- Todd appeared on the October 29, 1989 episode of the short-lived music television show Night Music. He performed three songs: "Can't Stop Running" and "Parallel Lines" from his new album, Nearly Human, and a surprise rendition of a number from the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta, H.M.S. Pinafore (assisted by Taj Mahal and Michele Gray)!
The house band included such great players as Omar Hakim (drums), Tom Barney (bass), Hiram Bullock (guitar), Don Alias (percussion), Philippe Saisse (keyboards), Doug Katsaros (piano) and host David Sanborn (saxophone.) - Hudba
These songs from Todd will stand the test of time. They will still be beautiful and relevant 50 years from now.
I don't understand where he gets these brilliant ideas for songs, lyrics and song structure second to none.
This song is beyond breathtaking. The lyrics, all at once intellectual, soulful and Heart rending. It's such an interpretive piece as well, from the standpoint it could be someone you've not ever seen you feel a connection with but never will come into physical contact, or a relationship fading after so many years. Todd is a Wizard a True Star, and this is one of his best.
Todd Rundgren, the interpreter of the human spirit!!
This is the saddest song, and one of the greatest performances I've ever heard.
I remember buying Nearly Human on Cassette for $1 at an Army base bargain bin oversees, may 1991. I bought the CD next time I was in Japan. If you could wear out a CD I tried. Every damn song. Not bad for a Upper Darby boy.
Beautiful song. Beautiful performance. Beautiful Todd.
A bit of Heaven brought to us by one of my favorite humans. Thanks, Todd!
This song has been so important for me in my life. What a grounding. What love.
His voice is so powerful
Everytime I would miss out on some beautiful out of my league girl, I'd play Rundgren albums for three days. Right here is the king of all unrequited love songs. Cool version. Both of these tours were great but, he never did this song this way to my memory so, great to have this.
This is my Fav song>Hands down.
Now, how crazy is this: I was an usher for this show when it opened at The Public Theatre! I got to see Tod Rundgren and his girlfriend at the theatre at every performance they attended. I even confiscated a bootleg copy of the original music he wrote for this show from an audience member and kept it for years. I don't know where it is now; lost during a move to one of several places I've lived since then. Lorrr, that was 'way back in the 80's, ya'll.
One of his best works done in the best possible way. Perfect. I cannot believe the CRAP that passes for love songs when there is Todd and he is virtually unknown in the UK.
At that place in time no artist could compare with Todd Rundgren! Rundgren's lyrics and voice draw you in. If you know of an artist that compares to Todd Rundgren let us know! No one does it better!
This is an awesome Todd. Todd's music goes straight to the soul. He is an old soul.....knowing the power of universal love. I know I sound sappy. I am a woman who bought the 45 of Leroy Boy excetera. Thank you Todd, your understanding of the spirit has enriched my life,
Todd Rundgren is amazingly talented.
This is such a wonderful version - stripped down, revealing the brilliant songsmith
❤👍🎵🎵🎵🎵
Genius. Can't believe I've never seen this rendition. Thanks for posting it. Parallel Lines is probably my all time fave TR song. Just amazing, wistfully melancholy lyrics that are so heartbreakingly crafted around a haunting melody. This slower version really brings that component out.
As much as I love the album, Nearly Human, this live studio version, as rough as it is, is the best-ever version of this song. I agree. Pure heartbreak, pure genius.
Agree, brilliant.
33 years later and it still hits. Hard!
I like both versions a lot, but this one is pared down to highlight the very emotional, dramatic vocal delivery. The album version is presented as more of a pop music single. I love them both, but this one is enough to make your heart stop.
Love this song so much. "...some things never come together...parallel lines never do cross over." Powerful words and a wonderful voice make for one fantastic song. Thank you for this post.
Powerful and right to the heart,
Todd is a GENUS!! I LOVE HIM! AND HIS MUSIC! 💖 I Luv This Song!
Love the song and Todds voice so good!!!
I am still listing to this
I remember this appearance clearly. I ran out and bought the album. Unfortunately the album version lacked the stripped down passion of this version - I'm very very glad to find it on youtube. Thank you for posting it!
Mick Child: Yeah, the album version is more of a conventional pop song arrangement. This version is much like Todd's demo recording he made for the stage musical "Up Against It". It's much more dramatic and gives Todd a great opportunity to really emote. This is one my favorite vocal performances of his.
Absolutely.
i only saw/heard this for the first time last night, Im ashamed to say. I simply cannot stop watching. The beauty and the depth and the songcraft. Never mind his utterly staggering performance and voice and spirit. I feel like i did the first time i heard Judee Sills' The Kiss. im at a loss for words really
You're right - it's a gem, isn't it?! The poppier album arrangement is great, but this one opens up to give Todd plenty of space to really dig deep.
Oh how I love his hair, was a great time in musical history.
AWESOME
Also one of my favorite tunes from the 1990 album "Nearly Human." "Parallel Lines" usually starts with an "A" in the left hand and on bass but Todd's decided here to make a slight and very musical change by going down a minor 3rd to an F# in the bass and left hand. You won't hear that on the album. This is a terrific version.
Going through the hardest time in my life at the moment. Being erroneously judged and getting not an ounce of compassion. The lines here "You'll get no judgement from me, I can only feel compassion and if that's what you need I will give you my compassion" are ripping me apart. Coming from Todd's beautiful, soul touching voice, I imagine he's singing to me. God, I need it. Thank you Todd. ❤
I hear ya. I am, too. Music can articulate the thoughts swirling in my head better than mere words. This one is good medicine.
