I spent last year selling all my gear, it was the best move ever. Entire modular + cases, hydrasynth, tracker, polyend play, mpc live 2, the list goes on and it was much more than that. I now only have my op-1 field, sp 404 mk2, polybrute and a minifreak im going to sell. And my laptop. AND! I have only been using my laptop, even using the typing keyboard to keep the setup even smaller. Gear is fun but it took me a long time and a ton of money to realize I hardly made any music and was so lost in the cables trying to run evertything into everything and midi everything. It was dumb. Good luck on your quest to make music.

    • @nodz007
      @nodz007 Před 11 měsíci +4

I had this issue as well but I realised that it's because I was trying to run the hardware set ups like what we have in a DAW with everything on tap. Now I just connect 1 or 2 pieces together and then use that and record into the DAW. Also I found the ERM multi clock was the best buy as it allowed me to record the audio in ableton with next to no latency so my hardware always plays in perfect sync with other recorded stuff in Ableton.
I don't like vst's, I think they sound too bright when you open up the filters and a bit plasticky, so I stuck with my hardware synths and groove boxes.

Tmk a LOT of pro’s use inky the laptop with a mouse, master the keyboard shortcuts and use a cheap/ shitty midi keyboard for drums/searching chords but that’s it, more money for room treatment and speakers/monitors.

The thing on the bottom is the heatsink. Heat is transfered from the standalone cpu, through the case, and into that heatsink. If you unscrew it from the base you will just see the standard flat base of the case, and have to take it all apart more to see the battery, cpu and ssd.

here's my take on Push 3, and also gear and finishing tracks as I'm currently in exactly same scenario as you. I got Push 3 standalone last week, honestly I sold my Push 2 6 months ago as I wasn't really using it and had a full size synth/midi controller I started using instead with Ableton. And I just jammed and overdubbed ideas quickly with that thing. I bought a new faster laptop a week before the Push came out and just installed my projects on that to finish my EP, and that's all I'm doing, using a laptop with a pair of headphones and finishing stuff. I don't need new ideas or distractions right now. But The Push I think has its place. I can't pick it up to help me arrange and finish a track, which is good in a way as it would prob distract me. I know that when I switch it on, I'm jamming and exploring and capturing new ideas and jams, and that's cool, it separates workflows for me a bit. I have it in another room/desk than my main computer/monitors spot, and actually using it to sample other bit of gear like op-1's modular stuff etc and instantly get it into the starter of a new Ableton project is actually subtle but much more efficient than when I just normally capture it into one of my sound recorders and end up with a random file name WAV I need to fish through later and turn into something. I can see me using it live once I can trust it for any bugs maybe in a few months time. Pads to me are worth it alone if you're looking for highly expressive MPE pads, if you're just bashing basic stuff out, then might not be the same consideration. And lastly, if you forget it's Ableton inside there and think it's a black box with a version of max msp inside, the potential of an amazing M4L personal live instrument is super exciting to me for live stuff with the MPE support. 🙃

Have you upgraded the software? 🤔 I've got it for a week and had one crash so far. (While doing some extensive sample editting.) ...anyway, I do love this thing. I plan to use it as an MPE controler at home and later play some small-ish gigs in the SA mode. But even at home. Like the other day I was doing renders for a mastering sesh I did for a friend. That ment my main Ableton was busy. I just switched Push to SA mode and made one or two new ideas to work on later. Also I love this idea of people having it as a quick sampling groovebox next to a vinyl player. ...with straight wi-fi line to Ableton. There's so many new usecases that can be made with this paradigm. I Love it. ...and when they iron bugs, add User Mode in SA and possibly bring Arrange view in the future, it's gonna be epic.

I am having the same revelation right now. I have all of this gear that I have collected basically since the pandemic. While I love using MPC, Maschine, Push 2 etc the dirty little secret is that I have not been particularly productive or effective at using any of them to actually COMPLETE a track. Most of my finished tracks are coming from just using Ableton directly. I like doing everything at the same time so usually I will create an idea, mix it and edit it all at the same time when I use Ableton which is forcing me to just have to admit that is my most efficient workflow. So thinking of selling all of my gear and just continuing to use a Keystation 49 and a MPD 218 to actually get tracks finished haha! Might keep the SP 404 Mk II as well. The simplified workflow and the effects have kept me interested. Love your content and the fact that you keep it honest and helpful!

I also have recently acquired a Push 3 Standalone for some T&E… so far, so good. I haven’t had any crashes, but the one thing that is posing a challenge for my setup is that Wi-Fi connectivity to your computer… my desktop does not have Wi-Fi. Ableton’s online manual states that an Ethernet cable can be connected to Push 3 via the USB A port and connected to same router in your network, but it is not working. In the meantime until I can figure it out I’ll connect it to my laptop.
In comparison to my MPC SE, I would say that it’s going to take me some time to stop trying to touch the Push 3 screen! Lol! Boot up time takes a bit on the Push 3. The MPE pads are a joy to utilize!
I’ll continue to mess with it… get accustomed to the workflow. It looks like it’s going to stay in the workspace.

Appreciate the honesty. I have mine on pre-order and I’m honestly fine with the 2 month wait because it means that some of these bugs might be addressed before I get it. For me it makes sense because it simplifies my entire setup (Minifreak, Push3… that’s it!) and let’s me focus on producing. Had the same problem with GAS in the past and it did not serve me one bit. It actually stifled my creativity.

