Yeah I feel like if anyone else had done that, no one would care. When we criticize people for something so innocuous, it distracts from the bad things they have actually done. If you never knew anything about her, and you heard about someone criticizing her for that, you’d think everyone against her was just being ridiculous. I am not defending her, but it’s pretty obvious that Basket Case is a reference to the song.

I have to comment on the "Selektion" lipstick shade: German is my mother tongue and I am from and live in Austria, so I'm more than familiar with the cultural connotations of this word. And I have to say, it's neither exclusively used for Nazi stuff nor is it mainly attributed to it. It's pretty much a standard word derived from Latin. If it's used without context most people's thoughts would probably move to the evolutionary process of selection described by Darwin. And depending on the context it can feel very uncomfortable to use because that's the argument the Nazis used to decide who can live and who should die. So I would say it is specifically the context of her alleged antisemitism and the use of German words in English that paints the shade name in a very bad light.

Exactly. I just want to add that there are many other brands using "finest selection" as a term. You can find it on choclate, dog / cat food etc. In combination with her other scandals she might have chosen the word intentionally - or she really did not know.
Also that she used the r-word for another shade... we can all see that she doesn't have the best intentions
I always thought it was weird that she was like "I can't be racist/antisemitic because I'm not white, I'm Latina" and like... yes, she was born in Mexico... but Katherine von Drachenberg was born in Mexico to parents from Argentina, more specifically a dad who is ethnically German and a mom whose heritage is almost entirely European. Being Latina doesn't bar you from being racist or antisemitic and being Latina also doesn't bar you from being white. She's a white lady. She's a white lady with a German dad from a country that very notoriously harbored nazi war criminals. I don't know if it's straight up cognitive dissonance preventing her from realizing this or she just thinks people would accept her excuses and pleas of ignorance... repeatedly.

There may be more to the Rafael Reyes swastika tattoo. In the center of the tattoo there appears to be a Jewish Star. I have a screen shot but don’t think it can be posted here. Anyway the notion that it’s a peace symbol (it was, but has been appropriated by Nazis) is out the window if that is indeed a Jewish Star in the center.

Or didn't research enough and just decided to drag another culture's religious symbol and say it should still be treated like a hate symbol (which always backfires for people of those cultures more than anyone). To be fair... Kat turned "villian" after she got a taste of fame on Miami Ink. She had a number of tattoo peers come to her defense back then, but then as time went on, everyone realized she wanted fame more than the friends who got her there. A few years ago I found out people know her now for make up or something...
Her makeup line used to be quite good tbh. It was in Sephora at one time. The company still exists but she no longer has any share in it. The main reason things went downhill for her in the makeup world is that she attacked her former friend Jeffree Star for no reason publicly, and he was able to easily prove he didn’t do the stuff she accused him of. That was what lead to people really scrutinizing her more than ever, and her response video about not being a nzi.
I don't trust her. There are patterns of behavior and associations. She hasn't learned anything and I think she lies a lot. I think people can change but I don't think she has based on her getting caught with her pants down over and over and over again

They're not the same symbol. The swastika is the buddhist manji symbol flipped around to face the opposite way. It's like saying the cross and the upside down cross are the same symbol. It's more so people being ignorant on the subject and mistakenly seeing manji and thinking it's a swastika.

That's not what canceled means. Canceled essentially an attempt to remove a person's platforms, and their access to a job or source of revenue. It can also include character assassination. Plenty of people of different income levels have been "canceled" to one degree or another. It's usually the rich ones who survive. Canceled is not a legal definition, and it doesn't come from a governing body. It doesn't force someone to apologize, and it doesn't guarantee they won't find income somewhere.

There are a lot of signs all throughout her life that point to her true nature. I'm open to accepting changes in people as they age, but she hasn't even tried to change or take true ownership of any misdeeds. 'Ignorance" is the rug all her issues are swept under and she intends to stay 'ignorant' of all her issues.

cancel culture didn’t cause kat to lose her company. she was the face & owner of the company, so when her behavior was offensive, that hurt the KVD brand. so after a consistent lack of accountability & her generalizing valid criticism as “hate”, she became a liability to KVD & quit by selling her share. Kat ruining her reputation & brand is literally her own fault, regardless if she’s now changed. those are the consequences you pay as a brand owner for doing shitty things that, for any decent human being, are extremely easy not to do.

