I strongly recommend every language lover to learn Greek. I'm Russian and our language is somewhat grammatically closer to Greek and has more (even more!) Greek loanwords, than an average western-european language, so it's easier for us, but what is absolutely unique about Greek (including modern Greek of course) is that it gives you a deep insight into the meaning of countless scientific terms, cultural and even everyday vocabulary of your own language. Basically it's only after I began studying Greek I started to really understand my own native tongue and major European languages. I would say that you basically can't really understand any high browed text be it politics, science, arts etc. without at least basic knowledge of Greek. And yes - modern Greek is enough as they have preserved all their vocabulary from ancient times.

@@soundsoftheheart3164 they are very different grammatically and in terms of pronunciation, but vocabulary of ancient Greek largely persists in modern Greek as well. There are several "ancient" Greek languages, the so called koine, which arose in the times of Aristotle and Alexander the Great and was the official language of Byzantine empire is still being used as a liturgical language of Greek orthodox church and studied in Greek schools, but people don't speak it on daily basis of course. It's like Latin in Italy.

Greeks settled in Southern Italy in the 8th and 7th and 8th century BCE (in some parts of Italy some people still speak dialects of ancient Greek!). No wonder then that Italians and Greeks have so much in common

Μπράβο σου! Είναι πολύ εντυπωσιακό πώς μιλάς τα ελληνικά. Χρησιμοποιείς απαιτητικές φράσεις και με τόσο υψηλό βαθμό δυσκολίας τα μιλάς σχεδόν τέλεια - με ελάχιστα λάθη. Είναι αλήθεια ότι τα ελληνικά είναι δύσκολα, για αυτό σού αξίζει ένα μεγάλο μπράβο. Με συγκινεί να βλέπω έναν ξένο να μαθαίνει τόσο καλά την μητρική μου γλώσσα. Μού αρέσει πολύ η περιγραφή σου: η ελληνική γλώσσα ακούγεται σαν την ισπανική (ισχύει!) και έχει ιταλική καρδιά. Εμείς οι Έλληνες νιώθουμε πολύ κοντά με τους Ιταλούς και τους Ισπανούς - είναι το μεσογειακό ταμπεραμέντο! Μάλιστα για τους Έλληνες και τους Ιταλούς χρησιμοποιούμε την φράση "una faccia, una razza". Στο ελληνικό λεξιλόγιο βοηθάει πολύ η ετυμολογία. "Βιβλίο" (libro) - από την λέξη αυτή βγαίνουν οι λέξεις " bibliografia", "biblioteca". "Άνθρωπος" (essere umano) - από αυτήν την λέξη προέρχονται οι λέξεις "antropologia", " filantropia", "misantropo". "Πνεύμονας" (polmone) - από αυτήν την λέξη προέρχονται οι λέξεις "pneumologo", "pneumonia". "Γυναίκα" (donna) - από αυτήν την λέξη προέρχονται οι λέξεις "ginecologia", "misogino" ("μισώ" = odiare). "Ευχαριστώ" (grazie, letteralmente: "Io ringrazio") - από αυτήν την λέξη προέρχεται η λέξη Eucaristia (=ringraziamento, in greco - vuol dire: ringraziamento a Dio). Η λίστα με τις λέξεις συνεχίζεται! Ας σταματήσω εδώ. 🙂Δεν θα πω ότι όλες οι λέξεις προέρχονται από τα ελληνικά, αλλά θα πω ότι ΠΟΛΛΕΣ προέρχονται! Είμαι λίγο σαν τον πατέρα της πρωταγωνίστριας στην ταινία "Γάμος α λα ελληνικά" (My Big Fat Greek Wedding). 😀 Είμαι Ελληνίδα και λατρεύω τις ξένες γλώσσες. I rewatched this video after having started to learn Greek. I watched this video back then when I wasn't planing to learn Greek but I fell in love with the Greek mentality and their language.
I’m so happy that you’ve finally posted a video in Greek; it’s my favorite language, and it was really nice to hear you speak it! You’re doing really well with it on the whole, but there are a few sounds that you mispronounce fairly consistently. You often pronounce the letters and as [d] and [b] instead of as [ð] and [v], but you don’t do this all the time, so I’m guessing that you’re aware of how they’re supposed to be pronounced but that it’s just a little hard for you to remember while you’re speaking. Also, I suspect that whatever resource you used to learn Greek pronunciation taught you that the letter [γ] is pronounced like the English letter [y] in words like and , but this isn’t exactly right. The sound is actually a voiced palatal fricative, while the English letter represents a palatal glide. These are very similar sounds, but there is a noticeable difference between them. To put it simply, the tongue needs to be held a little closer to the hard palate to produce a voiced palatal fricative than it does to produce a palatal glide. If you do it right, you should feel the air between your tongue and the roof of your mouth buzz, which is something that shouldn’t happen when pronounce the letter in English. Despite these few pronunciation issues, you’re doing really well; you made very few grammatical errors! I hope to hear more Greek from you in the future - Καλή συνέχεια!

