The majority of background checks are only looking at criminal history and credit. Been doing this for 27 years since I got out of college (52). I have jobs that I worked out for a brief period of time and NEVER put on a resume. Keep in mind you have to job hop to get better paying jobs. Just saying.

Was talking to a chef today who bluffed his way into a sous-chef position. He has no professional training and learnt his way up on the job, primarily through his contacts and his interest in cooking. I'm a qualified multimedia designer who has been trying to get my foot in the door to a junior design position for a number of years. Seriously considering bluffing as I am not hearing back from any job applications. I cannot afford to gain experience working an internship for free, I have a family to support, rent to pay, the current system works against people like me. I would prefer to be honest, but this seems to be getting me nowhere.

Have you tried doing some "freelancing" work? Maybe some work for friends and family? If you're aiming for a JR designer role do you know html and css? Knowing those two will help you stand apart from other designers who don't. As far a bluffing or lying on your resume, try not to over do it but try to "stretch" the truth a little if you have to. I did a stream with Niall from Codu Community and we talked about doing what you need to do to get that first job. czcams.com/video/lTmt8MtkJB4/video.html

@@DorianDevelops thanks for your reply, I have studied CSS and HTML, to a lesser extent PHP and Javascript. I also have experience using 3DSMax and have worked as a freelance photographer. I have done some freelance design work for a friends company doing weekly advertisements for news print, facebook campaigns and video. I worked for a start up business for 3 months for a college placement, I thought this would be sufficient as experience. I just dont get how Junior Graphic design jobs ask for 1 or 2 years industry experience. The reason i was speaking to the chef was that I am seriously thinking switching career out of frustration. At 35 years old I cant afford to wait around much longer.

Contemporary Corporate America has created a situation where for the vast majority of people looking for entry-level work, being dishonest is required. How does someone get an entry level position when 99% of entry-level positions require two or more years of experience? Yes, I know some people say it's not a hard rule, it's a wish list, not a must-have list. But in my experience it is pretty much a hard rule. If you don't have that two years experience you tend to get instantly rejected. So it really is beyond belief that Corporate America might be complaining people lie on their resumes, or exaggerate, when it is because of them, and their ridiculous policies that makes it essential that people exaggerate and or lie. Moreover, it certainly would be nice if Corporate America stop lying just once in awhile. 95% of every job posting I see ends up having an endless stream of lies in it.
