No affiliation, but last February, bought some "TECHSPRAY ROLLER REJUVENATOR PLATEN CLEANER" on line, and while it does not really appear to soften an old rubber platen, it cleans it pretty well, and it makes the platen 'tackier' for a period of time ( just how long, I am not sure at this point), helping to feed the paper into the typewriter. " Citrus-based solvent designed to clean and revitalize rubber rollers and platens". Improves rubber roller grip and reduces misfeeds and jams. Priced at around $5.00 per ounce ( yes $5.00 per ounce!) it is not cheap, but I use very little of it, wiping it on the platen with small pieces of the disposable blue, cloth-like shop towels...a little goes a long way. It comes in a two-ounce plastic bottle. Shop around on the internet and check the pricing.

Wow fantastic looks like you an get some real speed out of this machine
For anyone else cleaning one of these up please do not use alcohol. IBM service manuals state it will damage the plastic.

what about assisting the wetting with a solvent?
It could also be a polar vs. nonpolar solvent issue.
