    Manila is a city of contrasts, with some 21 million people in the metropolitan area, and about 5 million of them living in squatter's areas (slums).
    I have been living in Manila all summer long, and I wanted to make this video to show you a new side of Manila that you probably don't know exists.
    Making this video in Manila was a challenge, but it has been the most touching video I've made thus far.
    My idea was to bring food and school supplies to kids living in the San Andres Bukid Squatter's area of Manila - where 120,000 people live within 1 square kilometer and on less than $1USD per day.
    I welcome your thoughts, comments and feedback on my video in Manila.

    This is revisiting my life from the past.i used to live in the squatter area.everytime there was a typhoon,we have no recourse but to sleep sitting down with legs soaked in water ,head down on the mini dining table. We were packed like sardines.neighbors helped each other ,shared food or even lent clothes.we also borrowed and paid money among us neighbors,which is common in squatter areas.we also had to watch tv shows from neighbors windows,since their homes were already packed with co-neighbors ,as well.yes,i did live in san andres bukid,tondo,sta ana,sta cruz,binondo,pandacan,paco etc being a nomad.Thanks god,i have been living in the usa for almost three decades now ,with good paying job.

    Oh my god, this is so sad. But now that I think about it, the people didn’t seem unhappy. Everyone knows each other, and helps each other. There isn’t drama, or social media to hurt people. Maybe living there wouldn’t be that bad? Housing would be a problem, and so would food, and schooling. But push all of that aside, if you have a loving family, would it truly be that bad?

    Studying in Manila for five years, I think the people in San Andres are poor but very hardworking. There are also middle class people. They have these honest jobs as vendors, waiters, etc. But just minutes away from this area, Tondo, got a different story. I'd say you have to be careful in this depressed area since my foreigner friends got hit by someone here.

    Is Manila poor? I don't think so. The Philippines is bursting with the most valuable commodity in the world. More valuable than oil. And that is youth. When the median age of all the rich countries exceeds 50... the working people of the next century will be concentrated in countries like the Philippines..

(im 15 and I think for my future so that I wont struggle)

    San Andres Bukid is just adjacent to Makati city. So the area of San Andres near the border with Makati have renovated homes and newly built up apartments and Makati employees rent those areas. San Andres is full of contrast because the employees and the urban poor co habitate. Many also of the offsprings of the urban poor have had education and have improved their lives already. San Andres is not a dangerous place. It is actually a safe area. It is the working class who live there. I know this because my family rented an apartment there near the border with Makati and stayed there for 11 years before eventually going abroad. I am now based here in the US east coast. San Andres does not have slums, they are just not a well planned residential community so you see the houses are built without following specific building codes. You dont see houses made of cardboards. The mayor Atienza who was mayor for 3 terms live in that area.

      Von Gabe Maybe it's unseen if you find it alongside the roads, but if you could track into deeper side like beside rivers or railway track and in northern area where there's fisherman village next to Jakarta's Big ports you would probably see it. Btw Manila CBD looks more modern than us hahaha

      PissMenn Oww I Wish Philippines And Indonesia Poor People And Slum must Relocate Into A Better Place With A House. Just A Small House That is Made By The Government. :) Thank You! But I Think Jakarta CBD And Skyline Are Just The Same Like Manila! Btw Congrats On Your MRT Jakarta!

    • @PissMenn
      @PissMenn Před 6 lety

      Von Gabe Yes indeed, money could be the problem but what's more difficult for us is to advice people, explain them to relocate their houses and leave all their bad condition into a new and more well designed housing. As Indonesia is a democratic country, is not easy to do that. Because we can't easily forced people. Sometimes opposition would defend those people "rights" to counter the government. I think PH share the same problem like that. Anyway we're still working on it, goodluck to Manila and whole Philippines as well.
