      Rich Lo Scotty does try and diagnose stuff, in this video he said he already tried cleaning the maf months ago and it didn't help. Could he have gone in with a multimeter and look at how much volts goes to and from the thing? Yes but he still fixed it, the only other thing that would effect a maf is a dirty air filter and I'm sure he already checked that.

    When i had the same symptoms for my car, where it took a bit to start. It turned out that my crankshaft was split into two. which would be one of the worse case scenarios. Reason for it was, driving high speeds with low oil according to my mechanic.

    Scotty, you're a man after my own heart. I have a 1990 Cressida and what you described is almost the same thing as what happened to me , only with one difference. I had a breach in the snorkel tube that caused hard starting but no stall out. The mixture was obviously lean and what I'm leading up to is that the snorkel tube along its length must be AIR TIGHT!!!!! Since parts are scarce, I decided to fill in the gap with duck seal and also duct tape!!! Problem solved!!!!! The breach occurred right at the throttle body!!!!

    Leaky fuel pressure regulator that's not holding pressure after shutdown will cause a slow start after sitting. Can usually leave the key on for a few sec can help before starting. A fast start relies on pressurized fuel at the injectors as soon as the key is turned. If it has to prime up it may stall.

    Be sure to check the fuel filter too, I often find those things are decades old and neglected even when shops have charged people for replacements on them they haven't actually done(VERY common in franchise shops where the filter is difficult to get to). I do the key 5x on off for 5 seconds prime and crank, if it fires right up then you know you have a fuel rail/filter/pump problem.

      ***** the problem is especially bad on some Saturn's when dropping the tank is necessary. A whole lot of those cars went to the dealer for service and they charge for the part and the labor but when you take it apart you find it's never been touched. GM was never proud of their Saturn brand and it is very apparent.

    • @techtron2376
      @techtron2376 Před 9 lety +1

      There is no need to drop the tank. Pull the trunk carpeting and look for some cover. Remove it and there is the fuel pump. What a waste of time dropping the tank.

    • @kg4boj
      @kg4boj Před 9 lety

      AP499D25 there is no cover on the 2005 Saturn vue, amongst other models you have to drop the tank to get at the fuel filter inside.

    Aussie here. I had a 1995 Holden Commodore with Buick derived 3800 V6 and it was probably this that caused the excessive turning over time, though not chronic like this Chev, so did nothing about it.When I had an LPG (Liquified Petroleum Gas -known as a propane system in the US) system fitted, it would fire up right away after that and I recall the the gas carb was fitted beyond the MAF inline along the intake pipe!!

    Definitely use the MAF cleaner... I had an 2008 MINI that threw that code at 90,000 miles and MAF sensors for any car are freakishly expensive if you aren't expecting it. Bought a can that was on sale for $4, reset the computer, and it ran perfectly until I got rid of it at 190,000 miles.
    Plus.... if you hear someone needs a new MAF sensor, you can toss them the can, save them $80 to $200, and then they'll buy you dinner :p
    P.S. Don't use carb or brake cleaner... it leaves a permanent film on it and it's ruined forever, even if it's fairly new. Don't ask my dad how he found that fun fact out!

    • @MrNotorius5500
      @MrNotorius5500 Před 9 lety +1

      The Curious Noob You sure are right they are expensive as hell, and the kicker is they are nothing more than just simple heating elements which create resistance readings and change the voltage signal going to the PCM, surrounded by a plastic shield and a stainless steel mesh grid. Probably only $40 in materials tops but the manufacturer wants $400 for them.

    You are my goto guy, I had hard starting with 3.4l chevy and by your vids I came up with replacing the MAP sensor for $85 because simptoms matched the best. But still had to hold pedal down an inch to get started hot or cold with rich gas fumes/smoke when it finally started out the exaust pipe. So botom line it wasnt the problem, however evey othe car guy had a vid on the Fuel Pressure Regulator that matched my problem exact as when you removed the vacuum line to the Fuel Pressure Regulator gas would sputter out where the vacuume line was, mine sputterd the gas too, problem solved for the additional cost of $52 for the new Fuel Pressure Regulator. My 2002 Mustang GT had a bad diode in the alternator, which kept it from starting on the first try 90% of the time. It made the computer throw a code saying that the camshaft position sensor was bad, even though I replaced it. I bought a rebuilt alternator from a shop near me and replaced it, which solved the problem. Something to consider if you're having a similar problem.