Excellent Luca! I have Greek heritage but don’t have an incredibly good active grasp of it. I speak English, Italian and am reasonably proficient in a German, and Greek is the next language I’d love to tackle.
Despite not having an excellent command of the language, I have had a large amount of exposure,
- particularly as a child - and one thing I would suggest is that Greeks have strong tendency to palatalise consonants. It was very obvious in your pronunciation of και that you weren’t doing this. Seriously though, this is obviously incredibly minor, so well done!

For those saying that the subtitles are not in English - at this stage, yes you're correct (I am guessing that Luca will add them later) but YT auto-subtitles seem to have taken a leap forward because I turned on the French ones and didn't see a single problem (although there were some slightly weird uses of French, of course). But it even picked up the names he was using and when he said "CZcams" it just said "YT". My French isn't perfect but because Luca spoke slowly here, the auto-French subtitles were totally fine.
Actually they are in English now, check it again.
@@maciejobjasniacz I've already watched it, so I don't need to. My point wasn't that there were no English subtitles (that was what everyone else was saying), my point was that the auto works fine, at least in French.

@@daysandwords Btw. Can I ask you something? I'm learning greek on memrise right now and "Δεν ήταν θυμωμένος" is translated there as You weren’t angry, but when I used google translation it's He was not angry - which translation is correct and why ?
@@maciejobjasniacz I am not sure, I don't speak Greek. But I can offer you two things:
1. "You" in English can be used totally generally, like "one is not angry", or "You don't just get angry because someone turns left in front of you."
2. Bab.la is a great online dictionary. For the English "you", it offers:
εσένα - εσύ - εσείς
For the English "he" it offers:
αυτός
So to me, it looks more like it was "he", but it's possible that the Greek "he" is general like the English "you" or the French "on". In my experience, every language has these general uses of pronouns, like Swedish has "man" which means literally "a man", but if you say "Man kan inte förvänta att alla prata svenska" - that means "You can't assume that everyone speaks Swedish". It DOESN'T mean "man doesn't assume..."
So that is my guess, but again, my knowledge of Greek extends about as far as knowing who Plato is.

it's a beautiful language. perhaps because it reminds me of my holidays in Greece during my childhood... but also because the writing looks old and it sounds old, reminds of the ancient Greece, antiquity

Your vocabulary is outstanding
This was very interesting. I was in Crete in 2018 and heard Greek for the first time there. But it's actually the Greek music that caught me the most, until a friend of mine (she's half Greek), taught me sentence and when I spoke it for the first time, it felt like home to me. Since that moment, I wish to learn Greek and try to find clues on how to achieve that goal. I'll check you the things you mentioned in your video. :) Thanks for uploading this!
Brutal!!!! Awesome!!!!! I realized that Greek is not difficult to pronounce. I hadn't listened someone speaking that language and it sounds easy to pronounce. Oh well, the only word I know is "ευχαριστώ" which is "thanks". Luca speaks excellent!!

