    Okay real talk? This video made me cry. I'm currently struggling with my life choices as I spent the last three years in community college, and suddenly cannot afford to go to university to finish my bachelors. No bank would give me a loan, and not even Uncle Sam gave me enough. So here I sit with the next three years of my life totally empty without a goal in mind and I've been freaking out. I've been told all my life I should go to college, and suddenly when I realize I can't I feel like a terrible person. I want to design and program videogames. It's what I wanted to do since I was 8. So as I sit here wringing this it tears, I can say this video really hit home for me, and it really does make me realize I don't need college... I just need determination to learn what I need on my own. Thank you.

      Dude. You got this. This message made me tear up a little bit. This is exactly why I made this video - I'm glad it helped you - there are so many ways to get into the video game industry - sure - college is one way - but I'm sure there are a million others. Hound people on social media that work in your field - find out where they hang out - what things they go to - go to those things and be sincere and flatter with your incredible interest in video games. im sure this college thing was a big bummer for you but I know you can find a way to make it work despite this road block - i've hit so many - and you just have to find another way.

      I wouldn't say you wasted three years if college, even when applying for an internship, job, apprenticeship or hosting an event it is a great one up that you have on the competition. I would say that having even a general associates shows that you are a dedicated person and that you are craving experience. Most companies or colleges are not always looking for a proper degree to fill in a position or class. If you can show them you have the experience it can pay off majorly because companies WANT TO PAY FOR YOUR COLLEGE or help pay, because it shows that you are interested in their work aspect and field.As well as when they do pay for you they know that they will get much more out of you being educated and using that work experience in the real world. Go to zip recruiter or your local community college board and look for Opportunites to get involved in events or other activities it helped me a lot. It has happened to several of my friends also, the computer science field is still growing and many companies and colleges are looking for people that are in your situation. In the end, college is not what guarantees the job its the experience and you can use that to your advantage. So don't give up hope yet!

      See you say that but those who give loans and scholarships would think they wouldn't make a profit out of all of those changes. Imagine how the universities think of the audacity of changing textbooks that are outdated by decades and establish new systems that would produce better results than there outdated system of infinite tests and homework worksheets that in the end just disappear from people's memories.

    • @jayglenn837
      @jayglenn837 Před 6 lety +2

      Those who give out scholarships would definitely make a profit out of changing the system. As for those giving out loans, it's possible they would too - a better system means more people would want to attend, which means more loans. As for these universities that you think are made of snobbish, stuck-up board members, that's absolutely not true. Most of the people that manage most of universities would welcome a chance to improve and get more students, but they need a big push in the right direction - they're too paralyzed by their own system. Many presidents and deans set out to make slow or small changes over their time, but they need to know that they can make big changes, too.

(I keep hearing conflicting reports about exactly where it's ranked in that regard, but it's consistently in the top five.)

      Yeah, a prime example of the college plan flaw. However, it's pretty much a requirement to do so if teaching is what you want to do. Have you considered alternative college approaches? Community colleges tend to be cheaper. You can also look into CLEP testing for college credits or going through an online school. I would recommend looking into a program called "Unbound" (preciously called "College Plus"). They can help you find the education you need at the least expensive price. Best wishes to you, mate.

    computer science is one of those fields were you dont REALLY have to go to college. Building a network is pretty important once you get into the real world (im assuming you havn't already... neither have I) I'm not sure how to explain networking but its pretty much the amount of people(primarily people in power) that you know. For example if you go to college for computer science and become friends with a guy. You then realize that this friend is the son of the owner of google. If you ever apply at google you should have an advantage over somebody who doesnt have any connections to the company. This is a pretty extreme example but i guess it gets the point across

    Education is utterly important, the way it is packaged and given to us in forms of HS and College is not. (sure if you're in medicine or law, it is)
    One shoe doesn't fit all and the same is for college, it isn't for everyone. The reason we're so entitled to 'go to college' as utterly essential is because it has been like that generations before us, the only path they knew was through college so they imposed that outdated mentality on us too, they were not living in the Internet era so clearly they demonise every other path because because they don't understand the opportunity this Internet thing bought (talking in general public mentality)
    In the end, all they teach is how to score good on tests and follow instructions (no matter if you remember the thing you read after or not). Your life isn't dependent on a piece of paper from a business (that's what colleges are), it depends on what you actually do in that time called lifetime.
    (rant over)

