The most disgusting thing, that soiled the Oscars more than what Smith did, was the standing ovation. These elite actors and directors love to make political commentary on morality in society, yet when they witness an assault by one of their peers, they stand and applaud as if he just killed Thanos. Despicable.

Full of narcissism, self-aggrandisement and self-pity God has given him a calling to protect people and he's a vessel of love, but it's not his fault he slapped someone. For those that defend Will Smith's actions and blame it on or condemn Chris Rock's joke as "over the line" or justification for Will's actions, isn't the solution No More comedians as host or presenters and No More jokes. Clearly those folks that approve of or are okay with Smith's actions and blame Rock for the joke, think that comedians must hand out a questionnaire before every performance so that the audience can inform the comedian of all of their medical conditions or psychological issues and any subject they determine to be offensive or out of bounds, so that the comedian can know which jokes to tell. Plus comedians must be required to sign a legal waiver that states that they will not hold any audience member accountable or legally liable for any violent physical or verbal assualt they commit if the comedian makes a joke that was deemed not okay by the pre-show questionnaire.

In my opinion this is rather simple. Chris Rock is a comedian. He was on stage doing his job. Doing what he is well paid to do. Comedians are known to be conterversial, offensive and uncensored, it's the nature of the job and to be expected. The fact that a man doing his job is assaulted on an international stage is unforgivable. To his credit, Chris Rock took the slap and moved on. He chose not to escalate, but to carry on with the job he was paid to do.
As for Will Smith, violence is always a last resort. If there had been no other choice, I might even side with Mr. Smith; however, there were other options available. Something as simple as yelling to Rock that he was over the line, (Smith had no problem yelling and being heard.) It would have made Chris Rock look a bit foolish and inconsiderate and still made Smith out to appear to be supporting his wife. Smith had time to consider his actions. he stood up, got up on the stage, walked the distance to Mr. Rock and assaulted him on stage, in front of an international audience.
In my opinion, Smith should receive a second oscar for the nights performance. He went from laughing and smiling to anger and rage to weeping and crying and and back to happy and dancing at the after party. Mr. Smith obviously has issues with willpower and self control. He is a poor role model and a lesser person for being unable to control his own emotions. Not to mention throwing a right while dropping his left. If Chris had relatiated, his big head was a perfect target. What happened to all that training for Ali?

a couple of points, John - the Oscars never started out as a public extravaganza, it was a private dinner only for the nominees in the early years then along came TV and it was something to use to actually promote the films - maybe it should go back to that for a few years; also NO ONE seems to acknowledge that every award for the rest of the show was then tainted, including the one that Rock was presenting to Best Documentary [QuestLove's excellent Summer of Soul]; and the producer of this year's show [as every year] was HIRED by the Academy to put on a good show, not there to decide who's to be removed from the premises for ASSAULT...

The Academy is just trying to cover their butts. I don't believe there was a heated exchange about him leaving. First of all, they wouldn't have wanted to make the situation worse in any capacity by having him leave - whether forcibly or on his own. It would've caused further disruptions and embarrassment. The Academy knew he was going to win and I'm sure that his publicist told them that he would merely apologize for his actions during his acceptance speech, and all would be well. But what they did do, was get Rock out the venue.

Will Smith truly thought initially that he was justified in his actions. It is a very sad and disappointing situation all the way around. The more I think about it, the more I believe expulsion or an extensive suspension from the Academy may be the only choice; with the option for him to return much later after a thorough review. Either that, or Will goes on international TV and lets Chris Rock slap him three times in the face as hard as he can unopposed; with the option to have the Rock substitute in for him to do the slaps.

Academy do? They couldn't award the Oscar to a runner up because the Academy membership votes on the winner, not the Academy President.
They couldn't just not mention Smith as the winner or mention him and refuse to present him his award with him sitting right there.