Prima di tutto amo l'Italia, la cultura italiana, la gente e ovviamente la lingua. Quando parlo la lingua italiana sono tanto felice, contentissima! :) Per me, l'italiano è come la musica, come una canzone, è un emozione che batte nel cuore! :)

Σύμφωνα με το λεξικό,
Χειρίζομαι =
1. κάνω συγκεκριμένους χειρισμούς οργάνων και μηχανημάτων
2. διεξάγω, διεκπεραιώνω («χειρίζεται τα θέματα μεταθέσεων και αποσπάσεων»)
3. (κυριολ. και μτφ.) χρησιμοποιώ κάτι ως όργανο, ως μέσο (α. «χειρίζεται με ευκολία τον τόρνο» β. «χειρίζεται την ελληνική γλώσσα άριστα»)
Ελληνίδα είμαι, νομίζω τη χειρίζομαι καλά τη ρημάδα! Καλή συνέχεια! :)
@@evelinanikolarakou9313 Χειρίζομαι από το "χέρι" αναφέρεται σε αντικείμενα. Ακόμα και το "χρησιμοποιώ" που είπα μπορεί να είναι λάθος.
Ομιλώ, μιλώ ή μιλάω (το τελευταίο είναι λάθος που το κάνουμε στην καθομιλουμένη) την ελληνική γλώσσα.
@@antimimoniakos Το ότι χρησιμοποιούμε ΚΑΙ το ρήμα "μιλάω, μιλώ" στη καθομιλουμένη είναι προφανές.
Άνοιξε ένα λεξικό (ή δες το 3 από αυτό το λεξικό π σ έκανα επικόλληση), γκουγκλαρε το, ρώτα ένα φιλόλογο, πολλές οι εναλλακτικές..
Επίσης μπορείς και να συνεχίσεις μόνο να "μιλάς τη γλώσσα".
Ο καθένας όπως νιώθει.. 🙃 Ciao!

It took me a while to realize I don't understand Greek and put the English subtitles
I'm jealous. It seems so easy when I watch videos like these... It took me 40 years to be able to write a comment in bad english, and several years to read a book in spanish. But I've never been able to utter a single word in both languages. A few years ago, I decided to learn ancient greek, and one of the reasons was that nobody would never ask me to "speak" it. I fell in love with this beautiful grammar. My wife is greek and I spend my time between France and Greece, I hear greek words and sentences on a daily basis. I noticed that I was able to understand most of the simple comments written in greek, which I found quite disturbing since I'm still unable to say a simple sentence in greek and probably never will.

Luca non ho parole. Ti seguo da qualche anno e aspettavo con trepidazione questo video, perché parlo il greco fin da piccolo (mio padre è greco).
Non sai quanto mi ispiri, veramente questo video è la testimonianza di uno che prende e fa e arriva ad un livello altissimo. Lo parli quasi perfettamente, fa paura!
Ho notato solo una cosa. Attenzione alla pronuncia di χ! Come il tedesco ch, corrisponde a due fonemi diversi (cfr. machen/manche). Quando hai χε χι è dolce (tipo manche), quando hai χο χα (o χου, ma credo sia molto raro) è duro (tipo machen).
Non smettere mai di fare video!

Αγαπητέ φίλε Λούκα: Αρχικά θέλω να σε συγχαρώ που σε τόσο σύντομο χρονικό διάστημα κατάφερες να μπεις στο πνεύμα των ελληνικών και να τα μιλάς. Να σε ευχαριστήσω σαν Έλληνας που διαφημίζεις την κουλτούρα και τη γλώσσα μας, προτρέποντας και άλλους να μάθουν τα νέα ελληνικά. Επίτρεψε μου να κάνω κάποιες μικρές παρατηρήσεις για κάποια λίγα λαθάκια που έκανες στο βίντεο, για να τα εντοπίσεις και να τα διορθώσεις. Έτσι την επόμενη φορά θα είσαι πολύ πιο βελτιωμένος.
ΗΜΟΥΝ ΣΤΗΝ ΕΛΛΑΔΑ ΠΡΙΝ 20 ΧΡΟΝΙΑ (Σωστό αλλά το πιο δόκιμο είναι να πεις ΕΠΙΣΚΕΦΤΗΚΑ την Ελλάδα
ΕΙΝΑΙ ΚΑΙ ΗΤΑΝ- Είναι καλύτερο να πεις ΗΤΑΝ ΚΑΙ ΕΙΝΑΙ
ΜΙΛΟΥΝ ΜΕ ΤΑ ΧΕΡΙΑ- Εδώ χρησιμοποιούμε τη λέξη ΧΕΙΡΟΝΟΜΩ. Οι Έλληνες αρέσκονται να χειρονομούν και να φωνάζουν (ΑΝΤΙ ΓΙΑ ΤΟ ΜΙΛΟΥΝ ΔΥΝΑΤΑ).
ΘΑ ΜΑΘΑΙΝΩ- Ή θα πεις ΘΑ ΜΑΘΩ ή ΑΡΧΙΣΑ ΝΑ ΜΑΘΑΙΝΩ.
ΕΠΕΛΕΓΕ (Είναι πιο γενικό) αλλά στην προστακτική είναι ΕΠΙΛΕΞΕ.
Το γράμμα Δ προφέρεται με περισσότερη ελαφρότητα όπως και στα ισπανικά σε κάποιες λέξεις και όχι σαν ΝΤΕ. Βέβαια δεν πρέπει να σε ανησυχεί αυτό γιατί οι περισσότεροι ξένοι δεν μπορούν να το προφέρουν σαν ελαφρύ Δ. Τουλάχιστον στην αρχή.
Η ΓΛΩΣΣΑ είναι θηλυκό, οπότε δεν είναι ΟΠΟΙΟΥΔΗΠΟΤΕ αλλά ΟΠΟΙΑΣΔΗΠΟΤΕ γλώσσας.