      @@linusmlgtips2123 Not true. At least not with a lot of jobs now. Jobs now require experience, not a degree. I've known people who became managers without going to college. They got to the top of their careers after dropping out and are making good money.
      You don't need a piece of paper that says "I spent like 4 years sitting in a classroom, answering stuff that is shoved to my head so yeah I know about this thing". Nowadays, I've heard so many people get out of college and end up not getting accepted into a job even though they're on the honor roll because they have absolutely no experience in the field.
      Sure, some courses offer experiences like culinary and medicine. You definitely need that. But there are courses like Journalism or Education or Business or, heck, even Art and Design. If you spend years in college and have nothing to show for other than a piece of paper, it's not gonna be enough.
      Really. Nowadays, you don't need that. You can get it (in cases like being a doctor or a lawyer, you HAVE to get it) but I'd rather not waste 4 years of my life on something that I can learn through a more experienced individual online or otherwise. Going to college isn't the only route to having money anymore. You just gotta love what you do and stick with it even if it's hard.

    • @Levi-ug1fb
      @Levi-ug1fb Před 5 lety +1

      Chaitanya Singh The reason why you go to college really shouldn’t be to learn anything, because you can learn practically anything with other resources (ie the internet) but the reason should be is that when you apply for practically any job, having a degree in some sort of related field, or having a degree at all will give you a massive leg up. The higher of an education you get, statistically you will make a significant amount more than you would if you just went to high school. In general, going to college or something similar is very useful if you are getting a job in the workforce. The reason why Alex had such a hard time is because he got a degree, but instead of using it and getting a higher paying job in the workforce which is what they are supposed to be used for, he became a CZcamsr. This isn’t a bad thing, just the problem is, is that he spent all that time and money on college for nothing. That’s why in his mind college is useless.

    • @Levi-ug1fb
      @Levi-ug1fb Před 5 lety

      officaldaelight Honestly it really depends on the career. Some jobs require experience in the field and the degree doesn’t matter as much and is just a basic minimal plus one, like Video Game Programming, where companies mainly want lots of experience and a portfolio of games you made. On the other hand if you want to be a doctor or a lawyer (very easy examples, doesn’t need to be a high end job, there are others), you need to go to college because they want to see that you learned the materials and the skills needed. Also that 4 years of your life in college shows that you have the dedication, determination and drive to be able to accomplish the feat of getting your degree after years of college, because it’s no easy task. Many people don’t realize that their career is either more degree oriented or experience oriented, and spend time and money in the wrong one and have it not be nearly as valuable. In summary, degrees can be extremely useful in many cases, and are worth much more than credited.

    I just want to say this video needs to be seen by every young person. I went to engineering school and was fortunate enough to figure out after 1 year that it wasn’t what I wanted or needed. After accumulating $20,000 in debt for one year I came back home for community college, that didn’t deliver what I needed as far as knowledge, and I ended up starting my own business and it’s been pretty successful. Student debts were paid off and things are going well. College isn’t the only choice and I really wish young people would stop having that rhetoric rammed down their throats. I was fed it and bought it but luckily, I was able to see it wasn’t worth the expense before I was eye ball deep. Keep up the good work!

    *My first review comment about bro Alex's videos.*
    *About this video:* I love your honesty and uniqueness. You can make something ordinary into a joke (for many countries...I think).
    *Criticics and suggestions:* In some moments, can you talk about some issues or trends in CZcams, worldwide, or something, but with your honesty (for example, if you're in 2017, you can talk about PPAP dance, or something like that)?* I think that's a good chance if you can change it into animation and joke.
    *I hope this comment useful + comment me if there're something wrong with this comment. Thank you & GBU.*

    This video made me think about a lot. I will be entering my last year of High School. And i thought about college alot when i was in high school because teachers and parents always tell kids to go to college etc. And you brought up a great point about not going to college because you wanna be a youtuber. since i was young i love entertaining people and motivating others and love editing. And i slowly found youtube. And i been working to blow my youtube up. my decision of going to college was depending on youtube. depending if i blow up or not. trust i learn so many things well doing youtube. i learn so many things by myself. CZcams is a big key because, even though i loving making people laugh, or even pushing people im a shy kid. but its something about turning the camera on that just let all of the shyness go away. anyway college is really not in my mind. the reason why i still think about it , its because of my parents but i work hard on CZcams and im going to continue to do so. 1 year left of HS and we see were everything goes. Thanks man. i just found your channel btw

      Because the value of a college degree would decrease if everyone could have one. It's kinda like a high school diploma. It's free to get as long as you pass high school, but because almost everyone has one, it doesn't mean anything if all you have is a high school education. The price is super expensive, but the reason why is debated so it's difficult to say why.