Agree completely! The gear can definitely be a distraction. Everything that comes out for better or worse can distract from working on your craft. I’ve been picking things up lately myself (nothing new, things that have been out for awhile and the hype has died down) and even that has slowed me down.

That metal grid on the underside is in fact the heatsink for cooling the CPU.
I wonder how warm that grid is going to be when you put Push 3 on your lap.
I have the Push 3 controller version.
I like it a lot except for the fact that I miss buttons or knobs to move the play head or jump between transport markers.

So angry. But I loved your video. You are so right about hardware. I’m just constantly buying things to try to do everything in one device and it never works out. Got the nautilus and planned to use that to do all mixing and everything in the nautilus itself. Well the sequencer is terrible, so I had to attach another sequencer to it, you have to resample instead of having an export song option….anyway, my plans always go to poop!

Good points. To answer your question about the crashing, my guess is that most DAW-less devices are running less complex code, with more limitations. Running Live Suite w/ Max...that's bound to be full of infinite possibilities, it's not possible to beta test it all. If they made a kind of Push version of Live, with some creative limitations, there would probably be fewer crashes. I'm guessing Live Intro is gonna crash less than Suite w/ Max.

Still a good controller competitive price compared to the Push 2 released many years ago for $800. This with MPE and interface built in for $1,000 seems right. I do wish they would have dropped the standalone version and spent more time with a touch screen display type.

Not sure where you live Jade, but orders are backed up way further than that. I ordered stand-alone the day after release, and it’s still not coming until the end of July. I’m on the West Coast. I think Ableton but off more they could chew with the direct to consumer route, their customer support is drowning.

If you keep your controller close to your computer I see little use for something this heavy.
You go into Starbucks in say Berkeley, CA. You come back from the bathroom, it's gone. Or, it's not but people ask you why are you in a coffee shop hitting pads furiously with a headset on? While you shouldn't be self-conscious, it isn't something you see every day.
. The battery lasts 45 minutes.
    . It's pretty heavy.
I agree with Jade Wii, finishing your work and getting into a workflow that you enjoy is probably a top priority. There are people who enjoy auditioning 100 kick drum sounds. But hobbyists?

  • @crazyhoarse

I had buyers remorse pretty quickly. The MPE was what interested me but the pads feel really stiff and I wasnt that impressed with the results i was getting for MPE stuff. I was making music much faster with just a launchpad pro (the pads feel way nicer) and mouse or a midi keyboard. I kept it though. Honestly it doesnt do anything particularly well for its expense in terms of my workflow. Youre paying for a so so audio interface on the computer controller model and standalone has some pretty serious limitations. (Battery life, not particularly great cpu, ram or storage/still pretty reliant on connecting with a computer to get your sounds in) It just gets in my way ya. That said it's kind of interesting when hooked up to hardware synths and modular stuff, maybe? I dont know.

It is worth it, if you already have a laptop and want a very good MPE controller (not standalone). It is only $200 dollars more than the Push 2 and this is many years later with a interface, ADAT support, and MPE. So if I didn't already have a push 2 I would get the Push 3 (non standalone) in a heartbeat.

The size and weight are definitely off-putting coming from a Syntakt as the main hardware inspiration. I wish the Push 3 was smaller (and less expensive). Still though, it looks like a really inspiring groovebox compared to the MPC Live 2 which I sold because the synths and effects didn't sound great and the workflow was a little clunky.

Yo JAde. Hear ya on finishing songs. Try working in Arrangement view instead of session. You'd be surprised how if forces you to push the song forward, and keeps you out of clip-launching hell. The problem with Session is that it boxes you into X bar loops, and you keep trying new stuff but you don't really get anywhere because why should have to make a decision or make a transition, you just make another loop. In arrangement view, you have to say "I'm going to transition into a B section with a hard stop (or a filter sweep, or whatever)".... Now I'm half talking out of my *ss, bec. I love session view and clip launching, but we have to get real and say that what people want to listen to is a good song........ cheers, and hope to see you again at Knobcon (been a couple yrs).

I record in Session view, then into arrangement view, then consolidate time to new scene back into sessions - have been for years, works for me.
All your remarks about arrangement view have validity.
For me, besides have a good musical idea (without which, why bother) the loop braces in Arrangement View are the most powerful thing in Live. By FAR. If you have a good ear, you can find entire wonderful sections, large and small, and create entire backing tracks, new rhythm parts, and with some work, entire new melodic parts incredibly quickly. I don't think this will ever stop being the most powerful thing in Live - by a mile.

Like others have said, most channels are pushing gear down our throats, and for the weak,it works. For me, it's got to work ALL the time or it gets canned, sent back, and the company will know how I feel in writing. I believe many companies rush out things, do not send out enough products to be tested by musicians actually making music, and instead, they go by opinions of folks with no credible works. Anyone can take a million dollars and buy a studio full of gear, yet less than 10 % of them will make a living with music. It's easy to sit at home and say how much gear is great, yet is that the real truth?I have a room full of gear and disconnected it to use a laptop, PolyEnd Tracker, Zoom recorder, and maybe the MV8800/bass/guitar.

@@JAdeWii_ Yeah, I feel ya. For $2000 you get a more than decent laptop, with a sound interface and a light controller.
Thanks for putting this video out, I am pondering for almost 2 weeks now if I should return it or not, and after watching this video, I sent a message to Ableton support.
My studio is convoluted with so much stuff, that I never used in my entire career.
In the end, it always boils down to a computer, 2 speakers, and a small controller.

So seamless and you can arm tracks with thumb and launch a clip with finger seamless if your going back and forth from track to track.
