    Back in 1984, a ten year old from uptown chicago, I was interested in stargazing… I found myself always “looking up” heightened by my fascination with the return of Halley’s despite the light pollution… I was reading college text on astronomy not really understanding what it was, but in the hopes that somewhere along the way, it would be reintroduced back to me… Then life happened… but with all that life had to throw my way, I never ceased “looking up”…
    Now almost 40yrs later, I saw one of your videos… INSTANTLY TOOK ME BACK TO MY 10 YEAR OLD SELF!! Thank you for believing in what you do and sharing your knowledge… you got my SUB… Thank you, and MILOS… ❤️😍❤️

    My question is how could we determine the density, atmosphere, size as well as the temperature and living environment of planets that are in the other star system

    • @DamonScotting
      @DamonScotting  Před 4 lety +3

      Hey, thank you, I appreciate it! 😁🙏
      We analyse the spectroscopy of other stars.
      From this, we can tell their composition as well as their temperature.
      By observing the period of an exoplanets orbit we can then calculate its distance from the star thanks to Kepler's third law (Period^Squared = Distance^Cubed).
      If we know how hot a star is and how far away the planet is, we can then make a fair assumption on the planets temperature.
      If we analyse the light from the star and the light from the star as it passes through the planets atmosphere we can subtract the two to determine what the spectroscopy of the planets atmosphere is and whether or not it contains the right levels of certain elements to support life.
      Like the planet orbits the star, the star also orbits the planet, just on a much smaller scale, by measuring this we can determine the mass of the planet and thus it's density (Density = Mass/Volume).
      Hope this helps! 😁
