Unfortunatly this test isnt very good for telling porosity and her advice for nonporous hair worries me. You never want to purposly try to raise your hair cuticle because it's hard to get it to go back down. A cuticle that is laid down protects your hair and makes it shiny. Nonporous hair doesnt need moisture forced into it, because it easily retains the natural moisture in the cortex. Raising the cuticle just causes unnecessary damage.
And remember that product build up absolutely will affect porosity! Only do this test AFTER using a clarifying shampoo for a “blank slate” because if you use products with lots of oils or butters, they do coat the hair shaft and cause build up over time which can also have the same signs as low porosity hair. Build up prevents moisture from properly penetrating the hair shaft and thus causes dry, dehydrated hair.

As frustrating low porosity hair can be it actually is a blessing. You use less products and when you find your holy grail just stick with it and I promise you’ll achieve anything.
You might have high porosity. Because low porosity usually tends to take more product because it’s so dry from products not penetrating it properly. With high porosity you need very very little products because the hair saturates to fast and takes in product really quick.
@@liastorm795 That's the exact opposite for me. I have very high porousity hair and it absorbs so much product it's insane. Mexican and black; mostly Mexi. I use body butter!; Soothing touch brand. Essentially if your hair still feels like cotton when it’s wet then you have low porosity hair. Which is why washing goes may be a bit more difficult for you too. Moisture retention is your friend. It doesn’t take much for our hair to get dry because it doesn’t absorb as much moisture, your hair tangles and breaks off a lot easier when it’s dry so moisturising and conditioning your hair is where you need to prioritise.

Hey I have all signs of high porosity hair as it's frizzy, tangles, curly, it's thick , it's oily on the scalp after two days of wash but dry on the ends, and also it takes forever to dry , so I'm hella confused 😭😭
Hairstylist here. One thing I want to point out is that the hair used was from a brush which means it has build up on it from previous product and sitting inside the brush. This test should be done on clean hair. After the one strand of hair is shampooed it then good to the bottom. This is correct is high porosity, but that’s too high. At this point the cuticle is so open that it does not have the ability to retain any moisture because the cuticle is wide open and left open. The objective is a slightly raised cuticle which is a normal cuticle or “medium porosity”. This is the best position for s cuticle because It’s open enough to receive yet closed enough to keep it in. The curlier the hair the more porous the hair naturally is because the cuticle is unable to lay flat dir to the coils so a shampoo for low porosity hair shouldn’t be used on most curly textures.
I did the test with clean hair before even reading your comment. Mines stayed on the top , what shampoo do you recommend one for low or medium please ? If that a thing
@@queb558 you have low porosity, which means your cuticles are tight so it may be hard for anything to penetrate the hair. You would want a shampoo that focuses on balancing the ph level of your hair. So in essence it will open the cuticle enough to be considered mid range. 4.5-5.5 I wouldn’t be comfortable suggesting a product without being able to analyze your hair
The fact that the hair in the brush has some products on it would actually be tricky to follow through with this type of testing. Your statement helped clarify what I was wondering. 🙂
@@jonaenece3483 except the video is wrong. you can only test for porosity on clean and washed hair. Not a strand of hair with product buildup pulled from a hair brush