@@rednoise0 Good luck in everything man. ❤️
TODD is SO Darn CUTE! Here💖 There is No One! In the Music Industry that can even touch his GENUS! He was my Highschool Crush! And this song is Everything! Just listen to these words! WOW! 💖🙏
Outstanding! I wish I had followed Todd more closely when I was serving my apprenticeship years in music! I always loved everything I heard he do, but that was mostly radio and didn't really rediscover and research him until recently and thus, didn't comprehend his vast diversity! It's funny that a while ago I said to myself that he is the Gilbert and Sullivan of contemporary music. Todd is absolutely one of my A-list composer/performers of all time! Thanks for posting this treasure! Blessings!
+beth leinicke Absolutely!
Better late than never
A musical genius!
This vocal is right out of the Heavens!
No matter how many times I hear Todd sing it always blows me away! I will forever be transfixed by his beautiful voice and singing skill.
I love you todd
Amazing talent. . .what a passionate performance. . .goose bumps!
Thanks for posting! : )
I have a feeling everyone involved knew they were doing something unique (which hasn't been duplicated since) and were very appreciative for the chance.
Incredible version of one of Todd's Classic's !
I've always loved that song and that was an amazing version.
Beautiful performance with Doug Katsaros on grand piano.
Tommy Zvoncheck: Thanks for identifying Doug Katsaros - I've been wondering who that was! I didn't recognize the name, but apparently he's worked with Todd on some other things, like "Up Against It" and "Second Wind". Very nice playing!
Phillipe Saisse on synthesizer.
Amazing quality version of this! Thanks so much for making it available. This is the definitive version of this song, shortly after he wrote it and was impassioned about it. Rare to see these jaded studio musicians applaud.
Wow- I love youtube for this type of thing-showing the world the brilliance of artists like Rundgren.....deserves bigger accolades for his achievements...
This is why i love todd🎉
Oh how I love the lyrics of this song!!! Touches a part of my soul i can relate the lyrics to.
Thank you Mr. Rundgren.
Todd Rundgren: Composed, produces, and sings this song. Please, read the lyrics and watch him sing the song... Watch how he thinks about the music he wrote, and lyrics... You can see he is thinking about every word, he is saying, and singing... To me this song is so precious.. It shows me why, I like him so much.. He is so intelligent.... Genius !!
This is one of my most favorite tunes by Todd......
Thanks so much for posting!!!
ox
absolutely stunning! thank you! ;)
my loving X turned me own to Todd Rundgren some number of years ago,I still thank him to this day for it!!! Todd is King
Beautiful version of one of my favorite songs of his. He is just amazing.
Thanks so much for making this available. This is one of Todd's most beautiful and heartfelt performances. I saw Omar playing with Kate Bush in 2014, and he's one of the greatest drummers alive.
"As lines, so loves oblique may well
Themselves in every angle greet;
But ours so truly parallel,
Though infinite, can never meet."

The Definition of Love
Here I am again...to hear Todd sing this beautiful wonder before I go to sleep. :D
..and do it with such a cute cool way of delivering his wisdom to the public! He's amazing.
Just heard the conversation and, yes indeed, this does "have legs." This version is good as well as the studio version which is fabulous, give it a listen if you can. Todd Rundgren is quite talented and I like all the songs he has put out. This particular song I play every day and I play it repeatedly. Just love this. Thank you for this post.

Fabulous!!!
Beautiful! One of my favorite. I particularly like that it's bare-boned and from the heart without any back up. This one has particular meaning for a time in my life. Bravo Todd as usual!
Very much like the lyrics & Todd's singing on this song!😲💜
such a great show....nothing like it now...its all 'pawn stars'...
Beyond Brilliant...
The term "Genius" gets tossed around an awful lot these days. But in the case of Todd Rundgren, it certainly applies.
Music in time Give Thanks we all know liveing it Parallel lines
Wow! What a Man! What a Voice! I Love You Todd!
WOW
I love this cd. I play it over and over.🕊❤️
The one and only. Perfection personified. Period.
who thought a better version of this tune existed?
Brilliant.
BEAUTIFULL!!!!!
one of the most powerful versions of one of the most beautiful songs
This was my favorite song on this great album. Yes album I bought it on vinyl. Todd, Nearly Human was a special musical journey.
I love the surprise... that is exaggerated.... we all want to make life more...... than it is..... more..... is what we all look for... to be the one that will be more...... than we... see the special we are.......
THANK YOU so much for posting this! Perhaps the most beautiful Todd performance I've seen and I've loved this guy for a long long time.
Mr. Rundgren may have missed his calling. In another age he would have been a musical theatre actor/performer, and a very talented one. The world of rock n roll wasn't the best outlet for his skill set.
I saw this program late at night many years ago. This song made me an instant Todd Rundgren fan. I had taped the show - and I've worn out the tape over the years. Thank God for You Tube.
Fabulous job Todd!
Hey Dave, can you get Lorne Michaels to release the whole series on DVD? We'd love it!
Todd STILL gives me Butterflies.. Just like way back then. Great version of Parallel Lines....
Just f'n wow. What a creative soul, 'SO refreshing to hear original creativity - which he has ALWAYS been about ('been a fan since "Runt" :-) )
One of my favorites. Loved this show.
What a wonderful piece of live music, i often think that the real heart of a piece of music comes to life in a live performance and this is just to achingly beautiful.Thank you so much for posting it.
~swoon~ what an incredibly talented beautiful man.
Sublime.
That one's a winner.
Outstanding. Never seen this before.
This is AWESOME!! I've been looking for "Night Music" clips - with this one in particular! Thanks soooo much for posting!
The lines that move side by side..... moving forward..... faster.....lines that never cross...have no contact....what a shame... never to have my line run onto you....... see you or feel you.... the line that takes me onward......