  • @ChadTBurton
    @ChadTBurton Před 6 lety +2

    Not even joking, this video is so relatable. I went to college, did the whole 4 years at a state university. Because my parents kept telling me to get a higher education and don’t take over the family business. I’ve racked up somewhere up to $80,000-$100,000 between student loans and credit card debt. And BARELY graduated and got my degree (it was a Bachelors in the arts for Criminal Justice, I wanted to work in the District Attorneys office.) I worked as an intern for them for a whole year and found out In the process that I would need a Masters Degree for them to hire me, and the actual job openings were cutthroat, I quit because it would cost me $120,000 grand for a 3 year program to get my masters in law. I gave up, and went back to work for my family. Honestly ever since I came back to work for my dad, I have never been so happy. I’m working a simple job in excavation with my dad and it’s been very rewarding. Honestly when it comes down to it, I’ve found in the last three years since I left the DAs office finding a job isn’t hard. Theres a billion TRADE jobs in all different fields that need workers and they pay fantastic rates and sometimes have full benefits. I just found in my experience when you go to college, you bust your butt to make it through for 4 years and get a piece of paper only for you to pay more money to get a specific job you want, where the job you want probably doesn’t exist, or you have to compete with multiple people for. And what’s worse is some of these jobs might not even have loyalty to you. You might work hard for a year or two, and then they fire you because a younger 22 year old would be more happy to take your job and take a pay decrease too. All I’m saying is there’s nothing wrong with living a simpler life. Take your time and figure out what works for you. Not what everyone expects of you. 👍🏻

    Great video, Alex... AND you have a valid point. It's still viable to go out in the world and "get after it" yourself... College is a wonderful thing, but finances don't always work out so easily to take the "traditional student" path.
    You DID (however) leave out the "NON traditional student paths" (but we won't bust your balls about it...
    Part time college courses... (work through even a single course at a time... your pace)
    Challenging college courses (I know a guy who'd never have gotten the degree without this)
    Online courses... (should be researched BEFORE paid for or subscribed..)
    The only thing I will say here, is the online studies options are out there, and you will just want to KNOW what you're getting into before you pay up and join anything. Some don't get you the credits for your studies... so it's easy to get "pitfalled" into a place where you might challenge a course in an "accredited school" but it might be just enough over your study course for you to waste more money than if you'd just gone to school the first time around... It's worth being careful. That's all... SO BE F***ING CAREFUL! (lolz) ;o)

    My parents basically made me go to college and I didn’t need it with my career. And now I’m in debt. Also have sudden medical issues that I can’t even pursue that job I studied in college. I probably shouldn’t have gone.

    I do plan on going BACK to college. I'm 24 at a dead end job as a sales associate at Wal-Mart and I've gone job to job never making more than 11$ an hour and never getting raises. Each of these jobs I've worked at for more than 2 years by the way. And I've just had enough of not being where I want to be at this time in life. I'm almost 25 and I just want to get my stuff all together so my next step is going back to college. And I know what I want to do and I know I require a masters in Software Engineering to get it.

    I would recommend no classrooms!!! Just find a institution that focus on your career and gives you a hands on experience with actual workers in your field. 👌🏻traditional college is more for doctors, nurses, or lawyers.

    Finished my college orientation today. I think college will be for me and I'm happy to be a Michigan State University freshman

    Sad thing. I live really close to Fargo and my birthday was the day of the show and my mom said we couldn’t go. But I still had a good summer. Still I literally cried. That’s how bad I wanted to go.

    This was the most greatest speech I've ever heard in history
    except two obstacles stand in my way

    Me: Alex, stop acting oblivious to the fact
    Alex: w-what are you talking about?
    (Grabs him by neck)
    Me: We all know your animation has smoother motion.

    Fun Fact: prior to the formation of the Department of Education in 1979 the American educational system was ranked 2nd best in the world as opposed to now when it's ranked 37th.

    I love this. I’m always getting judged because my dream is to become an animator. But I’ll forever continue to stay motivated until I get the last laugh.