Είσαι πολύ καλός Λουκά! Ένα πράγμα που πρόσεξα είναι ότι έχεις μια τάση να λες τη λέξη "ή" αντί για "και" όταν θες να πεις and. Μπορεί να το έχεις μπερδέψει υποσυνείδητα με το ισπανικό y. Επίσης ένα άλλο μικρό θέμα που ήδη αναφέρθηκε στα σχόλια κι έχει να κάνει με την ουράνωση στην ελληνική προφορά.

Well the same mistake (I’m Russian), we say “и” and it’s hard to use it as “or”:)
As Ksenia said, in Russian "and" is "и" like english e. I believe that is why Luca gets confused sometimes as he also speaks Russian very well.
i'm a half romanian half hungarian transylvanian so i am fluent in romanian and can understand and read some hungarian, i'm also fluent in english and italian since i've been living in northen italy for the past 7 years, i just finished my exams and got out of school and i'm planing on learning a couple other languages and i'd like to start with greek since my biggest passion is history and greece has plenty of it.
Luca! This new series of videos that you've just started, speaking about the languages you've learned (in those languages) is really good and it encourages me to keep on learning languages. It would be great if you do more of this videos, even though I don't speak as many languages as you do, I really enjoy them. Thanks for sharing your experiences with us!

Any other Greek podcast/video channel recommendations? I can't yet understand the astronomy podcast you recommended (although I am looking forward to when I can because those are the kind of videos I watch very often).
I'm subscribing to Easy Greek, but those podcasts are a bit long for me yet (based on your other video recommendation of watching a video of 5 minutes over and over). I do like them and enjoy learning about day-to-day culture, but I'd like to learn more about modern Greek history and about what Greeks have to say about other things I'm interested in (Scouts, music, fiction writing, swimming, astronomy and archaeology).
Thanks. BTW I found you very understandable. I think it may be because you speak clearly while the Greek in-laws I have (aunts, uncles, cousins etc.) all seem to speak much more quietly and less clearly.

Παρεμπιπτόντως, link in the description μεταφράζεται ως "σύνδεσμος στη περιγραφή" και η προστακτική του επιλέγω είναι επίλεξε (όχι επέλεξε ή επέλεγε) αλλά αυτό το κάνουν και πολλοί Έλληνες λάθος.

You’re very impressive. Greek is so hard. I noticed that many times you started a sentence with the sound E, as you were using the Spanish conjunction Y.

I am greek and I just wanna say that your accent is very good! If you talked a little faster and change the way of pronouce a couple letters/syllables you would sound like a born-raised greek. WELL DONE THIS IS SO HARD i don’t know who you do it with so many languages!

Wonderful! I notice however that you're not palatalizing the sounds κ γ χ when they're in front of the front vowels /i/ and /e/. For instance, και should be pronounced [ce] rather than [ke]. Listen to how Greeks say it and you'll hear what I mean ;-)
