BACKGROUND
Countdown is the channel’s longest running show and the first show ever broadcast on Channel 4 when it launched 40 years ago, in November 1982. The original version of Channel 4's Countdown is the French television programme « Des chiffres et des lettres » (literally "numbers and letters"), where the Numbers Round is referred to as « Le compte est bon » ("the total is right"). The show debuted in 1965 as « Le mot le plus long » using letters only, and reached its present format in 1972. This year marks the shows 51st anniversary.

SPIN-OFF
"8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown" is hosted by Jimmy Carr, with Rachel Riley and Susie Dent assuming their Countdown roles. The formation of the crossover with "8 Out if 10 Cats" began as a series of specials, the first of which was broadcast on 2 January 2012, when Channel 4 orchestrated a special "mash-up night", merging two shows to form a special edition of the pair, as part of its 30th-anniversary celebrations eleven years ago.

700 was kind of straightforward on the first one:
6*8 + 2 = 50
3*5 - 1 = 14
50*14=700
Rachel's way to 699 I found absolutely mental if you're trying to get there in the 30 seconds
I got it the same way Rachel did. My thought process was 699 / 3 = 233. 8 x 6 x 5 = 240, with a 2 and 1 left over. Then it was (8 x 6 - 1) x 5 - 2 to get the 233 I needed, like Rachel showed.
The 539 felt quite straightforward; I'm surprised the contestants didn't get it. I did 7 - 4 = 3. 50 + 3 = 53. 6 + 4 = 10. 53 * 10 = 530. 530 + 9 = 539.
See, I was trying to find a way to get to 53 and multiply by 10 (I always try this when there's a 10 easily available, and a digit left over to get you straight there) but I missed it and got 540, like the contestants. Wouldn't have got Rachel's solution though, I don't learn times tables beyond 144 (12 x 12).
Viraj probably lost a lot of time due to the divisibility by 7 dead end. Divisibility checks are a solid solution strategy but they do occasionally fail.
I did exactly the same as was surprised aswell they didn't get it.
I did 50 × (4 + 7) + 4 - 6 - 9
@syntaxlost9239 there actually is a divisibility rule for 7; it's just not taught in schools because it's not terribly obvious.
I think it's safe to say never go for all small numbers.
For 207:
(3+4)*(9+1)=70
(70-1)*3=207
In the 539 round, I got 540 by
9+4=11*50=550 then 6+4=10 then take it off.
4:24 Oh no? More like oh yes, it's the two 1s again!
Also a terrible selection but at least the target is small...
Really nice solution from the champ though, he spotted it was a factor of 9.
539
4+7 = 11
11x50 = 550
6 + 9 - 4 = 11
550 - 11 = 539
207=9×(4×(3+3)-1)
883=(9+8)×(50+8/4)-1
539=(6+4)×(50+7-4)+9
539=(7+4)×(50+9-6-4)
Way out of time, but:
3 + 3 = 6
6 x 4 = 24
24 - 1 = 23
23 x 9 = 207 #
Rachel is a goddess!
