- Todd appeared on the October 29, 1989 episode of the short-lived music television show Night Music. He performed three songs: "Can't Stop Running" and "Parallel Lines" from his new album, Nearly Human... and a surprise rendition of "Never Mind the Why and Wherefore" from the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta, H.M.S. Pinafore (assisted by Taj Mahal and Michele Gray)!
The accompanists include Pat Metheny (guitar), Philippe Saisse (keyboards), Christian Marclay (turntables), host David Sanborn (saxophone), and featuring the fabulous Hal Willner on triangle! - Hudba
Only Todd could persuade Taj Mahal into doing this. Love them both.❤️
OMG Michelle Rundgren is so great! Why wasn't she a huge star?! She's fucking brilliant!
Exactly! She had an amazing voice and was fun to watch😊
One of my favorite moments of broadcast television...I remember this well. Still makes me laff to see everyone together in those silly hats.
Awesome.
One of my favorite moments from a show that was filled with highlights, each and every week. Thank you Hal.
I watched these Night Music episodes live back then... Absolutely great stuff. Getting eclectic musicians to step WAY outside of their genres and doing a splendid job of it.
The advertiser, Budweiser, kept asking Sanborn who the “demographic” was..... He’d say... “Musicians!”
I remember seeing this live on TV ... thanks for stirring the cobwebs in my head.
Thank you, thank you, thank you @rednoise0 !!!!! A friend showed me this years ago (20 years ago!) on a VHS and I laughed for days. Taj Mahal and Pat Metheny and a wacky turntableist doing G&S! Priceless. The Internet was made to preserve stuff like this....
She’s wonderful!
Only Todd Rundgren could tell Pat Metheny on David Sanborn's show, "No, Pat, you're just playing support...here, wear this hat and sit over there."
What a trip man
OH MY TODD!! LUV IT SO MUCH!
It loves you.
Goddamn it this guy has balls.
This is HILARIOUS!! I played Sir Joseph earlier this year -- so I really dig this video!
what a FUN night that was! FANTASTIC to re-live this eve again-THANKS for posting.
(todd rules! )
This is a treasure I'd never stumbled upon. Enjoying it immensely, thank you!
Priceless. I miss this show...
Always fun to watch and attempt to sing along! Thanks for posting.
This is great stuff!! Never saw Taj and Rodd perform before. Never hear of this show.
LOVE IT! Excellent performance !
I never get tired of this.😊
Dude with the phonographs!!!!
Yeah, crazy, huh!?! Check out Christian Marclay's solo "song" from this episode where he goes nuts on the turntables for 4 whole minutes! (czcams.com/video/IIFH4XHU228/video.html)
I love this!
@jadrob276 - She's Michelle Gray, now Mrs. Michelle Rundgren. She was a background singer/dancer on a few of Todd's earlier tours. She works as a stand-up comedienne sometimes, and had (has?) a radio show broadcast from their home in Hawaii. She recently did some of the costumes for Todd's AWATS stage shows. And she's a nice lady, to boot!
rednoise0 I believe she is Rebop's mother as well.
don't we all miss this!!!!
Bravo!!!
Hooray! I havr not seen this since 1989. Thanks!
Better that than forget them entirely. Hey, this is live performance, not everything needs to be perfect, edited, tweezed and autotuned. This is human.
michele is the only one for todd-anyone else i would be extremely jealous of haha
@foxfireman188 It's Gilbert & Sullivan. You can know the words and still have trouble keeping up.
I remember watching this way back when.
ya gotta love it!!!!!!!
This is great!!! I don't know how I missed this vid. And I don't remember that show. What network was it on? I wish I had known. I am thrilled to see this.....what fun!!!!
Thanks so much for posting this!!! I love it.
Going to see Todd on Dec.22nd in Sellersville, PA and New Years Eve in Philly!!! His new album ARENA rocks!!!!!
oxox
It was a syndicated show, produced by Lorne Michaels' Broadway Video (he is still at the helm of SNL). The first season, it was called "Sunday Night", and was usually on after local NBC affiliates late news, if they had one. The second season, they changed the name to "Night Music", so that it could be run on any day of the week that a station wanted to.
This was absolute brilliance. I wish they had done the entire musical. If there is any more of this HMS pinafore done by them please post it it. 💕
Todd Rundgren, Taj Mahal, Michelle Rundgren, Phillippe Saisse, Pat Metheny, David Sanborn….. Help me out y'all…. Who's the DJ ? who else in on this awesome track ??
Christian Marclay, turntableist
He's also a serious art filmmaker.
you are correct!
Singing lyrics in one's ear would not afford time to repeat them during the normal flow of the song's tempo. He knew the lyrics. Todd was just goofing around.
Actually, I think Todd was helping Taj, just in case. Notice at the end of the verse, Taj and Todd sing a different word, Taj looks at Todd, and Todd gives him a reassuring pat on the back.
clever guy Mr R
Is this the Todd Rundgren/ Pat Metheny collaboration we’ve been waiting for?? 😆
I keep playing the Waiting Game! I mean, Pat collaborated with Bowie and a few other pop & rock musicians with good results. Seeing Pat in a funny hat accompanying Todd is good and fun, but I'd love to hear something with more substance. They are both chock full of ideas that I think would be complimentary.
@@rednoise0
I agree
Todd also has his extremely creative and experimental side as well (not only “Hello it’s me”)
Might be an interactive collab with Pat
Pat Metheny in a funny hat!
That should be the late Hal Willner on triangle.
Aha! Thank you, that solves a long-standing mystery. Not only was Hal a great producer, he could also tingle a mean triangle!
I wonder if Pat Metheny will have that on his greatest hits album?
Jeff Isles Wouldnt a Todd/Metheny collaboration be interesting? Both musical visionaries.
Nope
If you mean the guy making funny noises with the table full of turntables, that's Christian Marclay. He had his own feature on the show - check my list of videos and you'll find it there. Pretty wild stuff!
One of the most innovative DJ's ever. He sliced up vinyl records and glued pieces of them into other discs, to get strange sounds and effects. Brilliant!
really funy
this makes me miss spinal tape; that was more real. geeze todd...
The triangle player is Kramer from Bongwater.
I agree!
+Jj Sands - It seems real enough to me - they're all singing for real and playing real instruments. And spinal tape is available at any corner drug or medical supply store, so there's no need for you to miss it.
I love the way they take the piss out of Gilbert & Sullivan. It's wonderful music though. The other takes on it I've seen on youtube seem so stiff in comparison. Not the easiest material to sing as singers today don't tend to challenge themselves as much.
who's the woman?
Not Michelle, is it??
Yeah, Michele it is!
Never mind Todd, that's TAJ MAHAL singing with them! I have loved his music since I was a microdot. Oh yes, and I love Todd too. This is beyond hilarious.
Her name is Michele not with 2 L's.
SO .. who the hell is on triangle?
😂
They are having fun with it for sure, but not a total piss-take as Todd has been a big fan of Gilbert and Sullivan since he was kid...
WTF, OMG ! ! ! ! LoL
Oh my God! Great! Who's the girl by the way???
1:00 why is this guy even performing when he needs his lyrics sung loudly in his ear??
My guess is that it was a last minute song they put together. Nanci Griffith was supposed to be the female but backed out at the last minute and Todd's wife had to sing the part for her. The lyrics were probably too fast for the cue card person to keep up!
Always fun to watch and attempt to sing along! Thanks for posting.
