    I think the Academy purposely ignored it because they know how precarious their show already is. The backlash to that is, this also ruins a lot of good will comedians will have to present/host. • @ferallemur
      @ferallemur Před 2 lety +4

      I think this concern is overstated.
      There is a certain type of roast comedy employed by a certain subset of comedians. Kathy Griffin comes to mind, as she tweeted out something very similar to this comment (that every comedian now had to be worried about people walking onstage). Ricky Gervais is another.
      Do they have to worry that somebody is going to walk onstage and punch them? Yes. But that was true before last night. It is a danger that comes with the territory of telling mean-spirited jokes directly to the faces of people who you know are not going to take it well.
      But that's not every comedian, by any stretch of the imagination, and it's not even supposed to be every award show. That kind of comedy is only ever okay at The Golden Globes, where the stakes aren't high and everybody is there drinking and partying. The Oscars are the actual prestigious award show, and jokes there aren't supposed to tear people down.
      So if, for example, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler (who should host every award show ever) were approached to host the Academy Awards, do we really think that they're going to be worried about being assaulted on stage? Probably not. They don't tell jokes that could ever provoke this sort of reaction. The vast majority of comedians don't. Hell, most comedians stick to the safest territory of all, self-effacing humor, and present the show as if it's a show full of beautiful, glamourous, wonderful people, being hosted by a peasant, unworthy to be in their presence. None of these comedians ever need to worry about getting punched, and aren't going to be irrationally worried about being the next assault victim.

    For the Oscars to be, relatively, successful, what they need to do is pretty simple, obvious stuff: Have 1 host, cut the unnecessary "comedy" bits, present every award live, allow winners to finish their speeches (especially the awards with multiple winners), & modernize the award categories (add stunt coordination, casting director, and voice performance). Keep the reunions and only have performances of nominated songs. The Oscars don't need frills. The Oscars are great because it's the OSCARS. It's the pinnacle. The rest will take care of itself.

    My two cents on the Smith Vs. Rock saga: 1. Will Smith knew he was going to win the Best Actor category yet still allowed his emotions and ego to crap the bed he has spent decades making, and 2. Chris Rock declined to lay charges against Mr Smith. Perhaps it was because he felt partly guilty to the events, perhaps he had his arm twisted by the Academy not to do so, perhaps he thought it would send a wrong message to his African American audience in the wake of BLM... I honestly don't know. What I do know is that a criminal investigation of the matter would mean that Chris Rock wouldn't be able to comment on the incident on his current worldwide stand up tour.

      @@williampearson6299 I doubt it. You cannot humiliate a man in public and then continue as friends. Chris Rock's joke was very inoffensive. Will Smith is just a very emasculated man.

    Call it stockholm syndrome maybe, but I was entertained by the telecast. It was shocking to watch the Smith v Rock showdown uncensored (in Aus) in real time, and the whole show had the energy of a slow motion car crash as it limped towards the finish line. I'm all for a 'successful' ceremony, whatever that may be, but at the very least I won't be forgetting this insanity for a good long while.
    Plus we got a classic Dan Rant out of it so no complaints here.

    I just watched the 20 second clip when Will Smith dropped the mask for once and nothing else. When I saw that Amy Schumer was one of the hosts I already knew it would be bad.
    I completely agree with you about the host situation. Just get someone who is a natural in that role, do less bits and have more time for the awards. Billy Crystal always did a great job, I think Graham Norton would be fantastic today. And please bring back all awards into the show! If the Academy thinks it is worth recognising these categories, then they shouldn't be left out of the actual ceremony.

    You know who says shit like “love makes you do crazy things?”
    Domestic abusers do. This was physical violence, and anyone who thinks it’s acceptable is dumber than a box of rocks. I do not care about Jada’s alopecia. It doesn’t matter. You don’t get to meet words you don’t like with violence. He should have been removed from the building. Someone could accept the Oscar on his behalf.
    Chris Rock for example.
    No kidding, Will needed to be removed. The Academy’s pathetic “we don’t condone violence” tweet did no favors, because they did condone it, and supported it by failing to act.
    Congratulations, Academy, you’ve made this acceptable. What complete tools.
