Also ironic that KSU's first round victory in 1988 was against La Salle in a 4/13 matchup. 25 years later, they would be upset by La Salle in a 4/13 matchup!
Yes that is a crazy twist! And LaSalle followed that up by knocking off Marshall Henderson and Ole Miss to advance to the Sweet 16! Was LaSalle's first trip to the second weekend of the tournament since 1955 (58 years)! Then losing to equal Cinderella Wichita St (Shockers would advance to the FF and then destroyed the in-state rival Jayhawks (statement game) during the second round of the '15 tourney)! Too many tying coincidences!
In the regional Kansas saw something I have never seen before. Each higher seeded team Kansas would have played from the 2nd round til the Region Finals was beaten.(NC State. was a 3 seed Pitt a 2 seed and Purdue was the 1 seed) But things like that can happen in a single elimination tourney. and when Kansas got to the Final 4 they beat a 2 seed(Duke) and a 1 seed Oklahoma. In tournament play who play who is in front of you and have to win six straight. Kansas did that
I was at this game. Just a kid, it was the first big sporting event I attended. My grandpa, RIP 😞, took me... his being a University of Detroit (notice the logo on the court) graduate and donor he got a couple of free tickets.
And comprised the national championship game! The league has rarely had that kind of success since! I believe that was the last time ('88) two clubs from the same league played each other for the title! I can still remember exactly where I was watching Manning and the Miracles take down then vaunted Oklahoma! That was my sophomore year in high school
Greatest moment in the history of the Sunflower Showdown. Every time KSU fans pound their chest about owning us in football, we need to remind them that we have the ultimate bragging rights over them by virtue of beating them in the 1988 Elite Eight.
This match up never should have happened in one region! Clearly the NCAA was worried the both teams along with Oklahoma would be in the final four. The conference simply dominated the nation that year and they tried to get them to eliminate each other to keep the tourney ratings up and more nationwide. I mean Verne Lundquist exposed them first thing and ratings suffered in the championship game because of the close proximity of the schools.

KU still leads the all time series in football.
@@kevbomevbo3492 if I had a dollar for every time I heard that😂
Because it's true and KSU won't be beating KU in football much longer. Program has really turned around.@@wildcat_ian3258
