I remember watching this live in 1993. Gay Byrne treated Annie Murphy shamefully. It wasn't an interview - it was an inquisition. I loved the way she walked off at the end! Thank goodness the days of fawning and being obsequious to the Catholic Church are over.

You've a good point there. To be fair, I don't think this woman was treated well on the show.. like, even Gay's closing comment seemed to be a bit of a low blow. I remember seeing this in full and I felt they were kinda shitty to this woman. To the point, if I was in the audience I'd have stuggled to keep my mouth shut.. admittedly, it's was a very different time, even though it's not all that long ago. I was only 5-6 when this was shot. But, still.. I dunno.. just didn't rub me right. Just my two cents.

If anybody watched Gay Byrnes fawning interview with Mother Teresa back in 1974 or his later "The Meaning of Life" series you would see that he was one of those holier than thou catholics. The type that can't admit even to themselves that the clergy lie and are not perfect and ridicule people who even suggest otherwise. I met plenty of those types within the Gardai when I worked there which is why they got away with such abuse of children etc for so many years.
And mother Theresa denied her ill flock any medication saying they were suffering like Jesus. Yet when she was terminally ill a he cleared off to Singapore for treatment. Go figure

In the early 90s Annie Murphy came forward and revealed that when he'd been working in America, they'd started having a sexual relationship. He refused to leave the priesthood to be with her and when she got pregnant he even tried to make her have an abortion. This was a massive scandal as a high-ranking bishop had broken loads of the rules that the Catholic church set for ordinary parishioners - don't use condoms, don't have sex outside marriage and don't have abortions.