      If you're talking old cars, well, carb fuel mixure adjustment and overall carb condition can cause a hard start as well as normal tune up issues. However, the biggest contributor to slow starts on old cars would be the dwell adjustment on the points inside the distributor cap. You can dial it in to run, but to have a quick start requires even more dialing in. GM excelled here as there was a little door in the side of the dist. cap which allowed an allen wrench to be used to "fine tune" the dwell (when using dwell meter) while the engine is running. On a Ford, you have to remove the cap and rotor, and keep trying to tune it in with a feeler gauge, and hoping you can get the best results on your dwell meter. A real PITA. So there is a small sample on an "old" car.

    The maf on my 3800 camaro had cracked at the sensor tip and it caused no start and no idle problems. I could get the car to start by giving a bit of pedal pressure and then starting it up. It would also idle if you held it at idle speed by pedal. I was able to drive it for a couple of days like that. Has a new maf now and runs perfect. How it cracked in the first place I have no idea.

    I have a 2002 Chevy Express van with a 5.0L. It developed a hard start problem where it wouldn't catch until the second or third turn of the key in the cold morning but would start on the first try all day long after that. So, I had a shop look for any codes and there were none (I now have a code reader) and to check the fuel pressure which turned out to be fine. I did clean the mass air flow sensor to no avail. I did change the air filter which was clogged with dirt but that didn't help. I even went as far as to have the battery checked (it showed 12.73 vdc) and was assured it was fine. On a whim, I changed the three year old two year battery and shazam, no more starting issues!

    Funny, I was about to make a video about my 97 Blazer with the same problem.
    When it's a cold start up, it'll start up with no problem. Once I turn off the car within a couple of seconds and 4 minutes or so, it'll start up again, no hesitating.
    However, once the car has been sitting between 15 minutes and 3-4 hours after driving, I have to hold down the switch for 3-4 seconds for it to start. Which is sometimes embarrassing. I should add that when it's cold outside, below 35 degree fahrenheit, I'll always get a check engine light about fuel/air mix ratio.
    Is that the cause of it not starting properly?

    I had a problem with hard starting on my 96 GMC C-3500 , 454 Vortec.
    It would start first thing in the morning , but for the rest of the day when I would park it and come back out a half hour later it would crank and crank then finally start , run good until the next time I parked it.
    Turns out it was leaking injectors , when I would shut it off , the residual drip of fuel from the bad injectors , would fill the manifold and make it too rich for the computer to signal a start , it would have to cycle the rich fuel vapor out of the manifold for it to finally start.
    Changed the injectors , starts first time every time , and runs so much better.

    Hey Scotty, I have a '07 Dodge Charger with a 3.5L engine. Ever since I've had it, the car would sometimes take longer than usual to start (roughly 4-5 seconds). I've had it for roughly 5 years now but I'm just so tired of dealing with the issue. No CEL has came on for it-no codes. The only thing that I feel may be tied into this problem is that when I'm at a stop, the engine would shudder a little with the RPM's slightly fluctuating but it doesn't happen as often. I keep up with the maintenance as best as I can. What I've replaced on the car since I'v had it: ALL oxygen sensors, BOTH catalytic converters, alternator, starter, PCV, spark plugs, air filter, water pump, battery, shocks and struts, and timing belt (I know some of things listed or irrelevant but I just wanted to show how serious I am about my car's upkeep :)). I was thinking it might be the camshaft sensor and/or crankshaft sensor but thought I'd ask for your thoughts. Thanks!

    When that messes up, the computer doesn't know when to apply fuel or spark, since it doesn't know where the pistons are. Started fine cold, but when hot, I had to pour water on it to cool it off. Replaced it and problem solved!
