  • ‪@TownToursonline‬ This video looks at the fascinating history and the amazing story of the city of Newport, Rhode Island. It is so much more than just the playground of the wealthy elite, but was a town steeped in a rich and diverse history. It has seen struggles in the early days of the American colonies, developing into a powerful economic stronghold prior to the American Revolutionary War, and becoming the spot where the very wealthy of the Gilded Age and beyond came to spend their summers. There is so much to this fascinating city, that you may be surprised by all you learn.

Hey, if Newport, Rhode Island was good enough for the "Wealthy 400" as a summer vacation,...well, I can't wait until my visit from August through September 2023, mates! I love the cool climate and the history (Australia has very little history to brag about as a large former penal colony). Like to smell the salty sea air in that part of the world!

I live in Newport and love the place. I only wish that it were as friendly to biking as it was during earlier eras.

My ancestor William Ellery was one of the signers of the declaration of Independence from Rhode Island. When the British occupied Newport they burnt down his house and business. William Ellery was the customs collector at Newport for thirty years until his death in 1820. He was also a staunch abolitionist and also served a few years on the Rhode Island supreme court.

Indeed. They did film the '70's movie version with Robert Redford and Mia Farrow in Newport, at Rosecliff mansion and Marble House.

Really interesting history. I was watching another CZcamsr whose platform is travel. He was talking about all of the Portuguese restaurants in Newport. Now I know why there are so many🙂

Wonderful! Thank you. I really learned a lot about the WHOLE history of Newport and not only about the 'Gilded Age'. I especially enjoyed the first 'cottages' that were built from wealthy plantation owners before the gilded age industrialists.

As a native Rhode Islander, I never went to Newport unless there was school functions. Had friends that went to Roger's high. Or to go to weddings. And as a teen broke into Fort Adam's to explore. This was in the 80s. I'm sure the statuet of limitations has expired by now. Also Newport has 2 sides. The touristy gilded age side and the navy and blue collar side. For us main land residents, Newport was a tourist destination. As an adult who moved to other states, when I visit Rhode Island I now go to Newport as a tourist. Most of this history we knew from school. But, until a few years ago, as a tourist I learned about the slave trade out of Newport. Something not to be proud of. But, I love Rhode Island and it's vast history and the people. If it wasn't so expensive to live there( mostly high taxes) I would move back.

You have the wrong picture of Cornelius Vanderbilt. You pictured his father. The grandson Cornelius built Breakers. His brother George built Biltmore.

I know one tiny propety, im said to own but have no control of ... that i call isreal! They said it to be the only port in the region in north kingstown. I loved aquidneck island. Au-quid-nec. Franco helped the french and americans defeat the british. However, i love the brotosh culture of the region as a decendant of franco, a jew, a spanish and french royal and a born and raised US American.

The 1925 novel, "The Great Gatsby" and its movie adaptations are set at Long Island, New York; not Newport, Rhode Island.

He was not talking about the story's setting in the book. He mentioned Newport because this is where the 1974 Robert Redford version was filmed. Just as 'High Society' is a musical version of 'The Philadelphia Story' but also shot in Newport.

Im a US American who happens to be a jew. When living in Neport, i was a special concept. However, i had to keep watch at night on the matter in the city human kind and where in the hell is the patrol at night doing it as a US military spouse, wondering if hige crime was worse than the corruption and small time contraband supply created locally.
