2018 Porsche 718 Cayman Test Drive Video Review

  • Over the last decade the Porsche Cayman has developed its own colt following apart from the 911. The 4th generation seeks to distinguish itself further with a new name, new motor, and more mid-engine attitude. The name 718 gives homage to the late 1950’s sports car that was equipped with a flat-four cylinder engine. The styling updates on the 718 Cayman are still in line with Porsche’s latest design language. Base price for the 2018 Porsche 718 Cayman is $55,300.
    Under the hood is a turbocharged 2.0 liter 4-cylinder engine that makes 300 horsepower and 280 lb-ft. of torque. The higher trim Cayman S gets a 2.5 liter engine which bumps the power up to 350 horsepower and 306 lb-ft. of torque. Transmission choices are a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed PDK automatic. Gone is the 6-cylinder engine. The cabin is characterized by high build quality and a premium aesthetic.

    Fantastic review! I appreciate your take on the new flat 4 engine. I'm sick to death of hearing every reviewer poop on it's sound in every review, but you went a different way and I approve. It is a new age and I do embrace it. I also appreciate a review of a base model car. You don't see a lot of those on the press circuit because the brands usually want to promote their most expensive options. The Cayman is the pinnacle among mid engine sports cars, in my opinion.

    • @101ktm
      @101ktm Před 4 lety +2

      D LG I agree. Times change. I think a lot of 6 cylinder Cayman owners are not happy that a turbo 4 banger is faster than their flat 6’s. So what do they do? They make dumb comments about 4 cylinders and a different exhaust note.

    In 2007, I bought the 987 with the 5-speed manual. I was my first sports car and I just liked the way it looked. Even after 10 years, I still find it immensely satisfying and fun to drive, but if I had it to do over, here is what I would do now:I would like more horsepower (should've gotten the S) and I should have opted for the 6-speed manual. As I am now a more experienced fan of sportscars, it seems like all I think and dream about now is 'more horsepower'...but, I still love that old basic Cayman and will never part with it!

    Minimal options keeps the price of test model under control. Pretty car for sure and a lot of those expensive options are rarely missed. That turbo four is powerful and offers great acceleration.

    Thanks for a review that doesn't harp on the switch to 4-cylinder engines, but instead focuses on the car's many high points. My only gripe with your vid is the comment about turbo lag under 2200 rpm. With a 7600 rpm redline who, realistically speaking, aggressively drives a car like this under 2200 rpm? It's a moot point, and a silly one to make.

  • @johnsimion2893
    @johnsimion2893 Před 6 lety +3

    I owned a 2008 Cayman for a little over four years. It was stripped like this one. It was certainly a pretty car and a nice drive -- but didn't even come close to living up to the pervasive hype. I didn't track mine, which meant that about 90% of its performance capability was just wasted. My car had LESS standard equipment than a cheap Hyundai: No automatic A/C. No steering wheel controls (WTF!). No more gauges than a Hyundai (in a sports car? WTF!). No blind-spot detection. No active cruise control. No LED or bi-xenon headlights. Piss-poor standard stereo (almost unlistenable) and nearly impossible to upgrade the stereo after-the-fact. Constant brake dust made it impossible to keep the wheels clean; wash the car and drive a block and the wheels are all dirty again (until I replaced all the pads with ceramic pads, a $300 item that my mechanic struggled with over the course of three visits before he got it right -- would have been nice to have ceramic pads as a factory option, but Porsche doesn't even offer it (only the $8000 ceramic brakes AND rotors). Also no better than "okay" for daily use. Little torque made it easy to stall at intersections with the manual, and when you back up in cold weather and make a sharp turn (as in backing out of a parking place), the car will make a sound exactly like a gunshot. The first time this happened, my wife and I both instinctively ducked, sure we were under fire. We found out later that in a sharp reverse turn, the car will simply pull the front tires sideways (!) until they eventually break loose and snap back like a gunshot. This is just a characteristic of the car, you can google it. This is apparently harmless, just unnerving, but certainly unworthy of a car supposedly of this caliber. Oh, and Caymans and Boxsters prior to 2009 had the dreaded IMS which occasionally grenades the engine - not covered by Porsche after the warranty period, either. So, would I recommend one? Sure, a post-2009 one, if you go to a track or live close to Tail of the Dragon. If you want to drive it like ordinary people do, prepare yourself for $20-30K in options to make the car livable for daily use and therefore competitive with a mere Hyundai. A Miata is better equipped and a more fun car for the way normal people drive and costs 1/3 as much. Now the flaming can begin.

      What a stupid comment. It's not hard to buy expensive things...your mindset is precisely why so many people are in debt in this country. A rational person buys what they like, saves their cash, and doesn't give a damn about impressing people who have no connection to them. You sound extremely insecure.
      Also, the Cayman is mid-engined whereas the 911 is rear-engined...the Cayman is arguably a better setup.

      @rossyannis3000 Před 5 lety

      The 981 series from '14 - '16 was the best NA flat 6 series mid engined Porsche. They have it all. Remember, the 3.4l 981 engine is the base 911, just hobbled by Porsche. Now, one can get the ecu remapped to 364hp, 420Nm, 0-100km 3.89sec..... very cost effective way to get a brilliant mid engined beast. The 718 4 pot turbo sounds like a fart machine or lawnmower. Fast, but sterile and seriously unheroic.

    Why exactly did they get rid of the 6-cylinder and replace it with a 4? Did they do a market survey and find a lot of owners and potential buyers were upset about having the extra 2 cylinders and thought the car would be improved with a turbo 4 with turbo lag? Seems to me that the car would be greatly improved with the 6 cylinder with even more power like in the GT4.

    • @dr.michaelrichardson8011
      @dr.michaelrichardson8011 Před 6 lety

      It was because of the new European emissions standards, wasn't it? You get more power, while maintaining similar, or slightly increasing gas mileage, and limiting any increase in emissions.

    • @maxpowers3732
      @maxpowers3732 Před 6 lety +1

      I'm shocked that the car companies and consumers would let the government decide what kind of engine to put into a low production sports car. Having fewer cylinders also ruins the sound and character of the car. It's amazing to me that a group of politicians can dictate how people all over the world can live their lives and what kind of car they can buy.

    • @dr.michaelrichardson8011
      @dr.michaelrichardson8011 Před 6 lety +1

      Politicians are elected officials (in many European countries). So, those who elect them generally should know what types of policies those elected officials are likely to propose. I think decreasing emissions is a worldwide focus of many countries, politicians, car companies, and consumers. I'm not sure where you are going with your statement.
