  • There aren't many Hanukkah specials out there, but out of what there is, Rugrats just may have the gold standard. We discuss the show's relationship with Judaism, how A Rugrats Chanukah came to be, and see to just what the Anti-Defamation League was objecting to.

As a Jew, I cannot tell you how much this special matters to me. It was like the premier of Black Panther. We just hadn't seen our holidays on TV in this way. The less said about the holiday armadillo, the better.

I went to Catholic School in the 90's and my 1st grade teacher was weirded out at me knowing "so much" about Judaism, thanks to the Rugrats specials. I just thought the stories behind the holidays were very interesting after seeing these cartoons as a small child, and was telling everyone at school about them. She actually called up my mom and asked if we were Jewish. My mom said: "Well we have Jewish friends, but she learned it from TV. Why are you so concerned?" She didn't have a good answer. I'm agnostic now but thanks, Rugrats, for teaching so many of us to understand and respect other cultures.

Sounds like the sort of Catholic upbringing in my family, though I never really dig that deep into Judaism because of a TV special like this one, but finding out there were other faiths out there is something that did bewildered you at a young age.

Rugrats helped in educating a small town kid who lived primarily Christian area learn about different cultures. I remember an incident from when I was in 2nd grade. My teacher who was 100% about teaching us diverse cultures and different holidays once asked " What are the other two holidays are there in the Christmas season!?" I proudly rose my hand and proclaimed "Chanukah and Kwanzaa!" She was so proud of me but I didn't have the heart to tell her it was because I had watched the Rugrats specials. But thank you Rugrats! For a brief period I was seen as the smartest kid in class.

While I certainly don't think that people within a group can't have internalized bigotry, I feel like it would've done the ADL well to look into who the showrunners were and to have discussed this with them before blasting them like this. Had they learned of the relatively large number of Jewish artists and writers behind the show, maybe instead of just condemning the franchise outright, they could've worked with the show to find ways to continue respectfully portraying Jewish culture and heritage (as I feel they were doing). Perhaps then the whole kerfuffle over that comic strip may have been avoided.

Rugrats certainly had a thing for mixed families. I have a lot of respect for that and respect for Nickelodeon for giving them the ok to make it. Admittedly, I'm not Jewish myself, my mother's side is Catholic and my father's side is presbyterian, (I'm still Christian either way, though I don't go to church every Sunday any more, I keep a Bible on my book shelf for guidance) but I still found it interesting to learn of these traditions and holidays. Hanukkah itself and it's history I found fascinating as a kid, still do. Though darn Adam Sandler for keeping that song stuck in my head!

I often refer to that particular denomination of the Christian faith thanks to not only realizing why I represent the majority as far as holidays celebrated at the tail end of the year is concerned (at least in my respective area), but also realizing in retrospect some legitimate reasons for the episodes discussed in this review, though there are a few synagogues in my respective area that I happen to pass by on a regular basis.

I draw myself like that all the time. I see other Jewish people do the same which is why I love the designs of the grandparents in the show. Hi, Jewish person here! I loved the Hanukkah and Passover specials as a kid, and still do. And the ADL made valid points. Just because you aren’t familiar with the history of antisemitism and antisemitic tropes doesn’t mean you can dismiss it. It’s possible that the Jewish people who worked on the show weren’t necessarily familiar with these things either (I could get into why but it would take a while, basically, the conversations around representation were not mainstream then as they are now). Ideally the ADL would have offered guidance on what they could have done instead, but ultimately it was the show and network’s responsibility to do more research/consult with people who were more knowledgeable on the subject.

