- In 2008, I walked through China - 1 year, 4500km. I let my hair and my beard grow. This is the resulting video. UPDATE: ▶ I have decided to continue my walk home from China to Germany. I'm currently in Turkey, or about halfway through.I post daily videos on this channel, and I blog about it here: thelongestway.com
ABOUT THIS VIDEO:
▶ I didn't finish my original goal of walking to Germany in 2008. Instead, I walked for a year and roughly 4500km, passed the Gobi desert, and then decided to stop walking.
▶ All of the distance from Beijing to Ürümqi was completed solely on foot, straight good old walking. There are instances where you can see me in the video sitting on a plane or riding a boat, but those are during breaks I had to take from walking, either to sort out bureaucracy issues or to take care of some personal things.
▶ I had been planning this trip for over a year before I even started, and getting as far as I got was an experience for which I am very grateful.
▶ Obtaining the necessary visa for a trip like this was not very easy, hence I had to go back to Beijing a few times to resolve some issues.
▶ This is not a strict "1 pic a day" video, because I wanted to make it a bit more alive by adding some additional movement. Sometimes during the film you would follow me turn around, or something would happen in the background. I tried to capture these moments to make the video more interesting.

Did I read your book when I was a child??? I grew up in a small town in China and one day read a book about a guy walking across China. I was so obsessed with the book that I finished reading it in one stand. Of course due to CZcams being blocked in China, I did not see this video at that time. Now I can only vaguely remember there was an old Chinese guy who taught you about the 'cultural revolution', a girl whose name I could not recall you had to part with, and how you had to suspend the journey because of some border crossing issues, etc (It's been so long I cannot remember exactly). Now I studying outside China, and I accidentally got recommended this video by CZcams. The feeling is quite magical, it's almost like time traveling

Rewatch this after 10+ year, the nostalgia, the emotions... When he was walking through my homeland, I was living in his homeland :) He passed through my home town, at mark 857km, he stood literally on the spot where my friends and I were playing after school almost everyday.
In the years I occasionally came back to this video, every time full of emotions, but every time they are different. Time flies by, I am no longer young, I can feel something is calling, maybe it's time for me to take my longest way home...

This video might just be the most life changing thing that has ever happened to me.
This one video has inspired me to walk throughout the world. I’m waiting to turn 18 so I can leave the house and step out onto the earth and begin my journey.
This one video put me down a path of adventurousness and the need to go out into the world. It has changed my life.
The night I watched this I was having a horrible night, I was thinking about my ex girlfriend and feeling heartbroken, I went on CZcams and saw this in my recommended. I watched the whole thing and I instantly felt something inside me. I went down a rabbit whole that night watching videos from sabbatical, and other people who have traveled the world, walking among the outer reaches of the earth just to find humanity in the people they where around. I was on love with the idea of being a wanderer.
the day I walk out of my small town in Massachusetts, might just be the happiest day in my life.
But for now, I wait. Slowly gaining knowledge about the world before I embark on my journey of humanity.

That's definitely the dream. Sadly life is hardly ever so ideal. I would love nothing more than to travel the world, but you need thousands saved up to live that kind of life. Technically there's nothing really stopping you, but being homeless on the road is a hard life, and very taxing. I still hope to do it someday while I'm still young but even at 23, having the kind of financial freedom to do something like that seems very far away

You just reminded me about my grandpa. He and his friends did similar things back in the days. I think they were inspired by the so-called ‘long March’ and wanted to do similar things when they attended some kind of patriotic event in a southern city in China. So they walked all the way to Beijing. He had a small notebook where he wrote and drew what he saw on the way. He have shown me before and I was really impressed. Their walking route is probably easier than yours because there should be more towns along the way and no desert or snow, but also it was back in maybe 60 to 70 years ago. But anyway, thanks for sharing your story on walking. Bless you
