Wow, a review of Shovel Knight that has actual criticism. Seriously, a majority of the reviews that I've seen was just "oh this game is perfect no flaws no flaws buy it", but you actually talked about the things that worked AS WELL as the things that didn't. Gilly the Kid, you have my respect, good sir!
The point you make about Shovel Knight's aesthetics not using the 8-bit design choice to deliver substandard visuals is important. A lot of the time these retro-style games lose a lot of what made sprite art so great because they're deliberately trying to look archaic and don't frame their art from the perspective of "sprite art trying to look as good as it can," which was the mindset of actual retro art-styles back in the day. Sprite art for sprite art's sake is a pitfall waiting to be fallen into, because retro games never wanted to look like sprite art--they wanted to take sprite art and push it to create a visual effect, the same way games these days try to push the medium by looking cinematic or stylized or whatever.
Yep Johnny has the right idea, who needs fresh air when you got video games!
In my opinion, a lot of the things you complained about help capture the feel of an NES game. At the same time though there are certain elements of old NES games that weren't in the game that would've only worsened the experience, like how Castlevania 2 being too cryptic.
Are shovel guitars a real thing? You need to go look up Rob Scallon lol
Jeez Gilly was a whiny baby in this one, those nitpicks made zero sense
HEY DON'T UNDERESTIMATE THE SHOVEL, my grandfather was killed by a shovel, almost like how my father was killed by a rake
ROUND 2 WHEN?
Did I miss something or did Johnny not give his overall opinion, leaving all of us unsure and confused?
8 enemies, blue protagonist, great music, female red partner. Guess it is like megaman

Shovel guitars.
Nice video, interesting how you incorporated casual questions and conversation into the script.

I love how you still use those Brawl-like introductions for your guest reviewers.
Yeah, Johnny needs to do a round 2 for this game
It just goes to show that having a bendy straw can make just about any character into one everybody loves. :P