This issue of expression of lived experience in the face of a history of marginality clashing with a censor council's worries about offending seems to come up a lot.
    Like,
Jewish writers: * put their lived experiences in the show in the most affectionate manner*
Faceless Organizations: "Being Jewish is antisemitic"
Jewish Writers: "wtf no it's not"
Non-Jewish executives: * stops the specials that helped a generation of kids learn about Passover and Chanukah, helped normalize culture away from being stuck on just Christian holidays*
I got a similar feeling watching the Nick at Night episode. Women who like Donna Reed, are basically told they should be offended by it. The show almost didn't make it on the air because of certain feminists whose perspectives aren't wrong, but aren't in a void either. When money gets into the picture and worried about theoretically people who aren't themselves, things get... indeed, complicated.
Bur from the ADL's perspective, the decisions they made make plenty of sense. They don't just have to look out for things that are antisemitic in-itself, but it could reminds someone of a racist stereotype indirectly. Internalized hatred is more than just repeating things or hating yourself, it's dialectical. We don't know what each other is thinking and sometimes we can't just trust someone on face value. Internalized hatred can make people hide aspects about themselves for safety reasons, which can lead to people feeling uncomfortable around others who are more comfortable with themselves.
So I think maybe if the ADL and writers had worked with each other from then on more closely during the development process, they could requested their changes before going live, it'd been smoother than the boss abruptly speaking over everyone and pulling the plug on it like that.

I just want to take this moment to commend the Disney Channel of 2021 for "The Ghost and Molly McGee", with two episodes featuring *great* Jewish representation. One is about about the Bat Mitzvah of the best friend character, Libby, and the other its own Hanukkah show.
Equally as fitting -- Libby herself is voiced by Lara Jill Miller, who has her own nice gig at Nickelodeon on "The Loud House" as Lisa.

The ADL had a point about not featuring the mourner's Kaddish in the comic, but they took it too far with everything else. Even if the designs did unfortunately resemble propaganda cartoons, in this case actual Jewish people said yes, some of their relatives did look like Boris and Minka. It was a complicated situation, but because the ADL took things too far we were robbed of more Jewish representation.
(But you're right in that what we got was excellent. Harold from Hey Arnold! is one example I can think of.)

I do not like that the adl getting so hostile to this. To me it's absurd. I learned so much from these episodes and because I was such an inquisitive kid it galvanized me to learn more. I first learned of the Holocaust or showa. I was so broken and disturbed because I loved Rugrats. So I was able to really connect with true horror of it. To me it was learning that the Nazis murdered the Rugrats. I'm firmly against racism, extremism and violent bigotry. So if I was able to learn compassion and turn away from racist ideologies by watching Rugrats how can that be a bad thing? It's a cartoon so yeah like all the features are literally going to be exaggerated. Was kimmi offensive for having more almond shaped eyes? Is it not better to have the representation? I kind of agree that the Boris model on it's own with no context could possibly be seen as offensive but once placed in the show with all the other bizarre character designed it's actually one of the more normal looking ones. I had Russian step grand parents and the characters reminded me of them and I loved it. Idk... I'm a intersectional anarchist and anti-fascist I get called an sjw all the time but sometimes I think people can offended too easily. And definitely when you have. Something like this where it's actually trying to be inclusive.

It sounds like you (and some others in these comments) lack the historical context to understand the points that the ADL made. Please listen to *all* marginalized when they are speaking up on negative tropes.

@@jillsarah7356 dude ughz hoe abouf this ...please read my comment and think about what was said before responding! I would hope my statements in regards to being an intersectional anarchist, my name referring to being aspie and my profile of my flag denoting queer idednty would have properly set up my statues as a marginalized person as well as show I clearly am someone who routinely fighting for minorities. My point was not to ignore marginalized people and I certainly do not ignore history. I simply believe many people are disingenuous with complaints about racism, sexism, transphobia, ableism, homophobia etc... again this is from someone who repeatedly had experienced ableism, transphobia and general bigotry. But at some point you have to be able to tell the difference between harmless jokes and depictions that are literal cartoons meant for children are not the same as genuine state oppression and suppression. They tried to make a children's comic they are not making nazi propaganda. They aren't kkk members. They aren't making anti Trans CZcams videos and aren't queen hating religious groups calling to kill queen people. Some leftists and liberals especially need to grow a spine.

you alexandrian cultists (or, yea hath God saiders) really got to desperately got to get rid of a perfect standard, because if not, then you'll be faced with two problems.
      1. if you reject it, you'll be seen as the infidels you alexandrian really are

Regardless, there's really nothing magical about the King James version just because it uses "thees and thous." Every translation has a political motivation. Look up a more modern one that is devoted to preserving the original meaning of the text as much as it can.