The thing that creeped me out most was apparently a get together of Steve O and Kat getting really drunk. Their conversation turned into not wanting children and how annoying babies are. They both joked around, "F__k babies...yeah, f__k babies". To which lead to Steve O asking for a 'F babies' tattoo. I dont think the artist was Kat, but an employee at her shop, but the artist actually drew an adult male raping a baby. Steve O apparently didn't think anything about anything until some fans spotted him but were horrified at his new tattoo. Steve O said that he was horrified and had no idea it would be so awful. He asked for the baby to be covered up and made into an adult male raping an ostrich. The whole thing is sick. I feel like when you get two out of control and anything goes kind of people together, they produce the basest evil.

When it comes to the German word, for the shade, it's not inherently a nazi thing as there are brands and things that use that word.
What makes it questionable in her case though is the history of what she's done and said so far. Basically it looks like she knows the word specifically for that reason rather than just knowing the German language and use of it overall. (Anyone know if she even knows how to speak German)?
So if she didn't really have this many scandals based around antisemitism it wouldn't matter, but her continued presence with this running theme causes it to be more problematic than if it was just used normally.
I also want to point out that there are strong links between ableism and nazi Germany as well. The lipstick name being a play on the r slur combined with other poor choices is awful and it’s not necessarily coming from a separate narrative. During the Holocaust over 250,000 disabled people were killed by nazis and this was also the time when Hans Asperger was coming up with some of the earliest research on Autism and separating autistic children into groups depending on their perceived value to society and referring the ones he deemed useless to child euthanasia clinics like Am Spiegelgrund. Using that slur which has ties to another community the Nazis mass murdered isn’t a good look with all the other antisemitic history she was involved with.

such a well-researched and thorough video as always! kat was one of my biggest inspirations growing up. seeing these instances of her ignorance and tolerance for bad people and ideologies was so bitter to watch. but her cancelling was one that gave me a lot of perspective on how to view celebs in general. if it wasn’t for her influence and inspiration, idk if i would have had the drive to pursue tattooing, and i’m so happy i did. and while i like who she was back then, i couldn’t say i’d vibe with her now. so it’s like i can appreciate the image of her and what she gave me as far as inspiration and drive, but i also don’t support her as a person or brand owner.

same i feel you, i was inspired by her as a child watching miami and la ink. i wanted to be tattooed by her as a bucket list type thing but i guess that will never happen now lmaoo. i’m extremely disappointed in her actions. i feel like you can have your own opinions on things but the moment you make others feel bad for their opinions and their way of life (ie, wearing masks and stuff like that) you’re taking it too far. especially since she could have jeopardized her business that way during the original lockdowns.

Her anti mask view towards her business is particularly stupid, since a tattoo shop should really be using PPE as a normal part of their practice. That job involves touching strangers and possibly being exposed to their blood. Covid isn’t even the worst thing you could catch from a client if you’re not careful.
There’s been callouts from other tattoo artists for years that she has always been pretty lax about safety. She doesn’t pull back her hair, she touches her face while in the middle of a session, isn’t disinfecting regularly… there’s a reason why there was always a lot of turnover at high voltage, even though you’d think that would be a dream job for any tattoo artist.

I didn't know half of this. It's unfortunate how far she has fallen. Sadly she lost my respect when she supported a clearly inadequate and racist tattoo artist who worked at her shop who claimed that he wouldn't or couldn't work with darker skin clients because of some nonsense. Either his style didnt look good on darker skin and/or darker skin couldn't hold color tattoos. Both nonsense. He was just not a skilled artist! There was an uproar in the tattoo community and several artist stepped forward to show his exact style on darker skin. She never retracted her statement.

I think a lot of people muck up and I think a lot of us muck up pretty badly, but when you aren't famous it easily fades into obscurity. When you are famous, being wrong, being politically incorrect, being ignorant of history or of current science can be doomsday to your career. it's too bad because I think she's a very gifted artist that just isn't smart enough to keep her mouth shut on things she doesn't understand. For the rest of us, we would be forgiven when we admitted to being sorely uneducated on certain things. For celebrities, their mistakes live on in infamy.
That's the price they pay for their fame money and status, I think it's an even trade.

Selektion means literally the same as selection, but in german more in an evolutionary, darwinistic sense. To firstly associate it with nazi germany is not fair to the word and it´s meaning. it´s a bit far fetched and hyped up.

It only takes a glance at the tattoo on her husbands neck to see its a sauwastika. It is is left facing symbol. The one the Nazis appropriated was the swastika or right facing symbol. I do believe people are ridiculously overly sensitive these days - getting offended at the most innocent of subjects and language- but this woman is a REAL problem. The swastika symbol was flipped around by Hitler so it would depend on how Reyes has it tattooed on his neck as to whether it is meant to represent the Nazi’s or South Asian religious traditions but either way it is a bad idea. If you don’t practice Buddhism or Hinduism you don’t needed it and if you aren’t a Nazi sympathizer ya don’t need it.

