  • In 1993 Annie Murphy was a guest on Irish television. Annie spoke to Gay Byrne on The Late Late Show about her affair with the former Bishop of Galway Dr. Eamon Casey, whom she had claimed to be the father of her son Peter. Annie must be highly commended for her bravery in telling her side of the story, which she did with absolute elegance. A wonderful lady and an iconic figure in Irish modern history. This is what happened on that evening!

I distinctly remember that woman in the audience at the same dentist as me. After several hours waiting she stormed out of the room chasing the dentist, shouting at him "What do you mean I'm not flossing enough? Gay a judge? It was Gay who who allowed Annie's voice to be aired and made public. This was 1990s Ireland. Gay, he was responsible for so more stories being told, including being largely responsible along with Mary Robinson for the ability of condoms to be bought by Irish people without a doctors prescription.

My sister has a friend who was adopted. When she was 22 and had just graduated college in the early 90s, she set out to find her biological father. She is tremendously resourceful and persistent and did find him. He is a prominent doctor of a very proud family of garda, doctors, priests and local town business owners. He refused all her contact, so she made an appointment with him as a patient. She confronted him privately and told him that I'm you're daughter. I'm a beautiful smart 22 year old attorney that you want to pretend don't exist.

He's a teacher and his Dad is also from a prominent Family. He wants a relationship with his Son now but my nephew isn't that interested. I thought my mom would disown my sister when she got pregnant but by some miracle, my family supported her eventually. I had moved to CA before all this happened. Ireland was a tough place for young women all the way up to the late 80s before I left. I heard a lot of heartless stories including from a girlfriend that I had in my early 20s. Her Dad was a bit of a tyrant. We loved being together and she was terrified of him.

I was friends with Peter Murphy during my childhood in Simsbury, Connecticut, and also got to know his mother. They were lovely people. When the Eamon Casey scandal broke in 1992, I reconnected with Peter...but then we lost touch. I moved to Los Angeles in 1996, and am sorry I never connected with Annie while she was in Riverside, CA. Looking back, she was a woman with much bravery, and she and Peter were very, very kind to me.

The lady, Annie Murphy, was treated so badly at the time. The bishop finally admitted he was the father. I don’t know how she remained so ladylike, calm and dignified during this dreadful interview.
Ireland was so church ridden and bigoted. I wonder if all those who harangued Ms Murphy would do that today.
I hope Annie and Peter have had a good and happy life thus far and I wish them well in the future.

He then stole from the poor, another rule broken. He's a thief. I have no idea where people get this idea from. Gay and RTE, then and now have always been part of the establishment. The same establishment that protected ‘Casey’ until he had to come clean. Annie Murphy did more to change Irish society than Gay and his ilk ever did.
