poisoning in 1995 and his vocal strings were forever damaged. Listen to Live at the Marquee and you'll see what a beast he used to be...
He wanted to quit DT but the rest of the band told him to stay. So stop talking bulshit. If you can't stand JLB voice live, listen to the studio albums or listen to something else.

live at the marquee was dubbed over, but there were plenty of other performances showcasing performances almost on par with live at the marquee.
it should be noted that labrie's damaged vocals were probably not solely from his food poisoning. throughout the images and words tour, you could hear his voice progressively change. they were already damaged by the time he got food poisoning, and the food poisoning was just the icing on the cake.

I'm not a DT fan, but i really like this song, never been a fan of DT because i'm a singer and i can't like something i can't project myself in (as a singer i mean). The main issue with his voice for me is that he is always on mix voice, head voice and sometimes the uggly falsetto (head voice is a well done falsetto that resembles a woman full voice, and usually sounds like the mix voice, but in higher notes), he is good, but listen to anyone that sings as high as he does, like Steve Perry from Journey, Michael Kiske or Andre Matos, those guys have a good use of full voice before going into head voice, especially Perry, and this dude you guys in the comments calling "Dominici" sings most in full voice and mix voice, he doesn't usually access the belting head voice notes, that's why most of you says that Labrie has a higher range, but trust me, it's easier to get those high notes if you are a tenor, it's open for most of us, what is not easy at all, for ANY singer is to have a well done open full range voice, most of the singers don't get past B4 while singing (or B5, don't remember without any instrument close to me, lets assume it's 4 for this example), so the true high tenors like Andre Matos, and just a few other, can access a full voice past C5, and Matos can go past that to a E5, that i can also reach in exercices, but to hit that note in a song is another story... it's fucking hard and can damage our voices.
I guess Labrie is the voice of DT not just because of his abilities, but mostly because he is a good front man, and Dominic looks like a introvert, that's really awful for a band as big as DT.

LaBrie on the other hand naturally doesnt have a higher range tan Dominici, but he pushes over it by Force and we all hear that it doesnt sound good. Its pressing and his vowels get washed it into a squieking sound. So.... Id rather pick Dominici.

    • @SeverianoPaoli
      @SeverianoPaoli Před 8 lety +2

The reason why the Awake album would probably sound bad with Dominici is quite obvious: the music has been tailored upon Labrie's voice, so if he attempted to sing his lines it probably wouldn't work. If Dominici had stayed it would have been composed differently, in a way it would work for him. So I don't think your comparison stands.

      But why DT choice Rudess????
Rudess is the best all keyboardist DT.
Skill, sound n performance playing rudess is best.
Sherinian is drop out on phone by portnoy.... but he skill is easy n commercial.

This is cool, too bad Moore wasn't there, but its still awesome Labrie and Dominoes was an awesome duet. And to everybody stuck on Kevin Moore, get a life, its not as bad as the absence of Mike Portnoy

Besides Dominic sung with a more pleasant tone, after a short rest, during the solos, LaBrie came back in better shape than Dominic.

Sherinian in DT did nothing... I give that to you, but he is still a better COMPOSER than Rudess.

Like I said in my other comment, listen to Planet X if you think Sherinian is not a "great keyboardist in prog metal", because after listening Quantum, you'll think otherwise.

It's hard to believe how such great musicians can't hear how _awful_ that guy sings. The only explanation I can imagine is that he is a member of the mafia, they owe him money, or something like that.

nah Dream Theater was just a Berklee trio (when Derek was with them it was a quartet) that just happens to have a singer and a keyboardist. They are the same vain as Zeppelin was three session musicians with a singer. Nothing against LeBrie but I listen to DT for the music not the lyrics.
