- An excellent evenings session spent at Wimbledon station on the South Western Mainline where we see plenty of services from South Western Railway, Thameslink, London Underground and the Croydon Tramlink.
Wimbledon recieved its first station in 1838 when the London and South Western Railway opened it up, this was built on the opposite side of the Wimbledon bridge.
In 1855 the Wimbledon and Croydon Railway opened the West Croydon to Wimbledon Line to West Croydon via Mitcham. And in the same month of the very next year the Tooting, Merton and Wimbledon line was opened.
In 1889 the District Railway opened the extension of its line running from Putney Bridge which gave Wimbledon a direct link to the ever growing London Underground Network, this also meant that Wimbledon was now the terminus of the line.
Wimbledon station was rebuilt on its current site in 1910 but wasn't completed until 1920 because the war taking place, fundamentally not a great deal has actually changed, the station layout remains the same. The main station entrance hasn't changed all that much. Aside from the modernisation that he taken place such as the introduction of the third rail, various station displays and lifts being installed.
In 1997 the West Croydon to Wimbledon Line was closed by Railtrack for it to be converted for part of the Tramlink operations which are running to this day, the new service was officially opened in May 2000, in 2015 platform 10 was split into two parts which would allow for greater frequency of trams to use the station.
Last year the station took on average 18.5 million passengers.
My next station is Earslfield.

Underground, overground, Wombling free,The Wombles of Wimbledon Common are we,Making our use of the things that we find,Things that the everyday folk leave behind.Remember it from my youth. I'm now 53!
You can't not think of Wimbledon and not have the Wombles in your head haha
The District line was one of the rare pleasures of the Tube when I was in London; the trains are bigger than on the Jubilee, Piccadilly lines etc, and they're new, so had air conditioning. And on the Tube... boy oh boy, that means a lot.
AC on the tube! This is simply unheard of!
In my Opinion, this was one of the most enjoyable and amazing in general videos from you
Well thank you kindly for saying so
Wow busy busy station. As normal a great video. Weather didn't look very nice so thanks for spending time in it. Looking forward to the next one. Regards
This was a great station to come tom the weather wasn't completely wonderful but it held off for me
Great video
I like it when it rains at stations. It gives it a nice atmosphere
I do have to agree with you there
I sometimes think about whether perhaps Wimbledon station should be renamed "Wimbledon Central".
You know, to distinguish it from Wimbledon Chase train station, as well as Wimbledon Park and South Wimbledon tube stations.
It's a very good point that you raise!
Can you go to Upminster, on the LTSR (London, Tilbury, and Southend Railway) please
Awesome vid bud keep up the excellent content
Thanks very much!
The Croydon trams connect Wimbledon with Croydon (unsurprisingly), New Abbingdon, Elmers End, and Beckenham Junction
Do you have to tap in and tap out to change from south western railway to thameslink. Btw great watch 👏🏽
No. Transfer is available to all services without taping in

@@nighatzia4353 25 ?! 😳 … 🤔 … can you tell me what it is ?
no thameslinks :(
Where are the 456s, I went to Waterloo last Tuesday and there was none!
you will find them, but they aren't always running
Are they rare?
What makes that siren type sound when the trains begin to depart ?
Thameslink Siemens Desiro City class 700 working the Sutton loop service. Or as Tornado922 describes it, Stormtroopers.
Don't forget the 360, 350, 444 and 450. They are all desiros with the same sounds
@@alisonrawlings6679 that's true aswell
Basically, it's the regenerative braking system the Desiro trains use.
And they sound epicc
Hey Tornado, how has COPPA affected you? Do you just mark your video not for kids or have to add something? I’m clueless on this law and don’t really want a £42,000 fine on my doorstep
