  • Hi everyone. Today I'm going to compare between white cement and plaster of paris for my coaster project. Can i replace white cement with plaster of paris? Please watch the video.
[UPDATE] - I have tried several test on this plaster and it break even if the correct ratio. I tried to mix with cement and it ain't worked either. At the end I found out that the quality of this plaster is superb low quality (from the review). I have changed to another brand and it worked fine now.

The plaster is mixed differently with water and the mixture comes out of the mold as smooth as glass. The mixture is made by adding the powder to the water and mixing a little at a time until you get a thin mixture like liquid yogurt. You have to use the mixture immediately, because it hardens completely in 6-8 minutes... and it can already be removed from the mold... Drying completely to a white color takes longer and the object itself is very light...

2 parts pop 1 part water is the ratio powder into water little at a time till water cannot aborb anymore mix gently to a batter like consistansy then pour into mold it gets warm while curing once cold to touch its cured to take out of mold usaually around 3o mins... its not the pop that was at fault it was your mixing every packet of pop i have seen has these instructions

Spraying isopropyl alcohol on the top can help pop bubbles, also plaster takes longer to dry which is why it’s so cold to the touch and it will definitely break after just 24hrs. I would say about 3 days is a better base estimate for drying, but also the thicker the object the longer it takes.

I do not know in Europe or in America what kind of plaster they sell. But, in Kazakhstan we use "smart plaster". There are already special additives that make gypsum stronger. Nobody uses pure plaster. And gypsum with additives gains strength every day until all the moisture comes out of it. And you can pull it out of the mold after 30-60 minutes.

It looked to me like your plaster was to thick. My plaster dries hard in 24 hours, but gets much more solid as it cures longer. It gets very hard and sounds like glass when it's tapped. Perhaps make another and then see if it breaks after a week or two of really curing all the moisture out. Hope it works better for you. Yes, they will still be like glass. I used a hammer on some little animals that had bubbles. They chipped, but didn't break or shatter.

If you add the powders to the water and let them just soak down until the water will not accept anymore, let it sit and then stir they won't harden so fast. It's the stirring that activates the hardening. You can add glue to the PoP to help it from breaking. Nice comparison.

The fail for the Plaster of Paris was not the material...it was your technique. The mixing ratio looked incorrect. The handle cracked at the same point where you added more water to the mixture. Of course that spot was weaker and broke! Also, Plaster of Paris takes longer to cure.

hI, i'm not an expert but you have right. the ratio of water and cement you use def. have an impact in the cement final piece. Because if you put more water than the needed the strings of the cement will no be stronger enough. And the cure proccess will turn the piece much more stronger. But water in excess will def ruin your cement piece.

Try using 1 part water (first) then 3 parts plaster of paris. You always add plaster to water and not the other way round. If you do this, you'll have the same consistency as you had with the cement! Also, your tests failed because you used way too much plaster in the first place. I can't understand why you added all that colour only to mix it into an ugly muddy colour! Next time try giving it 2 or 3 light stirs and you'll get a marble effect

If plasrer is cold to the touch, it is not dry. It goes through a chemical process producing heat then it sets, but is at its strongest when thoroughly dry, I made clay casting moulds out of it and it is very strong. Keep in mind both have their uses, plaster is easier to carve, but weaker when dry, compared to cement. Cement is stronger, but will also break if subjected to trying to break it especially if thin. Not a good guide this one, does your family own a cement factory! 😂🤣😅Just my opinion.

You need to read the directions on POP. It hardened so fast because you didn't make it correctly

This is a horrible comparison. Fyi, for anyone watching this video; this is misinformation. The instructions for using PoP was obviously ignored and was mixed completely wrong. PoP (IF mixed correctly) does not brake as easy as it does in this video. Ever have a cast for a broken bone? Yeah, it's the exact same stuff. Always read instructions