This kind of thinking was used to equate her son being diagnosed with autism after being vaccinated - a theory that has been thoroughly debunked. (Not to mention also super offensive to people with autism, as the "light doesn't go out behind their eyes".... They very much have the "light behind their eyes")
And her VERY public (at the time) tirade against vaccines, based mainly on this debunked "science" that vaccines cause autism, was literally everywhere and caused a TON of harm for not only the autistic community, but no doubt also influenced the rise of anti vax moms at the time. This was also right before we started seeing the first cases of pockets of measles outbreaks in decades.
Jenny McCarthy was given a platform on shows like Oprah. And if I remember correctly also participated in some court case surrounding autism and vaccines.
So yeah, my point is Jenny McCarthy did a LOT of damage with her horrible ideology.

Would also like to add some nuance to the Billy Joe Armstrong collab being called "Basket Case". The name comes from one of Green Day's songs with the same title - they even use the same font on the album cover - that was written by Billy Joe himself about his mental health struggles and how society made him feel like a basket case. Was it appropriate for KvD to use it? Probably not. But I just wanted to give some context here that wasn't in the video. But in general, the amount of problematic people she's surrounded herself with says a lot. One nazi/racist boyfriend could be an accident and one could give her the benefit of the doubt and assume she left once she found out, but 2 ex boyfriends being highly offensive and the current one has a literal swastika on his neck and your best friend for years was Jeffree Star who she fell out with because of business arrangements and not his very public racism? Nah man. And that her excuse was to say she's Latin shows that she doesn't understand how either racism or antisemitism works at all.

But that's the things with her... it's a lot of 'little mistakes' a lot of them floating around the same issues. So I'm not sure I would call her villain, but I definitely questions her morals and opinions. Even if, after all this, they are just unintentional mistakes, at some point ignorance does become an offence. At some point you have to reflect, educate yourself and get your shit straight. I didn't know about most of this but stopped buying makeup from her brand years ago because of some of the controversy. Admittedly, I was obsessed with those liquid lipsticks as a teen and still have a couple today. I always appreciated that her makeup was vegan (and it's sometimes hard to find fully vegan and cruelty free products) but it's definitely weird that one of her most popular shades was called "Lolita". I guess now I'm wondering, if she's no longer associated with the makeup, if its ethical to buy it again. I noticed last time I was at Sephora the shade names have mostly changed but didn't realize it was because of all this.

I am surprised to see Kat's anti vax stance has changed, NOT because I'm surprised that she believes in vaccines or whatever but when she made that anti vax post it felt more like commentary going on in relation to some discourse in the vegan community. I've been vegan since 2009 and vegetarian since 2005 and Kat, despite her many flaws, has always been proudly and borderline militantly vegan, moreso than I have. I've seen a lot of vegan communities discuss how vaccines aren't vegan cause there's egg whites in them or some bullshit. I personally am vaccinated, and I would vaccinate my children if I had any, but there's been some vegan who reject vaccines on the basis that they contain animal by product, but not cause they think they don't work or cause autism or whatever. This was her very easy to explain out but upon hearing her apology I realize she just was genuinely anti vax for a time. Wild

Honestly, I hate the excuse of "I love history". I come from a country with a very dark and oppressive history. We have never been called out and we NEVER get the same treatment as the British Empire (even though we should) unless it's coming from our neighbors. I'd argue it's the exact opposite, as no one will give you the side eye if you say something positive about a ruler from that era. However, I still acknowledge that we have years, if not decades of repentance and apologies to come. I do not romanticize this location's history, nor do I want other people to do the same.

In the public eye mayybe but def. not financial wise, Shes known for mostly her tv show which ended back in 2011 and had 4 seasons on the tlc network, highly doubt she made 10s of millions from this. However what she did do for about 11 years was her makeup line, 11 yrs ago makeup wasnt what it is now, so she was sort of the first celeb/influencer with an actual line and you can imagine how much money she made in that time frame. In 2016 she bought her hancock park home for 6.6 million, then 2 year ago the indiana one for 1.5 million, the prop taxes alone on the hancock one are about 70k yearly, I live in LA so know this stuff. On top of this after she sold her makeup line she released music and basically financed a small tour and flew her whole band private, shes also flown private to Indiana where shes moving to. If you have any idea flying private and long distances is NOT cheap, 10s of thousands of dollars, just saying all this to say this woman is loaded for life, maybe also part of the reason why she says not very popular things, because she doesnt care to get “cancelled” as she got her millions now. Just really wish I knew what the extent of her fortune is lol. I doubt she would be able to release something else now and be as successful but at this point this woman doesnt care.