@@GoaWay... Pretty much the texture would be how your hair feels. It could be course, fine, etc. Different textures require a different approach to caring for it. YES!!! This is so important. I’ve been natural for 10 years and learned about my porosity like 6 years ago. I didn’t start working with my high porosity until this year 🤣. Learning what your hair loves and hates is a process.
What’s so crazy is that years ago when I did this test, I noticed that my hair would be on the top for a while and then drop. I thought I wasn’t doing the test right. Over time I would just give my hair time to absorb water and that is what this video shows me!!! Awesome!
But what happens when u have multiple porosities in your hair? Cuz I put three strands from different parts of my head and one stayed at the top while the other 2 were in the middle. 🤷🏽♀️
I imagine it’s like having different textures on your facial skin -where you cater to what is needed in those specific areas. But also doing a little bit of trial and error probably won’t hurt.
At that point, you have to know which porosity you have most on your hair and make sure your hair isn't damaged either because that will change it's porosity. It's best to look at the reviews of products and see if it works on the majority of people with multi-porosity hair or test different products yourself, if possible.
Hairdresser here 🙋🏽♀️. If your hair is dry moisturise it more. High porosity is damaged hair (chemically or heat damaged). If your hair is not damaged, you'll be just fine. Organic oil and water will do. Use vegan mouse if you want your curls to have a hold.
If you have low porosity hair you should use lighter oils such as grape seed oil, almond oil, and jojoba oil. If you have high porosity then you’ll have to use thicker oils such as castor oil, coconut oil, and olive oil. For people with medium porosity hair you should use rosehip oil, grape seed oil, and avocado oil. There’s also a method called loc or lco and I think it also depends on your hair porosity but overall just listen to what your hair needs/wants.
@@amber6784 Interesting. I haven't heard of this before... I have low porosity hair and use any oil I grab 😅. I have olive oil to Amla oil. They all work just fine. Over time I would just give my hair time to absorb water and that is what this video shows me!!! Awesome!
It’s one thing to give advice, but proving it is awesome!
THE BEST DEMONSTRATION OF HAIR POROSITY EVER!
I learned so much from this! Thank you my dear 💜
Lets appreciate how she spend time explaining this💓❤️
Thank you! I've learned more in one short, than I did watching 30min vids!!
You're a real lifesaver! 💖💖💖
This was helpful! I just tried the same test but with kinky curlys shampoo and my low porosity strand sank. Such a cool experiment!
But what happens when u have multiple porosities in your hair? Cuz I put three strands from different parts of my head and one stayed at the top while the other 2 were in the middle. 🤷🏽♀️
@@hoo590coo Questions like that is why we have the internet, smarty
I imagine it’s like having different textures on your facial skin -where you cater to what is needed in those specific areas. But also doing a little bit of trial and error probably won’t hurt.
Test it out like 10 times and get a average of what floats and what sinks. But I have never heard of putting too much moisture into our hair 👀
porosity doesn't actually matter sometimes it could just be the products in your hair like oil
At that point, you have to know which porosity you have most on your hair and make sure your hair isn't damaged either because that will change it's porosity. It's best to look at the reviews of products and see if it works on the majority of people with multi-porosity hair or test different products yourself, if possible.
Wow this is so interesting. Can you do videos on types of products for the different porosités?
I did the same when I had high porosity hair. I was taught that type 3 hair should use lighter oils such as coconut, almond and argon oil and type 4 hair, regardless or state, uses the heavier oils.
Are you from the US by any chance? Only asking because I have 17 years experience, studied hairdressing (all hair types) at 3 different hair schools (2021 I did a refresher) but I tend to see different advice on YT. 😅🙈
@@JustMeVanessa Yes, but I’m only 15 so I was giving advice I heard from older people who had my hair type and hair porosity since the products and gels they used work for my hair
@@amber6784 Oh I see. No probs at all. I was super curious as it seems like there are different teachings. As long as it works for your hair, that's the main thing. 😊
I'm grateful for the hair info but I'm also looking at your gorgeous nails 💅
This is the best and most thorough hair porosity explanation I've ever seen, thanks sis, I'm about to test rn 😁
I needed this visual my whole life however, I am grateful you made this and now maybe I can save my hair!!!!
Same. She explained AND showed it STEP BY STEP!
It's not an accurate test. If you believe this, you are wasting your time because it's a test that's been disproved by top hair professionals multiple times to beat waste of time
Thank you for this hun I greatly appreciated
You’re welcome!!
liking and commenting so that more curly haired people can see this and not make the mistakes i did as my hair is low porosity. i saw a cg friendly protein shampoo and protein conditioner which made my hair fall out so much, idk how I'm not bald yet. knowing your hair porosity is VERY IMPORTANT.
Round of applause👏🏾 for her dedication to keep up with that ONE😮 strand of hair 😬!
EXCELLENT!! FINALLY a way to know for sure! Subscribing on GP! Girl you deserve a million subscribers for this alone!
How many years have I spent just to see this 60 sec video 😂😭😫
Thank you for this! I just did it and found out I got medium porosity!
YOU ARE AMAZINGGGG!!!!! How am I just know learning this 😭‼️💜💜
Why in the heck am I just hearing this?
Thank you Sis!
"As you can see"
My eyes: Nah, im out
Thank you for this! Been seeing so many people talk about having low, med or high porosity hair and been wondering how to find out what mine is. This is soooo helpful
Low porosity does well with some clarifying ! Been a huge game changer for mw
Thank you so much for this visual!!! Much needed and appreciated!!
Seriously this was the most helpful video ever....and it was a short!
About to try this right now! Thank you!!! 💜
You’re welcome!!
Thanks fot teaching me something new. As a retired hairdresser I love when people can identify and prioritize what's important to their hair and beauty regime. There is more then one way to skin a cat and should all do what works for us as individuals. Get it girl.
I didn't know there was a way to test your hair! Thank you, now I can get hair products that work for my hair finally!!!
This answered all my questions about my hair and products I use! Thanks so much!❤️
As a straight haired mama with a curly headed baby..thank you for this lesson 🥺
Thank you!!! This is the first video I’ve seen that was actually helpful.
Thank you for this! I just learned something so important!
Bless you! I’m even more excited to grow my hair out again.
"Nikki what are you doing?"
