How Shovel Knight Was Made and Started as a Joke

  • This Shovel Knight documentary details the development of the indie video game Shovel Knight and goes behind the scenes of its creation. Discover how a handful of ex-WayForward developers started Yacht Club Games and wanted to make a game that adopted a simpler style of gameplay, much like the classic NES games from the eighties. The documentary also explores how the Kickstarter initially almost barely got funded but eventually blew up almost overnight and unlocked every single stretch goal.
It also details all the design decisions that the studio made throughout development and how the team had to break the limitations of the NES to make Shovel Knight work. Furthermore, it delves into how Yacht Club Games ran out of money a couple of months before development and how it affected the team. Lastly, the documentary takes a look at why the developers burned out after developing the first additional campaign and what they did to recover from it.

I think it's important to mention that, while the soundtrack does make use of the NES's five main voices or "sound channels", it also has three additional channels from the VRC6 expansion chip. This chip was exclusively used by Konami for two games on Japan only, since the international version of the NES didn't support it. The two official Famicom games this chip was used in make prominent use of it. Kaufman on the other hand, limited the VRC6's role to just background harmonies, effects and other embellishments, with all of the music's core (lead melody, bassline, percussion, etc.) being played by the stock 2A03 chip. This way, the game's music maintains the essence of classic 8-bit tunes, while still making them sound more like how you _remember_ NES music than how it actually was.
That aside, this is an excellent video! Super impressive research and editing, love how you incorporated the actual game's aesthetic into it.

While it is a masterpiece and amazing, i wouldn't call it the king of indies. That title belongs to super meat boy: leader in the indie scene, amazing game, tons of indie crossover characters, hard as hell, was made by edmund mcmillen (the lead, of course the other guy on team meat worked on it to)

Hey, @ThatGuyGlen! Could you consider making a video about Geometry Dash? I don't know much about the story behind it, but I think it was made and updated by a solo developer. Talking about how a simple platformer became viral, and how the in-game level editor allowed players to revolutionize GD and even make brand new games and animations out of it...you might have a very interesting video concept there.

Shovel Knight seems to be more TurboGrafix 16 visuals and NES sound. The color pallet and sprite size more represent 16-bit capabilities than 8-bit. Better than the Sega Master System but not quite on par with Super Nintendo.
